Lots of figure drawings! Very nice. From what I can see it seems as though you focus mostly on an line based approach to drawing. Try seeing the forms "behind" the details. This will help you to capture a sense of 3 dimensionality. Of course, you start with gestural lines first, check your proportions (something I need to work on more myself), work on forms and then start adding in those lines. Try keeping your lines solid and to a minimum. Do more with less, i.e. use fewer and more confident lines.

    Rock on dude!

Nice stuff man, the life drawings are looking good and the portrait of B.Frank is wicked. Maybe try to think in planes a little more, some of your self portraits are a little lumpy and I think some planar studies could possibly help with that.

    Keep it up dood!

    @ jatherip: Thanks i will

    @ kingkostas: Thank you!

@ Lyno: gesture lines that what i need

@ Peetaer True! - right now i draw like it was a puzzle where i try to fit lines together, im kinda not focusing on form and mass at all . Form and mass added to my list of thing i want to improve

    @ Giorge: : will do

@ Ookchk: planes... sometimes i think my fundamentals go right out the window when i start drawing - must remember the planes!

    ----------

todays update is what i did last weekend. yea haven't had time to upload it before now . The workload at the university is freaking mind blowing so only art in the weekends and a lifedrawing session on Thursdays:
    - Poses from ref (trying two different shading techniques)
    - 2x Charles Hu studies
    - Speedy photo study
    - Sp
    - Male poses
    - Some random doodles
    - I got a temporary case of severe colorblindness while doing this one , the likeness sucks too.... soo

Here are some drawing from last weeks life drawing session. I'm still struggling to get the form to show, but i'm confident that more practice will do the trick.

Ok that was the life drawings - here are what i did during the weekend:

    - Characterdesign.com poses
    - Warmup male poses (quite crappy)
    - Sargent study
    - Storyboard based on "3-10 to Yuma"
    - A selfportrait
    - Another selfportrait. On these two self portrait, i'm still very much focusing on my brushstrokes.
    - A Movie still from the movie "Stardust"
    - Kevin Wueste Study (Hoping i might just get a fraction of this guys awesomeness one day )
    - Imaginative character

Wow, that new shading technique that you are applying your figures look phenomenal! It some of the best figure drawings you've ever posted. Awesome work!!!!

I've found that charcoal and conte are a great way to learn to draw better. Have you ever played with those mediums before?

hi mate.Lovely update. The digital figures look so clear and awesome and that sargent study is great. The 1 minute figures are looking good but due to speed there are a lot of rough lines.Maybe try doing them without lifting the pencil alot.
Also the character is looking good but i think the strong highlighs in the head ,are flattening some parts.
    Keep up the hard work!!!

Great figure drawing. For some of them, you're using a very dark line to illustrate the core shadow on a spherical object but the lighter part of the shadow (where the reflected light is) is so light that it gives the figure a metallic feeling, particularly pages 5 and 6 (in your last post).

@ kingkostas: Thanks for the comment! Not lifting you pencil in the short poses sounds good, ill try the next time.
I never really thought about that the strong highligt could flatten it out, thanks for the heads up

@ dierat: I have been fighting with that metallic look for some time now, but i have never really been able to put my finger on the problem. Now i know, thank man .

    ----
So here are what i managed to do last weekend, Monday and Tuesday. I know i should have more to show for 4 days of drawing, but most of my time in the weekend was consumed by cutting down a large walnut tree in my parents backyard... anyways here does :

1+2) 2x train-sketches. I saw how Lyno was doing train-sketch and realized that i had to start doing them aswell. It's at least 1 hour three times a week i spend in the train, might as well use it for something constructive

    3) Sargent study

    4) Another Sargent study (yes Sargent rules ;P)

    5) A failed selfportrait . Everything about it sucks, likeness, brushstrokes, skin tones, you name it. Got to do better next time.

    6) A character from imagination. tried not to use the strong highlight as kingkostas suggested.

    7) I realized that my understanding of the planes of the face (still) sucks. So a self portrait where i tried to put down some planes.

    8 ) A movie-still from the series "Deadwood".

    9) pencil character from imagination.

    10) Sargent study in pencil. Focused on the beards.

Hey Fumble, your studies are coming out great. Fundamentally though I think you should take some time in studying basic perspective and how to set shapes and planes in space. You say you still don't seem to have down the planes of the face, and I think the reason why is you need that basic practice on laying out basic shapes in perspective. It's a bit unintuitive and boring I know, but it's very helpful once it starts becoming instilled in you.

Try a bit more theory out for a change, and use it as warm up practice before you start the other things. You'll see a good difference in your life drawing as well.

    Keep up the good work.

Wiiii trainsketches, good thing you also taking some notes, I should do that as well . The first sargent study, wow strong piece, really like it . As you can see, you can use every skin color, but your values have to be right. Second studie is nice too. I also did that one a while ago, I thought it was a hard one ^^.

    Cool cool .

Keep up those figure and portrait drawings, they're definitely getting better. Try more value studies though...it's tough understanding color without a solid understanding of value. Keep it up though, you're doing great!

i am loving your studies.Ok dont misunderstand about highligh.WHen its accurate and mostly in the middle of the things(thats very abstract). For example in these portraits, you rock, only the old man have some strange rendered highlights.Wow hit me, i am just talking about details and something to make you search even more.
    You are doing great!!!

    wow, fantastic sketchbook man!
self portraits, photo studies, figure studies... you've got it all!
    keep up the fantastic work

one thing i'll crit though is that the saturation on your black and white self portraits is a little too much. er..maybe saturation isn't the right word. too dark i mean 6^^
anyways, i do the same thing, and then someone pointed it out to me. if you make a photo black and white in normal light, generally the full grayscale isn't used, it's actually used less than one might expect
sargent is a great reference for that. google image lol
