    Deerinheadlights's Sketchbook

Hello! I'm new here, and although I have art from my deviantart and hard drive, I'd rather use this thread for studies and WIPs that I really want critiqued, basically the art I do from today. A clean slate if you will. Anyway, here's my first thing, a WIP for the spring version of my COW entry:

Sorry if I'm supposed to be using the attachment, but mine's not working for some reason.

EDIT: This is my "finished" version, sorry I haven't added sketches, but this COW thing is pretty much consuming me. As always, crits would be great, especially on the background!

Decided to plow ahead with the summer version of the newtie guy I don't like it as much as the first, but here's the process:

Still got a lot of work to do. I also dug out a cat skull study I did about a week ago:

As always, feel free to rip apart!

    Did some cat skulls today:

I only like the lateral view, probably because I was really confused by the others. Never realizede cats have such enormous eyesockets. Maybe I'll try some deer skulls later, and then begin on bodies.

Here's a mess of sketches from the past 2 weeks that I actually like. I have to do some studies tomorrow... Besides workgin on anatomy and such, I really really want to work on differentiating all my people; they all look the same!

I started the fall form of my COW entry, it's more of the style of my spring one, so I may redo the summer one. At least the critter, I like the background. Anyway:

Almost done rendering the creature... it still needs a name. Any and all crits on this appreciated!

Augh, I had to rerender my entire Hydrondarun (lol a name!) because I saved the file too small x.x But I finished it today, since I was in such a productive mood:

Next I'm redoing the summer one.

I totally hated my summer one, so I gave it a redesign. I am sooo happy I did, it looks a million times better (well to me at least). I should probably push the highlights and dhadows though...

Awesome work so far! I love your method of coloring, as well as your creature designs. As for your people, you should do some individual facial structure studies. Noses, eyes, cheeks, the sorts of things that make every person unique Speaking of which, I need to do that too

Anyways, keep it up, hope to see more!

Thanks Talo! Yeah, studying features is probably the best way to go about it. I'm also going to try to draw all my teachers' faces next week.

Here's a WIP of my winter creature. I decided to use a cutom brush instead of sitting there poking my tablet for hours. The suction cups are reallly irritating me, they're way to small and random.

"Finished" my winter piece. So glad I reworked those suction cups:

Also, I drew a Nile Crocodile for my Art 100 thingy. 51 done so far

All of my art 100 things are on my DA account: http://deer-in-headlights.deviantart...ry/#Animal-100 . I don't want to post them here because many are so old and terrible >.<

Pretty good studies, but they're a bit messy. The deer skeleton with the random black crayon marks doesn't do much for the good, solid representation of the skeleton itself. Give it a solid, chunky black background or leave it off altogether, let the paper tone be your bg.

The Onion studies are a level above everything else here, especially the pinkish one with the green stalk. The pumpkin looks like its perspective is off, but it could just be a bit lumpy.

Generally speaking I like your sketches, although none of them feel very polished, they're on the road. SOmetimes, like in the skeletons above, the line is a bit weak and the shading too strong, and not applied across the planes of the form. Your crocodile seems twisted too, with the back legs splayed and the front legs in line with each other, yet his body doesn't seem turned enough for this, like his back right leg (sticking out the top) is broken off or disjointed or something. His colouring is good though, and his head looks right, but I'm no expert on crocs.

I like your CHOW, but I have no idea what you should call him. Hope I've been of some help, I don't want to seem overly critical. I like your work, get onto the human skeletons & anatomy & keep posting!

    Thanks, donalfall!
Yeah, my studies make me really impatient, it really shows. I gotta learn how to sit down and draw for a long time instead of rush it.

For the crocodile, my reference on him was twisted like that, but it's leg looked different, so I messed it up. I should have just had him floating, I guess I got a little too ambitious.

Thanks for the crits, I'm definately going to start some human skeletons and such!

    Yay studies yay

Not to scale obviously, I just didn't have to upload to many files. The skeletons is pretty lopsided, but the killer is the rib cage. Augh, how do you do that? Make a bunch of ellipses and then add the sternum and details?

    Muscles are fun.
I need to do studies, but lately I've been utting it off because I'm scared of doing it wrong >.< Just gotta draw self!

Big group deer picture I was working on. I totally messed up the lighting and the moose's leg, but I'm pretty satisfied with it.

From left to right, it's a Pudu, sika deer (back), fallow deer, reindeer, marsh deer, moose, Pere David's deer (front) and white tail deer.

Still having troubles with rib cages and fingers/toes. I should probably finish skeletons before I move on to muscles.

Did an acrylic painting on a cavas bag. I hope it stays...

A study from the same photo I referenced from the bag.

Something I did in December that I forgot to post yesterday, woops.

The blue one's ribcage looks a mess. My favorite one is in the middle, it was supposed to be based on a hairless sphinx cat.

WIP for my evolved blind cavefish COW entry. It's fins and feathery gills evolved into whisker things that he uses to gather mold off the walls of his tunnel. When he gets to the other end he eats the mold off his whiskers and travels back the his nest.

EDIT: I started a new sketchbook irl today:
