Dragonspits sketchbook (occasional nudity)

So I am mentally struggling and never have time for squat. so thought in order to embarass myself into working more, if I created a sketchbook, I might actually take my office doodles, and work them into something. what I post here, not meant as a dump, more as "this is where I am at today". and move on from there. Most of my work is illustration oriented. I do logos for folks sometimes, posters and such. but CA is just a bath of enlightment as far as energy and just plain eye candy. I love coming here, hopefully I can add to it and grow some. attached in the next couple of posts are mostly either digital sketches or doodles in my office. i dont really have a sketchbook, maybe I should get one duh.

first group is ink doodles from my desk. usually while Im talkin on the phone.

painting I started using my son and his new fencing thrill as a ref. Interesting enough, when I posted the ref, I saw things right away to work on. need to do that more often.

Actually managed an IDW submittal this week. picked something that I could work on textures as a lot of my work seems flat.

Sweet concepts man, lots of lineworks and digital paintings, that s what it's needed alot of practice so just keep going!

I would enjoy seeing more anatomy works of yours, and yeah keep with that habit of practicing from real life, very usefull!

thanks Lion. I used to do more stuff with peeps in it, but not in some time. though, that is where I need the most work, most folks do. thanks for stopping in, my first comments. yeah.

Hey. Some good starts to things. I'd like to see you do more studies of anatomy and the like. I think a lot of why some of your work looks flat is lack of shadow. Make sure you know where your lighting is coming from and how it hits. Keep it up! The only way to get better is to practice, practice, practice.

agree on the lighting thing. not enough dynamics and stufffff. anatomy, like I told Lion, yep, need to get back to that. hmmm two posters, both say the same thing, well I guess I need to pay attention huh?

I kind of liked this one pose and did a tad more work on it. I am considering turning into a painting if I can come up with maybe some interesting aspects.

I added that semi done painting in the front, as I wanted to change the av for the book. I liked the pose I did, and the painting had promise, but I muffed the head and then the background wasnt working. I might go back and redo it but most likely its scrapped. plus I added this new sketch.

Nice i can see that you have a general idea of how things are suposed to go and thats very good now what you need is just more and more practice!

Have you ever went by the educational and learning section of the forum? Alot of great help is around there, go there and explore youll fill up your visual library and get some usefull tips on anatomy, perspective, coloring and all that you can imagine!

Keep going, and about that hand that you refered to on the last sketch, i dont know the pose you wanted to do, but it would be nice if you directed it to the front instead of the side, try using simple hand skematics to help you build it. Go for reference on the hand if you want to be sure about it Poser 7 is a great program for that kind of thing, check it out.

But seeing I havent done much else thought I would post this. A friend of mine getting ready to retire and thought I would concept the car he is building. he absolutely loved it as did his car creating buddies. hangin in a custom car shop somewhere in South Dakota.

Thanx Kidult. I was thinking I really need to just do some studies, not really trying to finish stuff per say. so I started today, and on my notebook, they look fine, but I have a cheap scanner and they looks so bad, i dont want to post them. they look nothing like the drawing. I tried contrast setting, dpi settings, all kinds of stuff. I have always struggled with that. I either need a good scanner, or I am just laming up how to do it right. anyway, I did a couple of girl things today, and a nice foilage sketch that I am going to ink, but the sketches, well. the scans just look horrible.

I can see the difference. The girl is hesitant and uncertain the other images are confident, perhaps because you tighten up when doing computer drawing?
I mentioned this because I see the same thing in my work. I think it is because the computer art has a greater importance for some reason. at least my subconscious seems to think so.

I like your work a lot and wish that i could understand (and draw) vehicles and machinery the way you do.

you might be right on that note. never thought of it. the funny part is, lot easier to change digital than manual. however, there is still, that certain unexplainable essence of pen/pencil to paper vs digital.

thanx for the link and I thought the pics were awesome. so did you take all those or most? the way the girls are set up is awesome and yeah, would be great practice to start drawing them or using them in paintings. I would like to though, maybe get me back on drawing track.

I moved from Oregon to Maine for a job and havent had time to even check out CA for a while.
