High school adventures (Coffee and donuts, July 2!)

    What's up!

I'm a sophomore in HS. I'd like to be an animator or storyboard artist someday. I also dig character design. I have no formal training (I'm Rob Liefeld!). So I'm pretty much self taught, but I'd like to go to college and have someone...teach me stuff.

Anyway, this is my second sketchbook. Here's a link to my first one because contrast creates interest.

Well enough talk. Here's some studies I did yesterday.

    Poses from characterdesign:

    More to come.

Some drawings I did just a few minutes ago. Time for bed!

    Loomis muscle studies

    Quick still life

I felt this pose had a lot of energy so I tried to capture it in the lines.

That's all for now. Please comment!

Some good studies here. I do think that the character loses form in some of the action poses though. Keep at it!

    Your improvement is really big.
Keep up studies and don't forget to do some work from your imagination.

    ihatemexies: Thanks for the support!

Rotor: I rushed through the figure sketches since it's hard to really study a rough sketch anyway, especially with all the strokes.

Mr. Juicy: Thanks. I do some imagination stuff but I'm trying to focus more on studies and observations from life because a lot of animation schools are stressing those things (not the studies, but definitely observations and life drawings). And when designing characters Chen Yi Chang says its best to research and ref your topic because otherwise you just end up drawing the stereotypes in your head. Drawing from imagination is important (and I'm practicing them after my studies to apply what I've learned) but it's not a big priority right now.

Hey! Thanks for dropping by my sketchbook.

I can't really see anything wrong (could be because i'm sort of a beginner) but i'd recommend you too do some quick poses from http://www.posemaniacs.com.

Imaginary: Haha, I just finished doing a bunch of gestures from posemaniacs when I saw your post.

Saw some Vilppu gesture tutorials online. They really helped. My gestures used to be really chaotic and sketchy. Now I'm trying to capture the idea as clearly and with as few lines as possible.

Equality72521: I used to hate studying anatomy (check out my old sketchbook for studies that reek of epic fail), but I think I've matured over the past couple months and I've begun to be more patient. That's when anatomy started becoming fun. And it helps with figure stuff!

i really like those gestures. they have excellent clarity and rhythm. the poses are very clear and the line quality is really good.

silhouettes are good clarity practice for animation also

I found a picture of this abandoned mental hospital and I just needed to draw it. Took a few liberties with this one. I moved some trees around to make it clear and made the perspective a little bit more dynamic.

Chantz Hegemann: Rigorous anatomy study, sketching people on the street, poses from characterdesign.com. I love drawing people and I guess when you like what you're doing it'll show. Draw people every single day. If you're bad at something practice practice practice until it becomes your best strength.

    Chantz Hegemann: That's the spirit.

I made a character design! I call him Medieval Man even though his outfit is based on 17th century fashion. But alliterations are catchy.

He's based on Johann Kepler. Might color him in Photoshop.

I did some shading studies with my mannequin. I think I'm starting to get the concept of planes now.

I thought the first design needed some fixing (the black really diverted the focus all over the place) so I made it more color oriented.
