Update December 5th!

Hello I'm swordhand. I started this sketchbook when I was 13, and I'm older now. I just turned 15 and I'm not that much better. I am really disappointed in that, especially since it became clear to me that doing work for a living instead of drawing would suck. I am really trying to learn now.

Critique my ass off, please.

Thanks for the comments guys. Helps A LOT with motivation. Today I tried using photoshop to colour an arm... make It look muscly. I'm not happy with the results though. Any Suggestions? I did grayscale shading and the a multiply layer on top with colour. I am having trouble rendering shapes In photoshop actually... Need to do some studies.

Use understructure and stop working on your arms they are good enough for now. Start instead working on intellegent ways to attach the arms to the body. Also, faces are 3d. This clearly isn't like a manual but: You are developing the face as though its a picture drawn on a baloon... a ridged one. Mostly this is because I suspect you just draw the face without putting understructure down fist and also (this is big) you are drawing the face straight on. This will flatten down your face EVERY TIME, use a tilt either up or down and to the side a bit. Just down sometimes works but... I don't know. its kind of a trap. Also develope the face slowly adding detail with each pass. Like so:

Thank you for the comment... It was extremely helpful. I tried drawing some more today, but nothing I was satisfied with came up. I'll start some loomis studies soon, and just keep drawing in general, so expect some updates. Thanks for all the comments guys!

Pretty nice stuff you have going here! If I may, I have a few suggestions. First off, I'd say you're suffering from a case of the hairy lines- that is, sketchy lines that are all rather light. You should try and develop long, continuous lines, and darker ones for the outline and emphasized areas. A picture with many different line widths is a lot more pro looking, and just more visually engaging.Secondly, I'd try and develop a more 3-D understanding of your images- that is, when you draw a face, it's not this line here and this line here, it's a nose and what a nose would look like. You have objects out of proportion or off angle, and that implies you used reference. If you grasp more what it looks like in your head, especially if you draw from real life instead of photos, it can make all the difference. A third point is I would reccomend ink, if you don't think you can clean up your lines enough- inking a picture and erasing the pencil is another great way to clean them up.

Really awesome work for your age, though. Just trying to make you even better

Thank you psycho. I will keep all that in mind when I do my next piece. I don't have much to show for today... just last night's doodle and a shitty scan of my sketchbook (too big to fit the scanner. I'll have to take pictures instead)

Keep it up man, you have the talent, just need to practice... When I was 13 I was told that I had to study anatomy, I didn't listen and here I am now 15 years after buying the Bridgeman books because I have to study anatomy.. so learn from my experience, and start now.. you'll save a lot of time..

Heyy you are heading to the right direction which is (1)"my future is drawing" I can say you only one thing... when an artist starts he must draw from reference as long as he observes all the mightiness of the figures! It is important for you now to take this seriously! And follow these words (1)... I noticed that you have great imagination so keep up the characters.

in the last piece you should add a neck, but the arm is cool! visible that your arm anatomy studies helped!

I added a neck on this one, and replaced the ridiculously large head, but the new one doesn't have a very rageful expression.
