Here goes nothing, 2 pages of studying eyes later. Now I can 'see' clearly why my drawings suck (comedy drum roll) , must do more of these.

Maerrick: Thanks for the compliment! I'm more motivated now more than when I woke up this morning. There is some serious ass whipping going on in your SB.

COLOUR! Huzzah we non Brits who just spell like them! Pencils are looking better and better. Slow down a bit maybe and realize that your lines can curve. Play with the line. What can you make it do that you thought it couldn't. A landscape mayhap to mix things up? Bold lines are all good and dandy but put them in the right spot. I think, at least for me, if I can tell that my stuff sucks, I only means you're retained enough learning (hopefully) that you've gotten at least minutely better which = goodness. (Did that make sense?)

Pixie Trick: On the other hand, I'm still used to pronouncing zee for that letter. Thanks for the crit, I was just doing some of the mouth/teeth studies this afternoon and that very thought came to me. I was thinking how I can mix it up with the pencils, a landscape would be a great thing to explore right about now. Doing these studies definitely feels like its getting me out of a funk.

This week has just been a study of the human face. I'd like to top it off with a nicely rendered one, and as Pixie_Trick pointed out, a bit more cautious this time with my lines this time around. I've rendered the hair with Photoshop and did a bit of colour manipulation for the facial assets. It took about 3 hrs to render with pencil, and really quick adjustments with PS so that sounds productive to say the least. I can move back to conceptual/storyboard mode now. I typed too much, I better get back to drawing.

Improvement, improvement!!!! You have quite a few flat spots on her face (see chin for a large one), and the entire face seems to tilt slightly, but much, much better. I really like the architecture and landscape drawings.

You could go for the big brush next time 'round, couple it with the squinting and a lot of comparing values next to each other.
    Varied studies. Sweet.

@ SpaXe: Playing is right I better start getting serious. Oddly enough, I'm doing more studies recently which is cool because you can only get better in the long run.

@ DaStreets: What you like, I like! Thanks.

@ Pixie Trick: Thanks for that, at least its an additive correction. On the contrary, I prefer things tilted ;p No, I get you, the eyes might be angled wrong.

@ dwardo : I don't do the squinting often, partly because I don't paint enough. I definitely need to dig in to that also, much like the drawing studies.

Thanks for the comments guys, these studies are really pushing me along out of a rut. For reals.

Some neck studies and a few linear inks just to loosen up. The last image is Frazetta inspired, I just watched Fire and Ice and that sparked the concept. Some bad anatomy going on, like the big arm for example. I better study those next.

Good studies! On the pink-haired woman portrait, keep in mind that the teeth are often perceived as a whole thing, rather than individual pieces. So drawing the separation between them, as well as the brown gingiva, makes the woman look like she smokes and drinks lots of coffee. anyway, nice variety in that sketchbook! Keep doing studies and working on it!

This might show what I mean better. Because I can line up the centre point down her entire face, I'm assuming it's meant to be head on. Therefore, all the parts such as eyes etc. should be the same distance apart from that line. You got a bit warped at some point, and the left and right don't match up, which originally made me thing it looked like the face was tilting. All the warping was towards the right therefore the 'tilt'. I don't know if I'm just repeating something you've forgotten, I apologize if I am, but the inner corner of the eye = sides of nose, and the centre of the eye = corner of mouth for general proportions.

@ Abrodos & Pixie Trick : I truly appreciate the feedback guys, and apologies not necessary Pixie Although the image reads as a straight head-on shot, I re-examined my reference image and it had this awkward tilt toward the right and that may have thrown me off and completely missed the fact. That's wicked tho, thanks for pointing that out. Re-touched the teeth as well, thanks Abrodos. But maybe she's had one too many Lattes?

@ FAST ART : Thanks mate, drawing more of those specimen as of late. Speaking of which...

Got some updates, all I can think of this weekend was Frazetta's artwork and food. Getting back to storyboards, I'll have this work on the backburner while I continue with some more studies.

Hey there, thanks for the comment in my sketchbook! Keep up those portrait studies; your faces have come a long way and there's more you can do to improve there as well. I've noticed in general that when you have a face that is turned around 3/4, you tend to make the eyes a bit wide, as if they were being viewed straight-on. For your color, I think it would be helpful to do some studies in which you focus on how the color in human skin varies throughout the face. Think about which areas have less flesh and appear more blue, and which areas have higher blood flow and appear more red. Keep posting; you're almost to page 4! ^^

Thanks for the heads up Dierat, for those are things I need to address if not right away. Good points, I often overlook that information about the skin tones and just paint away. I really need to focus on small scale before doing these full figures. So till then, study study study.

    Throwing another sketch here.

Throwing an old piece here that I thought showed a progression of conceptual to final product. It's a combination of 2d and 3d, and still conceptual I called it Hell's Pinball, the lamest title I can come up with.

They don't look nearly as cool as my sketches tho.

I had this concept of two landmasses that is guarded by two beings, but the final didn't look as cool as the initial concept. The totems is 3d and just painted over in PS.
