todays update include a kind of self portrait where i played around with color and stuff, when i started doing the sci-fi equipment i realized how much i suck at painting metal, so i found some items around my house that i painting for practice.

Wow. I like your self-portrait with the sci-fi equipment a lot. Your face looks awesome and I hope you manage to finish the rest with the same level of realism.

Metal is so hard. I find I can copy from life but then I don't understand enough to make metal where I want it. Whatever you learn and can offer as tips I'd appreciate.

hey fumble,those metal studies are good. and that SP is coming along nicely, as i said to Braintree, i reckon more of the imagination peices would be good... anatomy referances are great and all but keep those concepts fresh... if you get me?

Great job on the Benjamin Portrait. It really does look like him.

The top Portrait reminds me the borg a bit, but your concept is still very original.

from my metal study i learned that the shine is limited to a very small area (only where the light hit directly) the rest has a very traditional metal color and only reflect the surroundings a little (depends on what type of metal it is).

@ Cuervo: Thank you. I totally agree i really need to do some more imaginative pieces. I think i will join the CHOW.

@ Pigeonkill: not really sure what a borg is, but thanks anyways

Hey man, nice studies as usual. The sci-fi portrait is interesting, you might want to keep playing around with that and see where it takes you. I dig the metal studies too, the surfaces read pretty well in there so I think you were pretty successful.

Man, your short life drawings always seem so... easy and natural. But I think they are a bit of a pain in the ass.
Anyway, nice bridgeman studies (as usual

) and you're doing a good job with these MMA studies.

for todays update i have the finished version of yesterdays self portrait. And then i fooled around with different approaches to coloring. They are both HUGE failures, but somehow i must have learned something by making them, i just don't know what yet

This page is just great. I love the figure sketches, the metal studies, and the portraits. Keep working the flesh tones on that portrait, you'll get there. Are you using a new layer with mode set to color? It kinda looks like you're painting opaquely over your values with color.

I think there's too much "using black for shadows" going on here. try to figure out the colour of your light, and use shades of its complement for the shadows. And throw some other colours in there, too... colour variation FTW (you might try things like, it's been said that there are slight yellow tones in the forehead, some reddish pink tones in the middle of the face, and some slight bluish tones where your facial hair grows.)

Try using an overlay layer to color on top of your black and while layer. Most of the time the color won't come out exactly the way you want it so you have to do some touch ups. If you don't like that method then try doing straight up color from the start. Squint your eyes (well, that's what I do

) when looking at the still life you're painting to see the blocks of main colors...then put them on the page...get the proportions right and then begin to blend the colors. You'll get it with practice.

well i hope they are, but sometimes it is very hard for me to see the improvement

@ Ookchk: Yes i did surrender and used black a my shadow color

it wont happen again

Ill try with some more color variation.

@ jackpot_anjr90: The first color portrait is done with a layer set to color on top of my B/W layer. But i just find i so hard to control the outcome of the coloring, because the color i chose is not the one that appear on the screen, but a completely other one

So i really like the straight to color approach more. So the secound color painting is done with just a normal layer on top of my B/W layer. The result is still butt ugly but i enjoyed the process more

todays update:
There was supposed to be a lot of model life drawing, but the session was canceled (which my brother and i found out only after we had driven all the way to Copenhagen

)
So for this update i only have a life drawing and a life painting. I didn't finish the life drawing because the rendering was killing me

Yeah still life drawing can be a pain if you don't have other things on your mind. Once you start concentrating though it's like meditating haha. If I were you, try finishing it. The HD painting came out nice though, but careful with the shadow placement.

Nice studies! Those hands are intense! Your color seems to have improved with that study under the glove drawing...skin tones are the hard part though, but with your dedication you're sure to get it soon enough. Liking the character as well

For today's update i only have a colorstudy/self portrait painting. That is the only piece i have for today, cus i have been working on a major still life. I hope i can finish it within the next 3 days or so

Also good job on the self portraits. About that metal-surface-stuff: I think you're doing that really well, man. Maybe the surface could be a bit more shiny or reflecting. Could be a stylistic question, though.

Nice work! Have to agree with RoboMonkey on the samurai armor...really neat! With your digital work make sure your strokes follow the form...start with a big brush and go smaller as you go along...that might help. Keep it up!

I looked through your SB and I se a lot of progress.
I have some pointers.
When working with digi. I saw you were putting colors on a black and white value peice, you were poainting colors ontop of it. Its real hard to get a good color tone in the peice that way. Now what you wanna do is geta good base color on it ore several. Add a color layer in photoshop and fill it with the color/colors you want for the mood then you work on top of that in a new layer. This way you dont need to repaint evrything. Just add stuff and render it.

Hope you got some of that.
