No way is it too old school, I have always remembered pure figure drawing and fine art on CA since I joined. Your sketchbooks is one of the ones I keep checking up on a regular basis.

HA HA Kevin I think you must be joking with us with your 'old fashioned' comment. I agree with Adam comments your traditional studies are the very heart of what Jason Manley and his team promote here and at TAD. It's people like you and your willingness to post, share and help others that help to make this such a great community for learning. I can't help but wonder what made you type that?
Also how lovely that you took your Mum painting with you, I bet you both had such a great time and such good memories.
As always you leaving me craving more!![]()

All of these are from life, most are demos for students at the Academy of ARt U in San Francisco ( where I have studied a bit and now teach figure drawing and some figure painting!). I am finding that I am getting closer to having a process for making my paintings successful ( though I rarely get to finish one). So it has taken a while for my painting to rise up to my drawing skill.. I think..
The "old fashioned" comment earlier was .. self doubt, self-loathing.. my typical day !
Thank you everyone for your kind words! A Torso tutorial ? Maybe - what would you like to see ?
Happy Spring Break ( if you get one!) !!

He, he, he Kevin beautiful drawings and paintings, I'm like 'I so want to be able to paint like that one day!'. Perhaps you may not realise but you have been the main driving force behind my drawing and painting desires for several years now!
I would welcome a tutorial of any kind from you, most of all I would love to be able to see a painting demo. A voice over commentary of why you are doing what you are doing would be great, but maybe I'm asking for too much....hehehe.
Cool sketchbook, love your portraits!
beautiful beautiful work
Ahh I'm falling in love with your value in the pencil and painting work. Amazinggg. One can only hope that one day.... one day, I will take one step closer to something like that!

Hi Marian! Me ? no. NO! Didn't we show up here about the same time ? I forget.. You have lived a more normal life I think and I chucked my life to figure drawing humans ( and painting them) out! I'm not sure who is smarter! I will do a youtube painting demo soon.. maybe this summer - I will let you know if it /when it goes up. I have been doing videos for drawings for the school where I teach that will be used for online classes.. It is nerve-wracking ! ( Lots of lights, lots of "crew", cameras, and you have to stand/sit in a weird spot so.. hard to be on game!)..
@Poetryman - well thanks I think ( I mean I hope I'm not getting worse!!!)
@GEB -thank you!

I haven't posted in a while - here are some practice whatnots in charcoal and paint and carbon and.. like that.. thanks everyone for your comments and taking a look at my humble struggles!
Everything here is from the live model.. 3rd painting in is a poster study - a technique for mapping out the tonalities in paint; I learned how to do this from Tony Ryder and Anna Wakitsch at the Ryder School.. Amazing artists!
The babies at the bottom were done straight up from refs taped to my monitor - no eye-dropper - just me freehand.. ( and no brushes to clean at the end!)..
