    Lowroller's Sketches - Critique essential!

I've been a lurker on CA for sometime and enjoy looking at other peoples sketchbooks, so I thought I'd start one. I know I have a long way to go as far as becoming a decent artist so I'm looking for pointers and and all are welcome to drop their wisdom. I figure interacting with other artists will be a good step towards improvement especially considering the calibre of artists here.

So a bit about my background. I'm self taught aside from tidbits I've picked up on the net and the odd book

So here's one from last night to get me started. This one took an hour with no reference. Hope the pic shows up

One from a photo ref ... bit more than an hour. Forgot the nipples but maybe that's good for a 'safe for work' thread, heh.

nice shading on that floating head. the bridge of his nose is pretty flat.
the colored one from reference is looking good too.

    hi
I know it's pretty tough to start, but keep going and you'll see improvements...
I propose to use more references during the start to build more confidece, pictures from imagination could came later...
    good luck

Thanks for the input! Been looking around the net for some fundamentals to give me a better foundation. I've focused too much on things like shading than form in the past so I'm going back to basics now.

    Cheers

Try to think of the eyes as 3D forms, its hard I know. Just think about what a side view of an eye looks like and what a front view looks like, then you know that the shape of the eye is going to become more triangular as it turns away.

Yep, the eyes are a tough one. Didn't notice they looked a bit flat. That's something I do a fair bit, not notice something until either someone points it out or it's been a while since I've looked at it.

So did a bit more practice ... this is some pencil and felt tip pen

Photoshop painting. I could have probably spent longer on this but I'm not sure it would have turned out better.

I'm kind of slacking off on this. Here's one I started last night and finished (as far as I'm concerned) now.

Photo reference used, but slightly altered.

Here's a bit of a first for me. Have tried a couple of times before to do an environment but didn't succeed. This turned out pretty well for a quickie (couple of hours)

Something a bit more polished (but not finished). Plenty of mistakes, especially the hands.

Update. Come on people. I'm just a newb ... Lend me your thoughts.

For one thing, I know, I draw people from front on to look a little like severe stroke victims (a bit lopsided).

Hey Silent! Yeah, great show. Just wish they'd hurry up with the rest of season 5. I'll have to watch the first half again now, just so I remember what happened.

Here's a bit of practice at a skyline. I'll try one using a bit of perspective next time cos it looks too flat. Colors are a bit all over the place too.

his shirt has a weird texture. it looks like thick paper more than cloth. fabric would let more light through.
    his glasses look awesome though.

i stopped at season 4. regrettably

A piece that started as just practice drawing a sky. Might try to turn it into something. Don't ask me what that object in the middle is. I just started drawing and then decided to see if I could make it look metallic and convincing in the scene.

I really love the progress on the heisenberg paint, but don't go overkill on the skin though, It looks cool but it looks like way to much time.
But hell if you're haveing fun with it go ahead!

    Keep the paintings coming!
