    Captain GreySkull

It's Chinese New Years in Hong Kong and thought I'd take a nice break and do a concept piece. Completion from pencil to colors = 8 hours all done in PS. Most of the concept work I do right now is feature film - and I haven't done too much futuristic science fiction type of concept design work - so here is a piece I did over the holidays.

Take care everyone and be well. PeaCe.

Very very awesome, I think there's an issue with the placement and his legs and it looks like his far left leg overlaps his close right leg a bit. anyway great detailing that's for sharing!

Hi Pat, nice drawing. Just - is there a reason for why his head actually has the size of what his larynx would be? If the suit would be a gundam I could see that, but it dosn't work as one of those either.. What was your idea behind that?
    cheers!

The design I assume is taken from Wizard of the Coast's Space Marine Soldiers. Their anatomy design seems a bit skewed at times, but I am sure thats what this is based on like the picture below.

Its a cool solider. It has some really cool design elements. His claw arm is a good example. I just wish we could see a little more of his left arm, as that looks interesting too.

I have to say also, that his left leg and right leg don't match up.

If his feet are flat on the ground, then his left leg should appear further away and thus away from the viewer and his right leg should appear nearer.

I think that the right leg is meant to appear to be bending behind the body and bending at the knee though, in which case, his foot cannot be flat on the ground.

Also, if you visualise this well, you will not that the head is off-centre.

If you looked at it head on, the head would be to the right side of his body and not in the middle of the shoulders.

Nice piece though and good, strong forms.

Yeah, I see what you mean.

Pat, shouldn't you mention your inspiration and also put some copyright notice of your source?

This piece was inspired by Ultra Marines from 40K - The shoulder is homage to Space Hulks. I played Blood Angels back in the day and still love'm, I had a Captain on my team who's name was GreySkull . Thanks for all the comments!

    Wizard owns 40,000K?.. I didn't know that.

I really like you lighting and the awesome detail on the suit. But I really dont see the character fiting into that suit correctly. His elbows dont meet with where the arm would bend in the suit, his upper torso appears to be pushed too far back into the suit, his knees also dont meet to the knee joints in the suit and his feet dont reach the shoes of the suit, same for the hands as well.

The legs might be a bit of a stretch...literally. But I have no qualms with the arms. Watch the teaser trailer for the new Starcraft game. The hands could be controlled inside the suit.

But I like the design overall. A good homage to 40k.

    YEAH!! Pat Lee!
I've always enjoyed your work, for some people mastering comics is the end of the road, yet for you they were only the first stepping stones.
    Your work ethic is inspirational.

JohnBoy.3, Thanks for your comments. I was more concentrated on the detail of the suit. Perhaps I should have spent more time on the pencils haha! - Pencils took me 2 hours/colors 6 hours. I appreciate your comments John!

Patrick, thanks for your comments. Doing alot of crazy stuff lately, it's been fun and still doing comics here and there, but mostly concentrating on my film. China is a huge market so I think I'm in the right place.

Thanks for your comments CapTroop and Borilius!

this dude does feature film concept art and you're painting over his stuff? There are plenty of people in need for that in the CC section.

I checked your website Pat and I like those character designs, and that ship!

Patrick - Oops sorry I didn't answer your questions about 40K. I was really into painting the figures when I was really young - I had a whole Blood Angel army with all the Captains and a wide range of Space Hulks. 40K rules dude!

For those of you who keep dropping crits about the anatomy of the head and body not matching up correctly make sure you read some of the literature behind the Warhammer 40k Space Marine. In addition to a large outer armor, their bodies have been genetically altered to be 2 to 3 times larger than the average human being. Under that suit they are giants covered in slabs of muscles and a subdermal carapace. Even without the suits their bodies and heads are not proportional because of the genetic enhancements which only really enlarge the body below the neck for whatever reason. I guess it would make sense to leave the head unchanged to make it a smaller target in the heat of battle.

Very well designed and painted PatLeeArt. I particularly like the uplight coming from his helm and the aged look you gave the armor. In addition, I enjoy that you gave him utility pouches on his waist. Too often, I see Space Marine designs and wonder where they keep extra clips, grenades, etc. Good job.

Just my two cents, but I'm really getting kind of tired of seeing people do minor variations on the Warhammer/StarCraft Marine/guy-in-an-XXXL-armored-suit design.

I can't fault PatLeeArt's execution of the piece—it's flawless—but I strongly agree with JohnBoy.3 that the design might be more interesting if it related more closely to actual human anatomy.

it looks like a bad ass soldier painted simply for the sake of painting, well, a bad ass soldier. in that regard, it's a complete success. i don't think it matters that you stretched the anatomy a bit for the sake of beefing him up and you certainly don't have to mention any copyright junk. kudos on this guy and keep up the good work!

Hey Pat! Hatcha! Nice to see you here. Sweet design. I don't know what all the controversy is about, but it's a cool design- oversized suit. It's like the Iron Monger, but fantasy version. Happy New Year dude!

ANDY!! You seefut loung haha! How are you bud its been like.. 10 years since I saw you last dude.

I personally didn't really see a human inside that body he's pretty much 90% mech to me. I guess some artists here rather see it as a bio suit or something. So what have you been up to man!?

Maybe the whole mech is just a mobile support system for a Futurama-style head in a jar?
