    GaaraMonster's Sketchbook -January-01-09

Ok, so i'm new here, and i've read some many good things about the forum.
For too long time i used to draw in a very "anime-ish" type, you know big eyes, little noses, the whole thing(and horrible proportions). A few years ago i decided to "kill" that style...it has been really hard, and today i still see the anime-thingy in my drawings. I would love to get some real crits, not just the regular "OMG It ur 1s true art!!11" i usually get in other sites.

So here i leave you some of my most recent sketches and really unfinished stuff, i'll try to update daily.

Wow, that shell creature is really cool. :] Your work is good, listen to them! I really like the shell-creature, very interesting!

Suggestion tiem: some of the muscles on your people seem to be just lines rather than shaded form; you seem to know how the muscles should be placed, just shade the form. I'm not really sure if you're still going for an anime style...? The eyes, unless you mean to keep the style, still are sort of styled anime, a little big. Maybe try a couple studies for that? Other than that, keep it up, you've got some pretty cool drawings!

Oh, i see. I'll try this, i'd never realized about that detail

I don't want to keep the anime style, but what i want is to find my own, still i don't care it is look a bit cartoonist...but i want to be able to manage the proportions well.
(ugh..language barrier, i hope you understood what i wrote.)

    As Shalite said: do studies.
In order to get rid of any influence, do life drawing, a lot of!
Your own style will emerge patiently. Anyway the Mosca
cartoon shows you're not totally stuck in anime style c:

I can see some improvement in your last post, but still you should practice more anatomy, most of your drawings look a bit off in that subject.
Also you wrote that you wanted to get rid of the anime style, then you should draw eyes more realistic. Right now they look pretty manga-style.
By the way I like that ``soup in my waiter`` cartoon, it's pretty funny!

    I've been busy these days.
    Some new stuff.
As you can see i still can't get the proportions sometimes.
The last one is an unfinished work for a (crappy) webcomic i own.

I think you have a good start here. I'm in the same boat as you, I've been drawing anime for a while and I want to get more realistic. I think you are farther along than I am at getting more realism. I think what might help is if you break down parts of the body like the eyes and practice drawing realistic eyes then try and apply that to your drawings. Also practice anatomy, it defiantly helps. I would suggest Andrew Loomis books they have been quite helpful to me here is a link to a place where you can get PDFs.

so yeah I think that's all the advice I can give, so good luck and keep up the good work. =)

I think you're off to a good start. It sounds like you want to improve and head towards a more realistic style, but it looks like you still like drawing your stylized characters. Why don't you try drawing from reference and turning them into characters. it's a good way to have fun while still getting some serious studying in. You see a lot of mistakes you're making very quickly.

I can understand the feeling of trying to get rid of that cartoony style. I'm having the same issue...
Looks like you make your eyes to long, thus making them look cartoony and anime like. Try making them shorter and less stretched out.
