    A.C. Moore's sketchbook

Hello all, my name is Andrew and I'm an industrial designer from Illinois looking to break into illustration, so I'm looking for any helpful criticism you can provide to try to improve my work.

I'll start with a panel from a little story about a boy and his dog I'm working on.

    Hey there!

I like your story picture, it looks like it would make an awsome platform game! Which imo is much needed, seeing as Banjo and Kazooie is loooong gone.

I also like your vehicle design style, the prominent black outline and smooth textures make for a cool style!
I'd like to see some other vehicles in action on some terrain though. For instance an aircraft swooping through a valley or something... tall order huh?

    Looking forward to more

    Emma Frost Redesign

Name: Emma Frost - Andrew Moore.jpg
Views: 295
Size: 273.8 KB

Female superheroes seem like they are often dressed in painted-on outfits that seem to have little function besides looking sexy, and I think that this has less to do with sexism as much as laziness. It is simply easier not to draw clothes and just at color and texture to the human form. This is a shame in my opinion, as I feel that a character's outfit can help tell their story, and a skin-tight bodysuit with a few colored stripes on it doesn't convey much of a narrative.

The in-story excuse for these fetish-model style costumes seems to be that the character is using their sex appeal as a distraction, or that they want to show off a healthy form. I would buy this for a couple of characters, but not for everybody.

Emma Frost is one of the few characters for whom I think sex appeal truly is part of their stratagem, so I wanted to design some outfits that would reflect that while telling the story of her background.

The Emma on the far left is just starting college, knows about her abilities, but doesn't fully control or understand them yet. The chaos this causes in her life will lead her to the leave college and begin work at the Hellfire Club, which is the second Emma drawn here.

The second Emma is a cocktail waitress/dancer at the Hellfire Club. She is beginning to discover her diamond-skin powers at this point, but so far it is mostly as cosmetic trick used in her "performances". I imagine Emma gaining mastery of her abilities during this stage of her life and using her psychic abilities to manipulate those around her.

The third Emma is calling the shots at the Hellfire Club at this point. Through her guile and mutant abilities, she has made it to the upper echelon of this organization and is now The White Queen.

The fourth Emma has expanded beyond the Hellfire club to run a business/criminal empire.

The fifth Emma is now associated with the X-Men, and her outfit reflects her change in role from a behind-the-scenes manipulator to a field operative and leader.

The sixth Emma is an older Emma, now a teacher and professor to younger mutants, hoping to set them on a less criminal path than the one she went down.

Any thoughts on these designs would be appreciated.

I hope to take this approach to more characters in the future, male and female.

    I couldn't agree more!

Your business card looks really nice I think. And the Emma Frost designs look great.

Do watch your proportions when you draw people. In several, the faces take up too much space compared to the size of the actual head (not the Emma Frost ones, mainly the ones in post #11). Draw from life as much as you can!
