    jg233's Sketch Book

Some of these aren't exactly "sketches" but I wouldn't call them my best work.

You have a good understanding of shape and line. A tad more varience between values would really bring light to that.

I'd like to see some sketches to see what's going on in your head. :D

The values in these sketches are good. I always had trouble drawing those manequins, so praise be to you.

The shading on those studies is good, though , look at the proportion of the sections of each ginger, and how it changes. You notice that and get that down , you'll be better off with hands. Don't worry about the wrinkles in the fingers, just the shape of them.

Hey jg that’s nice, you obviously understand shading, but to be honest the features are crooked and not in perspective...You should study the free d-load Loomis book on head construction...practice placement for a while then go nut with the shading...not as fun but you’ll be awesome if you master it (I have to do the same...)

    Good start you have there
I think the best for you is to get some anatomy books and study the proportions and the single features of the human body first.
Your shading is allready very accurate, but thats very time consumming, maybe you try to get the forms and contours right before you spent so much time on rendering your image. That was (is) exactly my problem too.
    Good luck

    I know... but that's boring

I need to do that, I know. I downloaded several books by Andrew Loomis and I have been reading them.

It may be boring to study anatomy, but you will get better very fast and you will thank yourself after doing this.
It may be also very motivating to see your own progress while doing this, that´s what this sketchbook is for .
    Good luck!

Thanks for the help. Greatly appreciated.

Do you have any suggestions for books to read or where to start?

I think the best for you, is to search for the loomis books, like astrocrud said.
There are also good tutorials and inspirations in the tutorial and fineart/studies sections. After reading and practicing, you should go to the reference section and try your new experience on some human figure studies.

If you have problems to orientate where to begin, have a look at those awesome sketchbooks we have here.

I hope this is helpful to you.

Ok, thanks a ton. The only reason I haven't started that yet is because I have a portfolio review on Feb. 20th and I need to get other drawings ready to show then.

After I get a few more I am starting to study anatomy.
