Zou Cheers the sculpey is really easy to use, I was so surprised, it was bit too small to get the details in I wanted so I'm glad it kind of works despite the size.

ZephyrX That's funny, I recently saw 'marriage licence' on another thread / site and the first thing I thought was...'Her shoes! I must have a pair...so cute' I'm good btw, ta! thought I'd have spare time to carry on with my caricatures but got two more commissions to do this month and another on the way (wahay!)

Update New commission for my good friend Erica who is featured it's a present for her friend Mary as you can see, and Mary is a huge Sex and the City fan, and loves her dog biscuit. I'm going to move biscuit to the right a bit so you can see Mary's legs as she looks a bit weird atm.

great stuff angel. you have a nice 'stylization' to the human figure but retain the correct proportions i also noticed your versatility from going between caricature and a more realistic representation of your subject matter a good skill set

SSG weekly study challenge #1


Drapery Study

Something I've been meaning to do for a while. I took these photos today with indoor lighting should have done them earlier when the sun was up but maybe for the next one.

To be done in the medium of your choice, I'm not really sure what else to put
I was inspired by this thread: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/sho...d.php?t=129496 be interesting to see what we do. I guess we can either one or all of the photos, I hope they're ok.

the exercice is very good, but ... the photos are too zoomed in
i think , they should frame the complete drapery to see where the fold begin and hwo the form of the clothe in general no ?

You're right zou, I wasn't too happy with the pictures. I found some more on google, the first is tissue paper, and the rest is a mixture of reference of fabric on the body and a study a guy did in clay, which is very impressive. I hope these are better.

the ref photos are nice to begin with, so , you teel the others , for this week study ?

as crit for your inking:

lines thickness seems all the same (though it has thickness in the middle and thin ends)
but they are clean and nicely drawn

Thanks zou thanks for pm'ing everyone too I've been so hectic this week, doing the commission and sorting a night out for my birthday this Saturday (Even though it's not my birthday til 12th Feb, it's close enough ) so I appreciate the help.
The lines on the caricature were done using the pen tool and a hard, round, wedge brush which even though I thought it would give me random thicknesses seems to give me the same line everytime, but I plan to experiment more with different brushes..do you use pen tool much in Photoshop?

I'm looking for a good "inking" brush. Looks like you have some great line quality there. Are you using one of the default brushes?

You could add shadows to define the forms more I think. Plus clearer cast shadows for all of them as well.

Zou Thanks for the feedback. I did work on it a bit more, added some more highlights and shadows but it doesn't seem to come up very well on my monitor at work (at home and in print there's a better constrast) Thanks for the brush pack too, I can't quite figure out yet how to download, which bit do you click on?

Dizon It's really good to see you back and active in the group Thanks for the comment and crit, I kept it in mind, but as I explained the adjustments I made don't seem to show up very well here, they do in print though. Yes it was a default brush I used..no.36, I think that's called a hard bristle, flat wedge? with the pen pressure on, which meant the line disappeared toward the edges a bit too much sometimes.



Final, Final Mary and the City..with some brightening and shadows (though looking at it here it doesn't look like I've done anything I swear though when it's printed the shadows come out stronger)

My drapery studies for this week, I was finishing the Mary picture so I plan on doing some more tomorrow.

of course it's a matter of taste to have your portrait high key or low key, (high contrast or low) but some of your values are a bit flat
you should have a slight gradation even if a surface appear flat

Thanks zou, it does look so much better The reference was an outdoor picture with not enough shadow, I did paint it darker than the ref but just not enough (my monitor must be set quite dark at home as it looks fine to me there, but on other monitors the values look more bleached out. I think I need to adjust it ). Though I'm still happy with how it turned out.


I'll practice with my next picture. A wonderful couple that I know that I've kept meaning to draw, Mel and Mim...

Great drawing! Especially on the guy. Nice forms and shapes.

The rendering on Amanda's face feels flat. Maybe it's the lighting. Could you post the reference?
