    let's see some improvement!

I've been sneaking around here for some time now, but never really thought of making a sketchbook until a week ago. And then I forgot.

My name's Julius, I'm 19 years old and from Norway. I've been drawing since I ate my first crayon, but never really started painting until maybe a month ago. I'll try to keep updating regularly, and comments and critique will of course be greatly appreciated

I know more is better, so here is a zombie I'm working a bit on. The first colored one was my first attempt at coloring him up, but I didn't really like it, so I made the second one, which I'm more pleased with. Any thoughts, comments?

He was more an anatomy study than anything else, so he's a tad more atlethic than a zombie would usually be :p

I think you're off to a very good start here as you kept the approach very rough. It's all about refinement from here. That is if you wanna bring that pic further. Right now it's pretty cool already. But i'd add some more details. Maybe not everywhere but in certain parts, to give it some tension

Pandahund: Thanks! I'll keep that in mind, maybe work on it some tomorrow.

I just wanted to post this WIP self portrait I'm working on before I'm off for the day

Here's an update on the self portrait, I'm thinking of coloring it when I'm done with the b/w... But I can't seem to figure out how I should make my hair. I'll check out some tutorials on it, I guess, and does anyone of you guys know any good techniques? I have curls, by the way. I dunno if that's easier or harder :p

you're off to a great start already. roughing it out it tantamount; so that's a plus here. maybe try blending a bit more and pushing the contrast up just a tad.

Når det gjelder hår er denne og denne siden ganske fine.
Håper de hjelper, det står veldig mye interessant på bloggen hans ellers også.

Hey Julius, this stuff is gettting almost creepy! That SB is gonna turn out some serious goodness I like your values and your colours are good and detemined, no pussyfooting around, I like that. On the zombie thing, there are a few things you might (or might not) wanna look into:

First, make sure he really stands in space, I would not say he is floating or nothing, bu he seems to be sort of tripping, that said, it is a cool design, so keep at that. The colours are lovely, you are good at defining shapes, sort of like Uglow, so that is facinating.

Secondly, on your SB, as awesome as that one is, you might wanna take into consideration highlights. Usually they would not be so predominant that they would need emphasis, but seeing as you cast shadow is as strong as it is, I would imagine the lightsource beeing quite direct, so look into that I guess. Apart from that, you should finish this on black and white, and then do another directly in colours, that would be a good challenge

So keep at doing what you are doing, 'cause you are doing it well

Hope you are up for sunday sketching today!

Good start! The pencil sketch of that zombie is really promising, but your digital abilities haven't caught up to that level I'm afraid, but that won't be too long I think.

Jagmed: I'll keep the contrast thing in mind, as both you and Even has said I should look into it. I'll also try roughing more out in the future, and detailing some parts to make it more interesting

Piemonster: Takk! De to linkene var jo dødsbra, jeg skal sjekke dem ut hver gang jeg lager hår fra nå av Interesting stuff

Danuh: Thank you! I'll try keeping stuff rougher in the future, I kind of tend to over polish all my works. I'll work on it!

Mischeviouslittleelf: SB, is that self portrait? I'm afraid I'm not so familiar with CA language yet
About the zombie not being anywhere, I completely agree. I'll make a quick, simple background for him, but nothing fancy, as the zombie himself is gonna be what's important. I didn't really plan on coloring him in the first place :p
About him tripping, though, that was intentional. He's kind of leaning forward in a not-so-balanced pose, as I feel zombies tend to kind of stumble around aimlessly. Or did I get you wrong?
I'm really flattered by your saying my stuff reminds you of Uglow, of course, as he's completely awesome. I've got a book with all his paintings which I love to no end, though, so it's not entirely impossible that I'm inspired by his style.
After the SB is done in b/w, I'll definitely try making another one in color, trying to match the values of the first one. Shit, that'll be hard, but I bet I'll learn more than I've ever learned before :p

DStraX: Skal prøve å sketche litt hver dag, så jeg kan update litt oftere. Jeg har lagt ut noe nesten hver dag så langt, da

Fshoo: I agree, but as I stated earlier I just started painting, and that goes for digital painting, too. But I'll keep at it, thanks for the kind words!

Here are just some old stuff to keep the sketchbook alive, and to make myself feel better for not updating or getting time to draw outside of school.

The hand sketches are from late 2006, and the unfinished life studies are from early this year (I had little to no experience with charcoal at the time, so please excuse my noobishness). The first character concept is supposed to be a kind of desert ninja guy, and I suppose he was my first character sketch ever. The mechanic concept is quite new, perhaps a month old, and I realise I've gotta work on that kind of thing to kind of give them character and more life.

The mosaic kind of pic is maybe half a year old, it's a homeage to the video game Riven and its villain, and the girl face is a quick sketch I did tonight, from ref. The war sketch with the flag and all is a year old, and I don't really like it except for the upper right zeppelin :p

I'm learning digital painting, and I love to observe others' work. For having been painting only a month, these look awesome. I'm always trying to understand this process

mAkAm: Thanks! I always try to improve my anatomy skills by drawing stuff like that, and I'm glad you like it! Thanks a lot for the link, I'll check out some of those workshop files, be sure of it!

JailHouseRock2: Thank you! I'm forever trying to improve my line quality (i.e line weight etc.), and I seem to be getting somewhere.

Mantillman: I'm trying to understand how to paint myself, and I'm constantly learning new stuff. I'm just glad I go to school, so I don't have to understand all of it by myself. It's also really good how I'm always pushed to do new assignments, so I don't slack off too much

DStraX: Får jo ikke såå mange comments, da, du leder jo fortsatt

Gloominati: Thank you so much! And talking about figure studies, here are some more from a bit earlier this year, that I found when browsing through a sketchpad I had lying around

Digg at du ombestemte deg! Du må gjerne leke litt med den, jeg tviler på at jeg kommer til å gjøre den ferdig. Og om jeg gjør det gjør det jo ikke noe at du også har laget en

Last week we did some foreshortening sketches at school, and I discovered foreshortening is a lot more fun than I'd have thought. So today I did some more sketches
Personally I like the last leg and the arm best
