Hi all, my name's Garth. Here's a random dump of stuff that I created this past year and some sketches done in the last week or so.
I want to step it up a gear this year, so hopefully keeping a sketchbook will help!
Let's make lemonade!

Nice motion in these, and your pencils are Very nice, especially the portrait. Good Luck with your SB, nice start to it.
Thanks Bill!
Some quick train sketches done over the last couple of weeks. Still feeling a little bit self conscious about drawing on the train, but I'm getting used to it.
I need to start sketching whole bodies and gestures instead of just heads. Hoping to get into some proper life drawing classes soon. At least then I'll get to have a good long look at my subject without creeping anyone out. It's hard to really capture someone's likeness on the train without letting on that you're drawing them. I feel like a sketch sniper!

More sketching on the train...
And yes, I swear there are zombies on my train sometimes. Cough.
Thanks Brun...I'll just keep plowing through them as often as possible. Who knew train rides to work could be so much fun?
This week's CHOW.

Duuuump. Sketchbook stuff and a couple of digital studies to wrap it up. The turtles stuff I plan on painting up one day soon - needs some refining before that happens though. Just realised how schizophrenic some of those pages are![]()
A quick study.
Great pencils dude!
Thankyou! I'm trying to get better at painting in ps, so here's another b+w study from ref. A couple of hours of work. Still cranking along with my train sketches but I'll scan them in some other time...it's late and I need sleep!
This week's CHOW. I had planned on doing a back to back good fairy/bad fairy illo, as a nod to Brian Froud but ran out of time. Maybe I'll go through with that one day. I managed to finish this (good fairy) so submitted it by itself.
This week's CHOW. Didn't make the cut coz my file wasn't named appropriately.Oh well...hopefully I won't make the same mistake next time! Got some holidays coming up soon so I might revisit this then and fix a few things. But for now I'm done with it!
I haven't posted any sketchbook stuff in a while so this is a massive dump. I've been using a moleskine plain notebook (A4) because I like the feel of the pages but they're fairly thin, so I apologise for the slight ghosting you'll see on some pages (I've resorted to only using the right hand in these books now). I've ordered a couple of A4 sketchbooks that I'll use for marker sketches to try and mix things up a bit. Soooo, from now on I'll keep two sketchbooks - one for pencils and one for markers. I've got some holidays coming up soon too, so hopefully I can find some time for some studies and trips out and about to try some new things. Weee...!

nice pencils man, keep it up. Your digital work is just as good!
Thanks Strings...I'm trying!
Here are some turtle heads I did a few weeks back. Just messing around and thinking about that tmnt illo I want to get around to one day![]()
Just a small update...got more to show from my sketchbooks but I can't be bothered scanning that stuff in tonight. This one's a quick and dirty (about an hour), trying to get better at working fast and implying detail.
Here's a collage of some sketches I did last week. Still haven't scanned in my sketchbook stuff...oh well it will be a reasonable dump when I get around to it next time. The tablet still doesn't feel as natural as paper and pencil but I'm getting there. For so long I've treated the tablet as a 'colouring in' device (ie start with a sketch on paper, scan in and colour with da computers ;p) instead of something I could use to actually craft something with from scratch. Of course, actually painting instead of just 'colouring between the lines' is helping me to get over this problem more than anything.
Here's my wip for this week's CHOW...Where the Wild Things Are!
And the final.
Ha! Thanks Brendan...clean uh, yeah - I'll have to work on that!![]()
So I bit the bullet and scanned in some sketches from my new books. Pencils are all my regular train zombies. The marker pages are from a new sb I'm keeping for marker based stuff that I let loose in and just do whatever. Please feel free to crit or leave suggestions for studies, areas of improvement... whatever!
hey Garth, impressive sketchbook mate, i'm subscribed. Really dug your green fairy absinthe entry, and turtles rock!
Hey Rod, thanks for stopping by! Yeah the turtles are always popping up in my books
Here's a study I did tonight...aaand I think I'll just leave it right there, I need some sleep.
Self portrait![]()
Hey Garth!
Some really sweeeet stuff you've got here! You certainly have a knack for the more cartoony style characters. Having said that, your more realistic work is coming along nicely. I can see a definite improvement throughout your train sketches. I think your best drawings are the ones where you can see that your pencil marks are more confident and less sketchy.
Brendan tells me you also studied Vis Com at Uni SA, Were you guys in the same class?
Oh, and I love your "self portrait". I just wish I hadn't had a mouthful of water when the image loaded... I've got my eye on you buddy...
P.S. SUUUBBSSCCRRRIIIBBBEEEDDD!![]()
Your sketchbook is awesome! I love everything in here, you're very talentedI wonder what your art will look like on say, the 3rd page? O_O
I'll wanna crawl in a hole and die of envy XD
Hey Jaro...thanks a lot for your comments. Yeah I guess the cartoony stuff has always been a natural style for me, I spent six years doing animation for web so it's sort of ingrained in me now. I work with Brendan at Krome, studied illo at Unisa but graduated in 02. See you round!
Elz...Thankyou! I'm really glad you like my sb...hopefully my stuff on page three will be a lot better (that's the plan anyway).
Here are some more train sketches, cafe sketches and some lifedrawing stuff (very rusty especially on the page placement) hehe :o
I kind of want to do something with the freaky Mario idea...
Another small update...once again I have some stuff in my sb but because it takes a while to scan all that stuff I'm just going to post these digi things. The superhero guys were a late start I made to last week's CHOW, didn't bother submitting them...
More to come soon, I really should try to update more often.
More train sketches and brain farts! Maybe I should spend more time drawing with a purpose![]()
your landscapes are lovely and your characters are bold and interesting, well done
