James Gurney posted this quote by 19th century artist Arnold Böcklin:
“Nothing in art is created without effort, and the painter’s ideas don’t come to him on wings while he dreams, either. The one may be more talented than the other, of course; but without untiring diligence, single-mindedness and a combative spirit, there can’t be any good result. All this talk about ‘inspiration’ is nonsense.”

Awesome Post. Thx.
I found a link I think would be suitable for this thread: http://www.pluginid.com/sickening-stastics/
Just reading the artice really puts things into perspective
Spirit, thanks for the awesome post. I usually don't go after stuff like this, that shows the negatives but it's a real eye opener
You can sit in here for hours typing to people about motivation, inspiration, hard work and how to be like you *in a good way* but you know what? Unless they get the full meaning, it might inspire them for a couple of days but then they'll go back to searching for more "inspiration"
These people have to believe fully in what their reading and believing because someone else told you to do it is hard, like someone telling you you should believe in god. Why should you do it? Unless you've experienced something or found a reason YOURSELF it's just hard to believe.
Keeping on belief, what the hell is motivation? Nothing more than mental thoughts. You can motivate yourself JUST BY THINKING! "AM SO MOTIVATED AM GONNE BURN THROUGH MY WHOLE SKETCHBOOK” and BELIEVING it. That’s it, that’s all it takes people, for YOU to actually BELIEVE that you’re motivated. When you believe then its truth, no one can stop it from becoming truth; the only person stopping it is yourself. Just like if you believe you’re an artist then you ARE an artist.
Also everyone is talking about hard work, HARD, why do they never think about making it fun? If you have fun you'll want to do more isn't it simple. If you make it all work and no fun then your gonne get bored, you're gonne burn out and you don't want that to happen. So enjoy yourself, make the studies exciting and have fun doing them. Don't forget why you do art, this isn't a job, this is something you do because you love it so keep it that way.
Make it fun and it'll never be hard, you'll only work harder to improve more so you can have more fun .
The moral of the story is, be positive. Is it really that hard? Keep the negative thoughts away, don't tell yourself your unmotivated, tell yourself your pumped, your gonne work your hardest today, tell yourself this is fun and you loving it. Being negative ain't Gonne get you no where but being positive will only help. So why not try it, it can't hurt.
Be positive and believe in yourself and what you do. Set yourself some goals because they always help. Get organized, put your priorties first and just WANT it bad enough to start making a move right now. BUT! most importantly enjoy it, have fun doing it if you have fun you'll want to do more.
Keep the good thoughts up people.

Hi all,sum1 look at my sketchbook pls!!It gets moved around so much no 1 ever views it.Pls leave comments. And this thread rocks!!!
Thanks for this![]()
Thanks for this sticky. Perhaps it should be called "Lack of motivation? Read this first before posting."
I have noticed that moaning posts always get a lot attention. Always. Drawings and sketchbooks don't always get attention. If I get one reply for my drawing and ten for my moaning post, what am I being encouraged to do? Something to think about.
thanks for this thread, i really needed motivation.
This is something I figured would be helpful from a book I've been reading. The Book of Five Rings by Miyamoto Musashi (translated by Stephen F. Kaufman).
Think of art as a lifestyle, and develop a passion for study and learning. Also, remember that everything in your life effects what you want to do, so take pride in your life overall even when it comes to chores or your health. Just have fun and relax, and you will progress! It really is that simple...
The Book of Earth (foundation)
replaced warrior with artist
It must be understood that training is never completed. When the artist thinks that training is over he will find that the "spirit of the thing itself" he has been studying will elude him and fail to provide him with any future revelations. He must never stop training. In this way the spirit of the artist will continue to grow.---------
The Way of the artist is a Way of life and can never be construed as a hobby unless you are seeking only to impress others with your technique. You must never stop studying the written passages of masters relating to the art you have chosen to practice. Nor should you stop studying other arts that the artist studies to broaden his horizons. The heart is essential in helping the intellect to understand the spirit.
If you do not have a map in unfamiliar terrain, how can you hope to get to where you want to go without difficulty? Even if you have directions, you may still have to negotiate roadblocks along the way. Likewise, if you do not set your mind and heart on the required principles, how can you ever hope to understand what it is you are trying to accomplish?
It is important for the warrior to constantly meditate upon these things:
1) Think honestly within yourself in your dealings with all men.
2) Constant training is the only Way to learn.
3) Become familiar with every art you come across.
4) Understand the Way of the disciplines.
5) Know the difference between right and wrong in the matters of men.
6) Strive for inner judgement and an understanding of everything.
7) See that which cannot be seen.
8 ) Overlook nothing, regardless of its insignificance.
9) Do not waste time idling or thinking after you have set your goals.
10) My addition-- Have fun! Can't say it enough. Strive for a working attitude, and just have work be more fun than fun.
Ok, it's a bit much than what I was expecting, but I hope someone got something out of this.![]()

When my daughter was about seven years old, she asked me one day what I did at work. I told her I worked at the college - that my job was to teach people how to draw.
She stared back at me, incredulous, and said, "You mean they forget?"
