I actually like them a bit flatter; makes them more cartoony.

Why have you lost the link to here off your sig - put it back.

I just realized that I missed your sketchbook last time I posted! I'm sorry
The hands are very good on the Amanda Palmer pic, you got the contrast really good on them! The drapery studies are wonderful too, I really like the basic line one. And great job on the Lana drawing, I recognized those lips right away

Nice to see some gestures again in #725! To me, they feel most effective when you stay organic and draw 'freely'. As opposed to the more angled (quicker?) geometric lines. Though they do seem useful for the quick sketching.

You've put some real effort in the drapery studies. It's striking how realistic the little rainbow-shaped piece of fabric looks. It must be the values. If I squint my eyes or take some distance, it seems to be sitting "on" my monitor.

Nice work on Amanda Palmer. I tend to neglect ears, so I've noticed the attention you paid to hers. Those blacks in her mouth, eyesand just above her ear seem a bit heavy. Almost like 'holes'. I think you'd be better off with a dark and very saturated red and browns respectively. And I can see the folds you've practiced!

    zou Cheers, will do thanks

Dizon Thank you, I've posted the ref so you can see, it is quite flat, there's a shadow under her chin that I tried to emphasise.

Blackspot Cheers Oh that was a mistake, I put it back

    Farvus Thanks + cool!

Gogo Hiya, that's ok and thanks very much

Anthis Thanks, the gestures yes, I like them when they flow too, though I do like the more geometric simple shapes sometimes. Thanks for the crit on Amanda, I didn't notice that, I will work on it.

    Hey Angel, I didn't realise I hadn't posted here yet :/

Totally rocking the caricatures up in here O.O

You must have some serious knowledge over expressions after doing so many caricatures, I can imagine that being very useful for creating diverse characters from mind.
    Crit for a crit!

Crane Thanks for stopping by and thanks very much for the compliment, I'll keep working on it for sure.

Good job! You're style is becoming more noticeable. And the lighting is much better. You could differentiate the light and shadow areas. Not like the Amanda Palmer image which just falls flat. Maybe you could have emphasized the lighting on the latter just a little more. Don't be a slave to your reference. Because it is what it is.

Back to Juliette Lewis. I just feel the length of her arms feel inconsistent. I know the other one is foreshortened but it doesn't feel as long as the other one. Try flipping the image horizontally and see if you can spot something that doesn't feel right.

Thanks Witcrack - Oh, cigarette cards are what you used to get in cigarette packets, like trade cards, collect them all kind of thing (found some history on it -http://www.cigarettecards.co.uk/intro.htm)

Rob Thanks very much and I'll try

Dizon Thanks and yeah, I am a slave to reference *hangs head*. I'll go back to the Amanda and try and fix it. Nicely spotted with the arms, I was going for exaggerated but it did look odd.

zou Thanks and now you mention it, it's obvious. Lol, I have a total blind spot to symmetry sometimes, I think it's because of the way I hold my pencil, and I don't spin the paper, I will try that next time.

    Gogo Thank you

u could add more saturation (or more emphasis on her face) in your next update ( the red dress is drawing attention)

The first portrait of #755 is striking for several reasons.
You did some interesting experimental linework on the hair, which really contrasts with the face. Like, as if the linework is different stylistically. Which frames the face nicely. The lost edges (at the hairline and her right shoulder) add a great effect as well. Great work, shame you seemed to lose interest in the dress!

Looking forward to how Juliette Lewis turns out. Solid forms in her face. Hair seems to be getting tricky though. When I check google images for her, one thing I'm noticing is how the hair colour/value is different above and below the highlighted 'ring'. Like, in the image on her Wikipedia entry the hair just below a highlight is considerably darker since it's facing downward. Your version has just a single colour and the highlight.
Or perhaps you simply hadn't really started on the hair yet ;O

Wow very nice portraits here, and the last caricature is especially nice. The shoulder connection seems a bit strange, and the arms' length is a bit too inconsistent, seems you got it down in the drawings though. Just my 2cc

    Dizon Thanks

Zou I'll watch out for that, thanks for the crit

Anthis Glad you like that one, I did spend longer on the hair, and lost interest but it was mainly a head study. I'll work on finishing stuff off a bit more though. I hadn't really started on Juliettes hair yet, but I'll keep your crit in mind though, I see pictures of her with both brunette and two tone, I think I'll stick with the brunette as it's her natural colour but I will play around with it more. Thanks

Continue Thanks very much and for the crit on Juliette, I'm gathering alot of useful observations.

Nice animal studies. I like the loose pencil strokes.

So who's the latest caricature? I would probably lower the value of her eyes since they're completely in shadow. In this lighting situation your lightest values would be in the lit areas of her face and the hair. Also there's a tangent happening where her nose is touching the side of her face. Maybe have it overlap a bit.

Cool stuff! I like the portrait of your dad. I feel you could work a bit more on the eyes. Feels somewhat flat.

Looking good on Dragon Riders. Hope you get to work on it more.

Nice Burton sketches, too. I think you're getting a good idea of the head shape. I don't feel the likeness in his eyes though.
