@theartisticwonder - I wish more comics from the Philippines got translated into English. I've seen some comic art from Filipino artists that just blows me away.

Today's update:

I was curious how this old sketch would look with some colours tossed on. I did the sketch from life but had a photo ref lying around as well.


At some point I was bored in a meeting and thought I'd try designing some different cartoon characters with small eyes and big noses. Then I got interested in masks but before I could make more masked characters the meeting was over.

Ugggghhhh. I've been sick for the past week. (Sunday to Sunday. For a cold that didn't even involve coughing or sore throats it totally laid me out flat.) I got next to nothing done. I am slowly getting around to scanning all the things lying around the house.

I'm working on cleaning these next two up right now:





And on January 22 I went on Sketchcrawl 18 and sketched a few things. Mostly around my house because it's January and going on Sketchcrawl in Alberta in January isn't easy.

I always forget how much I like working with pencil crayons. Maybe once I move my drafting table into the new office I'll pull them out more often.

I've got a bunch more random sketches to do crap with, maybe once I stop feeling like phlegm on toast I can get around to it.

Trying to redesign my Jabberwock. This is the second go this week. Much much better than the first go, but still pretty ridiculous-looking. Is it just that dinosaurs are extremely ridiculous or is the pose particularly dumb? Help me out here.



I think this one will be worth finishing once I can get some better bike reference. (Wing reference is relatively easy.) So. Anybody got a glass floor I can ride on?



And this is the stream finished up. Does it need more detail? It seems a bit flat but flat is how I roll.



I'm going to try and drag this sketchbook out to a hundred pages. I figure that's about 9000 drawings, three at a time. So I guess I'd better get scanning.

Just some weird stuff from last week.

An overpaint of an old, rather crummy image I made long ago. I found it on my hard drive and thought it was charming enough to improve a bit. I'm still working on it. I'm not sure I like the necklessness and large head on the girl but I am aiming for somewhat creepy so I can't decide whether to keep it the way it is.


I saw someone on here playing around with B&W textures and thought I'd give it a go. Kinda interesting for a first try.


So on Saturday I finally got my Cintiq and I've been trying to figure out how to use it since. Art production has plummeted. There is a learning curve! Or at least I need to figure out how to set the thing up so that I don't kill my back. So far I've managed to work on some comic strips and I can see that I'm going to love this thing to bits -- in about two years and three desks, when it's set up the way I like it.

Been busy lately so I haven't been very good about scanning and cleaning things up. Cat characters (the one with the eyepatch reminds me of something. Danger Mouse maybe?):


And I've gotten into sculpting egg-shaped bunnies. Warning -- following the package directions will result in toasted ears:

You could vary the thickness of the lines according to distance and light for a more natural look. Of course some cartoons are exceptions, but if you try it you might like it.

I already do that to a certain degree -- although I like using larger lines to denote volume rather than light. But thanks for the suggestion.

Oof! I dropped out of the world two weeks ago and started working on a comic strip. I'm hoping to have around 30 strips done by the end of May. If I can do that and I don't run out of ideas by then (a big if) I'll be launching the strip in June.

After the last digital painting turned out... not so well... I've decided to get some practice with roughing out scenes digitally. I'm planning to do several of these a week until my roughs look better, starting with grayscale and moving to colour. About a half-hour each, give or take:
