Nice studies man you are definitely studying the right things. Only thing I would reccomend other then dilligence in the studies is authority with your lines. Try and make smooth dominant strokes, drawing from your elbow and your shoulder instead of the wrist. Smooth confident lines are much more dynamic then hesitant hatch oriented ones. Just keep at it and really try and draw from the shoulder and elbow rather then the wrist. Cheers!
I see anatomy very good!
All these anatomy studies will pay off - though if you can get some life drawing in there as well it will help you 'put it into practice' a bit. Also, some photo studies to get a handle on colour and edges would be very useful too imo. And imaginative stuff too! All studies and no "fun drawing" makes Jack a dull boy! Good work - keep it up.
i dig the posters. nice work.
Nice bridgeman studies. I also started out as a graphic designer before. Keep exploring new styles and push yourself.
Make a sketchbook happy, feed it a tip to improve!

hey thanks for the kind wordswith your studies if you want them to look good rendered you just need to give them more time, it seems like you just zoom through the whole rendering process and never figure out why it doesnt look good. Just give it more time and keep up the workload, build up a library!

Hey Jeremy
I'm liking your perserverance with the Bridgman, if you aren't already, try drawing them from imagination, do every other one from your head. I think you could work on your values more, the hair for example is rather darkened in your self portrait, try to translate this into your skin tones across the face as well. Keep working from life, okay.
Keep well bro.
Love the metal gear solid refs, awesome! I can't remember that dudes name but I do remember how kick ass he was! wasn't it like fox or something it's been 10 or more years since I played metal gear, so I am a tad rusty. Thanks for the crits I really appreciate it, and I will definitely do some bridgman and loomis studies today.

Thanks everybody! Sorry for the lack of update, I'm on spring break at the moment so I don't have a scanner, but on Monday I should be able to put up a lot of sketches. I'll also try to get a digital sketch up tonight or tomorrow.
Your confidence is growing. Good to see progress. Keep on drawing! You might want to try and loosen up a bit, draw more from your arm.
Hey Jeremy, nice updates man. Keep pushing yourself with those anatomical studies man. They'll pay dividends in the end for sure. Keep up the good work my friend.
a WIP of some weird woman from my head
still have a ton to do to it, but just wanted to get something up for now:

Thanks for dropping by my sketchbook, sweet new painting, from imagination. Keep on drawing, your imagination will only keep growing.

Hey Jeremy
Mmm, I think before you go too far with that render, the eyes seem a little high up on the face. I would suggest you bring them down slightly. Hope that helps.
Keep well bro.
added more to this girl.
thanks for catching that kungfoowiz, but I just decided to keep her eyes a tad high just because this portrait is just me practicing digital painting, and I think it kind of makes her look weird like I want her to lol

Hey bro
Is this your finished piece or still a work in progress?
I know it's not finished, but for me it is. I could have kept working on it, but I need to learn more techniques, (such as painting hair, fabric, texture, etc.) which is why I'm starting to do a lot of tutorials. So this is just a practice portrait to see where I'm at before I do a lot of tutorials and studies, but any advice is definitely appreciated!
Wow insane amount of studies - I like the watercolor(i think) picture at the top of this page. The girl from imagination is good, a critique on the eyes though, I think they seem a little long? Or the shape looks unnatural. I don't know it might just be me >_> Make sure you also don't just focus on characters/portraiture, try delving into environment studies as well.
Haha and I like the random hiragana written here and there.
sketchii-mop: thanks, that's good advice; and yea lol, i'm learning japanese!
here's an update from this past week (my spring break)

Hey Jeremy
Portrait painting - the nose is a bit on the long side. However, in saying that, people do have long noses, strange eyes, and not everyone is of ideal proportion, so it doesn't look terribly wrong in that sense.
In fact I think you've done a good job on the painting.
I like how you emphasised the warmer areas of the flesh, this shows some understanding of the body too.
I think the makeup should have more form to it. I think you could've done another pass and added some shadow and perhaps a thin bit of light to it.
They may be reflected light of the makeup's colour on her upper eyelid because of this.
I also think you need to emphasise the form of the eyeballs more. At the moment they feel a bit flat. A bit more cast shadow from the eyelids onto the eyeballs would remedy this.
The form on the lips feels too rushed, it is a delicate form which needs some careful thought for lighting.
The shadow on the nose and nostrils is a different tone too.
That should be enough for the moment for your portrait.
Some of your helmut sketches are quite good, there are a few which are a bit wobbly though.
Looks like you're putting in a lot of time with the Loomis studies, it's good to see. Try some of those from imagination to check your memory, you should see some remarkable improvement if you do this regularly.
The other sketches are all looking very good, you're showing strong construction and form in most if not all of them.
I love the last batch of studies! Your lines are getting better; shading is cool too.
I agree with everything Kungfoowiz said.
And out of curiosity, is that painting inspired by Dianae perhaps?
Thanks a lot kungfoowiz for a great critique, and yeah I totally could've spent more time refining things and adding more shadow/lighting, I guess I just wasn't too concerned with making it finished. And thanks Donna, and yeah it was inspired by Dianae for sure, I learned a few things from her and just wanted to make something from what I learned that went in a different direction a bit.
I'll have new studies up soon.
Cool! I love Dianae's artwork, it's CRAZY detailed even up close! I'd never have the nerve to do that. Her tutorials are good, you've chosen the right teacher![]()
Hey Jeremy
I like the woman in jeans, I think the sketch has a good flow to it.
Those arms studies are super cool too.
The red sketch is really interesting, I think you've shown some observation there, particularly with the bottle, I found that really interesting to see.
I see you're doing a bit of perspective, this should help you to make some landscapes and backgrounds.
Looking forward to seeing your review of Loomis figures. Keep up the good work Jeremy.
Edward
Wow, some great motivation and improvement here!
Your digital work is really interesting, but I'm curious to see more watercolors like in post #211 - very good!
Keep it up, results show from one page to the next![]()
excellent progress man!
something to be aware of is to make sure that with all the bridgeman/loomis/hogarth you are actually learning something from them - i know that personally i spent years copying out all the drawings from the books without actually thinking about what i was drawing - i was just hoping that drawing them would be enough (it isnt). dunno if you are doing this but its just something to be aware of (i wish someone told me this years ago tbh...)
keep making the work and making to progress man!
Thanks for the critique everyone, I'll be putting up some more gouache studies in the near future, and I'll be sure to apply my studies to my work too; I do sometimes feel like I'm doing too much copying and not enough application of it.
I've finally got a chance to do some figure drawing sessions, so I'll post some of those in the next post. Here's an update.

Your drawings are getting a lot better! Good to hear about the figure drawing sessions, I'm sure it'll help a lot.
