Red face Concept Artist / Film Director

Hi im new to this forum..so ill get to it...

Is it better to just dive into film directing at my age now while keeping concept on the side as support? Or it is it better to slowly make my way through concept and move up over time? And how would someone such as myself who is interested in concept design go about finding internships in this field?

I am currently attending G n o m o n School of Visual Effects but have come to realize that I enjoy more the traditional forms of art than the technical aspect of it (MAYA, SKINNING, Riggin...). I love being in the drivers seat and am comfortable with directing. I cant see myself sitting behind a desk day after day in a dark room. I enjoy the need to oversee everything and bring it all together. Currently I am 25 as of AUG 08... I have been giving this alot of thought and would like to hear your opinions.

    Where I stand:
    - Strong traditional background
    - love concept Art
    - good at understanding and telling stories visually (story boarding), good at
    visual communication
    - overly ambitious
    - passionate about concept art and film directing
    - no filming experience (just home made movies and projects for classes)
    - did not attend film school
    - know little about technical programs, just the basics
    - photoshop experience
    - love watching and learning from movies
    - love sculpture

You and a million other people.

How to end up directing films:

The hard way1: Write a few hit hollywood screenplays and offer your next one for less money but only if you can direct.

The hard way 2: Make your own movies on the cheap and get it into some competitions. It might pay to know a bunch of young excellent actors. The days of financing a movie on a credit card might be gone, not sure though. Sell the film to distributers or a cable channel.

The hard way 3: Direct you own advertising commercial for a major brand and see if you can get some play off that into directing more commercials. After reaching the pinnacle of directing commercials, have your agent approach hollywood for you.

The Hard Way 4: Go to film school, make the best student film seen in years, and win some award or festival and begin taking meetings.

The Guerrila Way: Make some insanely funny or clever YouTube videos and get a lot of people to watch them and cause a national phenomenon. Then take meetings. Or make a website that has video content that kicks ass and which gets wildly popular. Then take meetings.

    Hope this helps.

You've picked two difficult careers, so you'd better be damn sure there's a way to put food on the table.

    From,

struggling director who makes living gaffing for film and theater.
