Emil wants to learn how to draw & paint

Hi CA . My name is Emil and i have finally decided to start a sketchbook

GO TO LAST PAGE FOR NEW STUFF...

    ---edit 18. feb.---
moved the pictures from my first post to my second post, so i can change the picture being showed in the sketchbook dropdown menu.

Oh... and perhaps i should add a little info about myself . I'm 21 years old, and i study computer science () and business administration. Drawing and painting is my spare time hobby

btw... critique, comments, suggestions etc are VERY welcome

    --- edit 2. June ---
Got my degree in computer science and business administration with a average grade of 10,1 (danish scale, its kinda like a B) - daily updates from now on

    --- edit 20. dec 09
I guess it is about time that i update this first post with some up-to-date information. I'm now taking a Master in Software Development at the IT-university of Copenhagen. And i'm almost done with my first semester there.

    ---original post:----
I began drawing a few months ago - and this is my progress so far:
PS: most of the drawing are of statues.

Hi there Fumble! Welcome to CA.

You started with drawing few months ago? You´re showing incredible control over your pencil for that! Most of those studies are looking good, of course, there are some anatomy flaws. I would suggest to take a look at some Loomis and Bridgman books for that.
Great start anyways, show some more! I would also like to see some work from your mind. Smile!

Mr. Smile: Thanks for the comment . I have just downloaded Loomies and Bridgeman - so i will start doing some studies soon

I did my first digital painting about 3 weeks ago - an apple.
My brother then suggested that i should start by doing black and white
All of them was done from photo reference:

Great work on all of the studies, perticularly like your heads! On top of the suggestions by Mr.Smile i'd recommend Gottfried Bammes book Die Gestalt des Menschen, it's in german so you might not be able to read it but it has some great drawings.

You JUST started drawing a few months ago?!
Did you JUST start painting as well?!
Please say yes, because if this is beginning work,
you're going to be most excellent!

Imaginary: Thanks . I will take a look at the book, i know a little bit of German , but then again, a picture says more then a thousand words

oomgawa: Thank you . I must confess though, most of my drawings look quite bad, i chose the best ones for my first post.

    Todays update:
    - Bridgeman
    - Posemaniac (90 sec. and 4 min poses)
    - Life drawing from a statue made by Michelangelo Buonarroti. (took me 2 ½ hour to make)

Wow, man, your greyscale ref-paintings are doing great! You seem to learn fast The old fiddler is my favourite so far ... amazing how despite the fuzzieness of the portraits in general the photographic feeling still comes through in the faces!

    Keep it up!

    Today's update:
The second one is from a photo of a bust i took when i visited the Mets in New York a few months ago.

The last one is my second try at a digital painting in color (reference: the movie National Treasure)

AvisNocturna: wow you really think so?, thanks! I'm also feeling a bit more confident when putting down my lines (or maybe I'm just wishing )

    Sketches from today:
    1) some poses
    2) I tried a new thing today, blind contours. I read about it in "Drawing on the right side of the brain". It was really a fun experience, i could almost feel the left side of my brain shutting off
OOOo and if you are wondering what the hell those lines are supposed to be..... its my left hand ...
    3) Bridgeman
    4 + 5) Two heads from reference.

Hi Fumble, good improvement in your work! The digitals pop out. Might have to do with the pencil you work with: try working with a softer pencil to get some more contrast (or adjust the levels in Photoshop). Scott Robertson has some nice DVD's on values and rendering. If you ever get the chanct ot see them,...
    Keep going!

Nice work Fumble! I agree that you can see an improvement in your work already. I really like your collections of quick poses and anatomical studies. Your mark seems to have that confidence; you're not repeating you're lines much at all, which looks good, and you can definately 'feel' movement. I really enjoy seeing the 'Bridgman' work clearly adding to the 'pose' work as well.
Your digital painting is very impressive as well. I really hope I can learn to utilise Photoshop some day soon.
Keep it up! Great progress/quantity/quality here.

Bartovan: Thanks for the reply! I will try to use softer pencils ( usually don't go lower then 2B ). I will also take a look at those DVD's.
