I hung out in the crit center for a while but it seemed like every time I critted anything the poster left CA forever shortly after , and I didn't think I was even being particularly blunt..

Figured I was doing more harm than good and I should go crit my own failings or blab about art history across the street.

Flake, it wasn't you. It's just the law of averages that most people who post don't end up becoming regular, active members. You're not scaring anyone away.

Yeah, it would be nice to have more people in there critiquing. I spend some time whenever I can, but I really don't feel qualified to be doing that sort of thing

Here are some great links on formal critiques. (obviously no one has time for that but its great advice)

You're absolutely right, Blue. When I take a break from plastering and tiling, I'll pop in and try to do at least three crits each time.

Critique Center is my favorite! It's not often in life people solicit my opinion. Plus, I like to look at pitchers. However, I tend not to leave a crit on the ones that make me think, "you! Stop what you're doing right now and burn your tablet!"

    ROFL! Nice one!

I spend most of my time between the Crit Centre, Sketchbooks and here. Mostly at work when I do my crits, so, they're short. That, and I'm not at a high enough level to provide more than "that feels off" opinions and why, etc. Yes, they're useful, too, but not as in-depth as I'd like them to be. (^_^)

I've been on holiday for like, forever - and well, now I'm back!

    Good call Blue!

The Critique Center situ' is an ongoing thing. There is also a problem with the way people critique there. Being harsh is ok, as long as it's backed up with a constructive after thought. And then theres the harsh blase critique (which annoys me something cronic) and theres no need for such behaviour.....

You know, there will probably be more replies to this thread, than posts in the Critique Center....

Well, sometimes lack of reaction is a critique, too. Some of the things in that section aren't even fleshed out enough to react to. And a good proportion just need to be locked in a room with a pad, a pencil and Bridgman or Loomis or something for a few weeks before they come back to their latest character creation. It embarrasses me to repeat that as many times in a day as I think it.

I'm sure it's noob nature to get in over your head as a matter of policy. I sure did my share. Getting "ho hum" when you're hoping for "whoa!" is a critique. A little vague, maybe, but a critique.

That's one of the things i've noticed browsing through the critique section - there are some people there who, i dont think, are looking for crits, more they are posting up their Finished images (that maybe belong in the finished section?) in the hopes that the top artists will comment things like "Excellent, well done, you've won at life"

I generally don't want to critisize a piece that is already finished because it's more likely to insult them?

It's true. Even gentle critique isn't gentle if the artist is genuinely pleased with what he's done. I often have a "kicking puppies" feeling in Critique Center. Especially since I assume anyone really struggling is young.

Some things in the CC have been moved there form Finally Finished. FF is the one are of this site that's heavily modded, and if something isn't pro/semi-pro quality, it gets moved (that's actually why the Critique Center was set up in the first place). When the mods miss something in FF that should be moved, it tends to either get completely ignored or critted much more harshly than it would be if it were in the CC.

I do try to get in there from time to time, but I mainly browse these forums at work, and while I can give a written crit at work, I can't easily do a redline or paint over (no wacom here).

I'd hit the critique forum more often if it wasn't so cluttered with very rough sketches that makes it hard to find the threads that are ready for a good crit. I know it sounds harsh, but some people posting there aren't really ready for a crit. Like Stoat said, they aren't fleshed out enough to warrant much comment. There are some works in there that deserve a good crit, but it's tiring digging through there to find them.

I hang out in the Sketches and WIP. I usually start 6 or 7 pages back otherwise there’s a lot of stuff to miss. I hate it when people post something good and don’t get any feedback.

I try to post every now and then, but it takes me a long time to crit; between 10 to 30 min at least. English is not my first language, i leave pretty long crits with referencelinks i'll google up to help (takes most time to find a good one) and lately much more often with paintovers/redlines.

What's pretty discouraging then is to see that an artist doesn't incorporate any of the suggestions to the art, just thanks to be polite and continues the same old path. Now, i'm not megalomaniac enough to think i'm 100% right all the time, but i do think that if others agree on points and i do get a thanks/nudge... there must be something in what i posted that seems... right? Why else post for comments if you're not gonna use them? (And not all of these are moved from IFF.) Of course not all artists respond like that, but it still sucks, making you wonder why you put in the effort. And yeah, some works are supersketchy, so it's hard to figure out where to start critting. Most of the time i'll crit on irc, which is easier when it comes to communicating/ more instantly.

Weren't you the one who got glommed onto by that nutcake whose 'art' consisted of clumsy attempts to reproduce photos? Heh. What a specimen. That was just rotten luck, I think. Try again.

Oh, that reminds me of another thing that impacts my involvement in the Critique thread. I can take manga, I'm at peace with anime, bring on the furries...the one thing that that moves me to howling madness is people who bend all their efforts toward copying reference photos as exactly as possible (and the people who love them).

I don't mean using reference (I do plenty of that), or trying to suss out an old master by copying his work...I mean attempting to make a perfect copy of a snapshot. The very best thing you can possibly achieve going down that road is to recreate something that already fucking exists (and usually belongs to someone else). And when it falls short of perfection -- which it almost always does -- jesus christ it's ugly! I can't imagine anything more pointless.

When I click on a thread that turns out to be one of those, I have to click away fast before I turn into a foul-mouthed tsunami of psychotic rage. At first, I tried to offer a few helpful words, but it always deteriorated into a screaming manifesto and I had to backspace over everything and go stare at kitten pictures until my pulse slowed down.

And it's like having a neighbor who plays his stereo too loud: the more often I'm exposed to it, the angrier it makes me.

    Oof! Sorry. Kitten pictures...kitten pictures.

    I critique a bit
Sometimes I fall short of words on some of them
I always go the people with 0 or 1 replies because I feel bad for them

Well, it is much like non-art related things where you give someone some personal advice (usually preceded by the infamous"so what do you think I should do?"). Then they follow to completely the opposite of what you had suggested. Human nature I suppose. ;P

One thing that would be nice, and maybe should be placed in a sticky is etiquette...

If you ask somebody to crit your stuff, at least check back and acknowledge the crit. It's obvious that some of these people probably forgot they posted...

I don't normally crit an awful lot because I'd rather leave that to somebody with more knowledge than me. I wouldn't want to go dishing out the wrong advice due to being inexperienced, and sending them down the wrong lane.

its for this reason my initial critique is on average 2-3 lines long. If they respond, I'll go into detail. If not... move on. It helps me think critically about my art in any right, so even if I don't necessarily help them, i help myself. I've already looked at my latest painting and thought "jeez I just critiqued someone for doing this exact same thing".
