    Complete Unfinished Painting Juice

So, I've been thinking of picking up a mentor ship and dilly-dallying about the whole thing, until I saw that someone I knew got picked up. So I decided it was high time to do one of these sketchbook dealies. I have a blog too but this has a much more direct audience connection.

I don't really want to post old work so I whipped up a boxer study to open the topic.

So, some intro tidbits about myself as an artist:
    Strengths:
    - Working from observation
    - I'm pretty good at being able to critique myself and I can correct most drawing problems in my work. I enjoy my drawings, I can look back at them and some of reminisce about the line work.
    - Looking at other people's work
    - I love looking at colors, particularly colors in flesh. I like finding little formal quirks in good work. Trying to dissect what makes this work and finding compositional patterns.
    - I find this an odd strength, but I meet so many people who feel cowed by good work. I actively look for good work because I like to try to break it down to the good parts, trying to figure out the process and breaking down the strokes and tools used.

    Weaknesses:
    - Being productive
    - Aside from doing studies, I don't find myself willing to be productive in my "creative" work. It feels disconnected if I work on some random character for practice. If its an assignment or for work, I'm all over it, but otherwise I have other ways to fulfill my creative impulses. I have a hard time doing stuff "just because" even though I know I need to do them.
    - Process
    - Having a studio art degree, a lot of my process comes from working through observation. I can rely on information being there to build up on. So its always a shock when I realize I need to invent information, things get hazy and vague and it damages the picture.
    - I have poor pre-sketch habits, I really ought to thumbnail out pictures where there's a lot of information I need to invent but I tend to just go at it which randomly succeeds/fails depending on how quickly I find something exciting to latch onto for the whole picture.

Saw a job opportunity as a matte painter and I noticed that I didn't have much experience doing landscapes. It came out very blobby... I tried checking out my collection of artists to see how they handle such subjects but no luck. Inorganic city layouts are very unpopular on my artist list as it seems! Oh well, time to figure this out by myself...

Trying to avoid incorporating photos directly into my work but I'm starting to see where that would make it exceedingly difficult to pull off without.

So I just got introduced to posemaniacs... pretty intense workout. Its been awhile since I've drawn from life so bear with me if some of my lines seem less than efficient. Also, posemaniacs is intensely different than conventional life-drawing. "Oh... I appear to be underneath the model looking up... I... I...."

Doing a set of zombies, inspired by a browser game I've been playing called quarantine 2019. You sorta run around as different classes of zombies/civs and try to turn each other. Hoping to get one of each class. I saw this as a kind of smart zombie, which explains the little light reflections and the kind of mundane expression. I tested a more sinister devious expression but I liked this one more. "Oh, what a somber-looking guy... wait... hes a zombie!"

Also! I suck at zombie gore!

The second piece you have of the tree is great. It reminds me of that classic comic book/fantasy style of painting. Like Julie Bell, Boris, or Frank Frezetta.

Thanks for the replies. If you want more you shall have it!

Was very excited to start doing jobs for Sony Online Entertainment and I finally got permission to post the illustrations. These are card art for the online TCG, Legends of Norrath.

really great start, you definitely have some talent.

tho i'd suggest doing more colour studies, it just seems like in some of your works the theres this over saturated/high contrast feel which is rather unpleasant. also composition seems a bit weak in some of them.
    otherwise keep pushing on!

Yeah, I plan on doing more color studies, I'm actually sort of in a slingshot in terms of saturation. Some of my earlier works tend to be very muted so I've been forcing some stronger colors in my work.

    In the meantime. ROBOT!!!!!

So, I was giving a demo to Animation Idiot with painting in photoshop. We were both doing a portrait from a photo and I thought I should post mine. I happened to save them out as progression shots so I might as well post them too.

I was bored and I asked around for what I should draw, Bapsi yelled "PRINCESS LEIA!"

    So I present PRINCESS LEIA.

I actually had a lot of problems with capturing a resemblance, I'm out of practice.
