3D modeler trying to get into concept art...(Update: 1/16/13)

Hi all! I am student primarily focussing on 3d modeling but I am also really interested in concept art and would love to produce some of the work that people on this forum create. This sketchbook will have a bunch of my work in it. PLEASE CRITIQUE SO I CAN GET BETTER. I would love some helpful tips.

I think you will like the Bridgemann books in the Referance section.

The thread is titled I think a 1000 free e-books or something.

I think it's the first two books.

I would make sure to do studies of Bridgman or Loomis. Their works are on the reference section.

Your spirit towards art is admirable. My biggest piece of advice is to study from life as much as you can. It can help give you an eye for dimensions.

thanks for checking out my sketchbook, i made the whole picture more realistic today. you are right, i really use small strokes to often.

i like your last underwater enviroment, i cant open the link because im not registered on flickr, was it a study or did you draw that from mind?

edit: maybe you should draw more water activities (? dont know if this word is correct, sorry?) there is no watter flowing around the submarines for example. i hope you get the point

@Highland3r: No problem, thanks for checking out mine. Glad to hear my advice helped. I created the underwater scene from my head with references here and there to get the underwater look I wanted. I understand what you mean about water activity. Someone suggested to me to add bubble trails behind the subs, i just haven't gone ahead and put those in. Thanks again.

    Haven't Posted in FOREVER :(

Hey everyone. I haven't posted anything in forever so i figured its time i post something. I am really trying to produce some sort of decent work every day because I really want to improve. For now here are a couple of creature concepts I drew up and a really quick landscape study (I was really focusing on the colors mostly). Let me know what you think

    Axe Mania!

I really want to paint a close up detailed battle axe so tonight I decided that i would try my hand at getting the basic shape of a battle axe down. Some of these drawings are from references and some are just from my head.

    Anatomy!

I realized I havent done much anatomy stuff for some time now so i decided it was time. There are still a lot of issues with my proportions but I do feel like I am improving. I also tried my hand at using color to render the form.

    Revisit

I decided to revisit my underwater lighthouse painting today in an attempt to make it more appealing. I only made minor changes but they seem to make a big difference.

Hi Comp wiz, Im in the same position as you almost in that Im a 3D artist (professional, not student) wanting to learn how to do concept art.

Your doing fine so far. Just keep drawing lots and lots. Gesture drawing and Loomis and perspective exercises are what you need and some master studies. Work on the foundations and the awesome will come.
