dlock: no problem at all! keep rocking

p sage: hardly a master, but i keep trying to get there :p thanks for the super nice poetic words, they really mean a lot

    fishbed: thanks!

bosque: thanks! i like that one too, if i do say so myself

mrd33ds: thank you! i'm glad you like it

mat kaminski: much appreciated i mostly use mechanical pencils, with 2D lead. i dunno about the conrast, i guess i just try to push it up as far as i can go

mischeviouslittleelf: one day i'll kick YOUR ass, and that'll be a day to remember i'm not as pleased with the park ranger as i was when i finished it, something about him isn't quite right. he was hard to draw though, with a large cast shadow covering his whole face, with a lot of bounce light and thank you so much for the kind words!

austenfm: thanks a lot! the style jump comes somewhat easily for me, i blame having tried out a lot of different styles and techniques when i was younger (i even had a manga period ). hope you'll stop by again!

mike l: that's exactly what i love about mignola's style! his simplicity and dramatic shadows, and how he combines these to make a unique minimalistic style. jones is a master beyond masters, i really love his (her) way of describing so much detail with seemingly sketchy strokes. i could go on and on :p thanks a bunch for the stars!

malepart: hope to see you around!

algebra: thanks! i should move a bit away from pencils though, i don't wanna get stuck just doing what i already know. not that i'm a super hero or anything, but there are a lot of things i do worse than pencils :p

nickybeats: thanks! i'm not sure about the leaves though, they seem a bit monotone when i look at it now. oh well, gotta do more studies, then!

i haven't had a lot of time to draw the last couple of days, as i've been helping my girlfriend with moving to her new place. i have, however, stayed up late tonight to do a portrait of my father, which was a great challenge as i had no reference at all and thought it'd be fun to do it with ink and a brush (which i haven't done a whole lot of). the result looks like him, which i'm pleased with, but i'm not so sure about the brush strokes and whatnot. critique would be greatly appreciated!

thanks, everyone! advice on how to improve would be awesome, though!

dtrax: i did sketch it up, of course, if only lightly. i'll see what i can do about that livestreaming, i often do still lives in more than one sitting, though :p

here's a small batch of portraits i did the last couple of days. trying to figure out how to work with ink, but it's really hard when you're used to just drawing with pencils :p

comments and critique is greatly appreciated!

    thanks for all the love!

mane: what's "yer hint" mean? english was never my strongest subject :p

here's a small sketch dump with some studies and a couple attempts at poses, trying to make something look good without using ref whatsoever (i even threw a crappy self portrait in there for my own amusement, that was a tough one). i've rarely drawn anything completely without ref before as i've always been kind of afraid of stepping out of my comfort zone, but i figure if i'm gonna be awesome, it needs to be done. so here are my futile attempts at drawing without ref. i find it really hard though, but i guess i'll get more confident with time, and there's nothing to do except do it a lot

my scans will be a bit crappy for some time, as i spilled water on my sketchbook, which resulted in all the pages being bent, and scanners have no depth focus at all. oh well!

also, my friend henrik recently joined CA, be a dear and pay him a visit it might encourage him to post more often, which would be great because he really wants to learn

mane: thanks, man! i can send you a high res version that's cleaned up a bit if you want?

i've actually drawn a lot lately, croquis at school and stuff like that, BUT all the drawings are too big for my small scanner, so here's some small ones for the time being :p
it's a couple of self portraits and two study sketches for a portrait i'm planning (of baron harkonnen from the dune books for those who might know them)

Love the portrait sketches! The last one has an odd staring-off-into-space expression, though. Nice hatching technique. Keep up the good work!

    Liked the hand-gun idea.

I can see by looking closer at your pencil work that you use a variety of lines, but most of them are light... yet relatively thick (I need to figure out how to create those thicker yet very light lines).... they're very uniform in thickness (usually).

You have a great grasp of structure... especially evident in your self portraits. (And they do look quite a bit like Rembrandt's style).

Keep going... there's still more room for refinements... (you're miles ahead of me obviously).

Hi. I just looked through the whole sketchbook, I'm really impressed! Especially by your attitude, I could hardly see a flaw in your drawings on page 1 but you just keep getting better! It seems like you're extremely critical of your own work, which I guess is why you're so great. Wish I could give you a crit or something more helpful but I can't see anything..
Incidentally my school has a big book on Rembrandt and I've been studying his etchings too, I'd really appreciate it if you could take a look at my sketchbook!

bitjockey: yeah, i fucked up the eyes (was drawing with pen without initial sketching, and when i drew it there was no going back. hence the comment above it :p

p sage: the uniformness of the lines is probably because i use mechanical pencils, and i rarely, if ever, use more than one thickness for one drawing. glad you like it, thanks a lot

Vertical: thanks for the kind words! i hope i was of any help with what i said in your sb, didn't mean to sound like a smart-ass know-it-all :p

it makes me sad not being able to draw a lot due to work, school and whatnot, but here are two recent late night self portraits i've done. i never seem to get out of my comfort zone, gotta work on that i find self portraits to have a kind of therapeutic effect on me, trying to be objective when looking at something i think i know so well happy new year!
