Turbosnail - Thanks dude! I enjoyed the portrait, more on the way.
    Zardon - Will do! thanks
Gogogogogogo - Aw thanks for the diagram explains it really clearly, very useful. It seems they would both get similar results I will read up some more, thanks for the link too - p.s ok to post here, probably the best place anyway.
MoKhi - Cheers muchly - not sure about spelling either, I've had many a debate because the english spelling is technically characature, but all research brings up caricature (as in the latin 'loaded portrait') hmm, I usually go with the most popular so it comes up in searches but I'm very interested in other opinions.
Grandmassssssa! - Hiya and thanks and glad to oblige...

Chow #191 - Junkyard Golem, supposed to have a dog but I didn't read the brief properly and forgot to put him in and then ran out of time when I realised, nevermind (and he was also supposed to be big and strong enough to squish cars but he looks like he's having trouble with that headlamp..hehe oh well!) I enjoyed scribbling this one at work and the cat was fun, I limited my time on PS and just did all the values in pencil before I scanned it. Good process but I had trouble with my graphics tablet, the settings went a bit skew-whiffy so I didn't have pen pressure and the resolution was off..hmm will have to learn more about techy stuff. <goes off to find thread>

Did this weeks Chow. Antlantean Anarchist! Was a good subject, didn't have as much time as I'd hoped (had to go see Avatar 3D bloody brilliant!) and I've overpainted a bit too much of the outline and lost some of the anger in her expression.

Also sketched out some ideas for the CHOW this week. Won't be able to finish for the deadline but I like the mohawk lady design, might work it up. - The one laying down is from ref, the others are from imagination.

I think the c.o.w. creature is great! It's the first creature design I've seen from you. It may be a bit sketchy and not as polished as you'll usually see around the C.O.W, but I think your concept is very successful. It's nice you've put those notes there, they really show your thoughts behind the concept. The design really serves a purpose.

I'm also noticing the caricatures are getting stronger. They seem more realistic. Which is a funny thing to say in this context, but there's credibility to a caricature as well.. right? Keep doing studies every now and then I'd say. Like that fashion study on previous page - some very strong value placement. You can implement that directly.

Love the etchings. I can imagine it takes quite some planning, especially as the result is sort of a 'reverse' of the drawing. Really pans out nicely in some areas. Think the second etch in #229 looks downright frightening though!

Also - 'the firm' is solid gold.

Thanks Anthis for the nice comments. The Betty Page etching does look a bit scary in negative doesn't she! I'm hoping the etching turns out prettier I really enjoyed the COW too, thanks for the confidence boost. Feel like things are coming together now in Photoshop still got along way to go. Cheers again

Here's an update on Aiden. Got to put his mountain bike in there somewhere, was going to put it to his right but might have to change the dimensions of the pic a bit...hmmm

Hey, I went to the art store today and saw some supplies for that solar engraving stuff...wait, actually I think it was photo-sensitive paper...anyways, it made me think of you! How does Mr. Intheuk like his portrait, or have you not shown it to him yet?

Aw it's nice to be thought of all the way across the Atlantic..cheers...solar engraving looked it up, looks interesting. I did GCSE photography back before digital (oh my god a whole technological revolution happened after I left college...Jeez!) and I really enjoyed playing around with the photo paper, might look into it again Liam likes his picture cheers, Aiden hasn't seen his yet, he will at the weekend.

and here he is finished..going to send it off to print now

Hi love. I really like the colors on your Chow 191 and 193. As for the new caricatures I think the drawing is better, but the color feels hesitant to me. I like the thicker, sumptuous kind of handling your used for Cate. With the lines, these ones feel much more like drawings than people.

You do so much work! I should fallow your example better. Keep it up!

Thanks Mokhi I think I do try and go for different styles but your right that I should do another one like Cate. I reckon once the right picture comes along

For now though, just sketching out more ideas for KillBill, finally got round to doing the rest of the gang.

Hi Angel! I'm loving the caricatures. I can see you go for a style similar to guys like Dominic Philibert or Jason Seiler.

Looking at the reference photo of Aiden I think you could have pushed the light and the shadow contrast. The shadow side looks too light, so the contrast is not there. Look at how the strong the light is on the right(our right) side of his face. That's because the shadow side is dark enough for the contrast to show through.

Have you also considered painting over your lines? Some of them are distracting and they don't mesh well with the realistic painting you're doing. Some examples are the lines of his cheeks when he's smiling and the line indicating his adam's apple. Just use color and shade to suggest those parts. The lines for the hair are a bit much as well. A couple of large, well-placed brush strokes should have done the job. Just go for simplification for less important parts and put more focus on your focal point.

    Later!

    Thanks Grandmassa

Thanks muchly Parsakoira! that portrait is lovely, it does look like me totally! and for the new photo, funny expression, might have to have a go at caricaturing you next

Cheers Dizon for the crits and links to follow, those guys are amazingly inspirational. I've heard of schoolism.com and would love to do one of their courses, maybe I'll afford it one day Thanks for the crit, I did do it from 2 pictures and the 2nd one wasn't as much in shadow and looked better so I tried to keep him a bit lighter. I'll keep in mind about the lines I guess some master studies of different styles would benefit me now, I need to try and stick to one style for a while I never know when to go realistic or keep it sketchy, I do kinda wing it a bit too much.

Here's an update on the etchings. Slow progress, I ran out of white spirit so haven't cleaned up all of them yet. Here's marylin before and after cleaning the blackout gunk and masking film off, she still needs polishing.
