Heya
work on intentions rather than rendering or detailing, the last one that you posted, realize that it doesn't really look like it's stand, look more like it's falling to it's left side.

Jeff Lai: For sure, man. Thanks.
andres333: I don't know why I didn't realize that when I was painting it. I flipped it and everything. And you're right, intention should always come first. Thanks, mang.
Self portrait in PS, from life. 35 minutes, or so. Gotta quit being so scared to go lighter with my valuessssss.
EDIT: Hurm, I really dislike this, now. Gonna spend 2+ hours on one, tomorrow.

Yes, you do need to stop being afraid to go lighter with your values. Also, if you used a photo reference it can be good to include it for viewer comparison! I think the nose is too straight at the bottom, and doesn't really transition into the endpart well (if that makes any sense.) The eyes have some awesome shading and realistic looking effects, but seem a little small for the face. The lips are looking good, too. Other then that, I can only say what you already know; lighten up your values.

Constructive Criticism welcomed at My Sketchbook!
Hey man, last self portrait aint bad. it looks like a person
So what i would suggest is doing a drawing first on a layer then lay a midtone( between pure black and pure white) over the entire thing.
Then you need to look at yourself and find the darkest dark and put that in. then put the lightest light in. then you have everything you need to start sculpting stuff. Hopefully it sill help you get over the whole light fear.
keep it up and let me know if you need help![]()
WHERE ARE YOUR STUDIES, MAN?
I wanna see some pen on paper bridgman or plain ol' life drawing from you.
take the following or leave it, i'm no pro so i might be WAY OFF but i think if you can capture form with line you might better be able to capture it with a blob of color smeared onto photoshop. D: draw awayyy
with that said...COOL SKETCHBOOK BRO

Hunchback: Waka waka. Thanks. Trying to use a similar process to the one you posted, in this new one.
a la bapsi: My studies are scattered throughout my house, in various sketchbooks and on various sheets of 8.5x11 printer paper. I just don't have a scanner, and hate taking photos. I do way less digital than traditional work. Thanks for dropping by.
My57: I just don't like uploading stuff. Always feel dumb, cuz everyone else is so much better than me. haha
About 25 minutes in, probably. Need to fix my right eye (oh yeah, this is a self portrait)
I haven't saved any since that second one, or I'd have more to post.
Thanks for checking this stuff out, gangstas.
Good stuff man, the studies are looking better by the update. I just gotta say one thing though: UPDATE! :p
Piemonster: Thanks, brudda.
I haven't drawn a whole lot this year. I didn't do any partying or any of that shit through all of high school, so I kind of started that this year. I've managed to improve considerably, still, but not as much as in previous years. I haven't even had photoshop for a few months, but I'm getting back into painting (still no color shit; ffffu), doing studies (pencil and digital), and all of that shit.
5 minute paint over of something I did a few months ago. Still a lot wrong with it, but it's cool to see my improvement, or something.
Some shitty doodle for no reason.

Trying to update this shiz a lot, now that I'm graduating. Getting into drawing a lot, again. About 45 minutes.
WHY AM I PAINTING AT 5 AM I SHOULD BE SLEEPING
First digital self portrait since that last piece of gawbage I posted. I might have doodled one or two in a sketch book. I don't remember.
Didn't draw as much as I should've, this year. Last year of high school. Started partying. Put ladies and parties before art. Wooooops. Getting back into the groove of drawing a lot, again. Feels nice. Gonna try to save up, 'n hone my skills; see if the safehouse atelier will take me in a year, or so. I'll go from oldest to newest.
Can't remember when this fella was from. Newer than the sp, though. Really shitty. Yipes.
Really unhappy about this guy.
Did this biiiiiitch tonight. Sort of got tired of looking at it after 45 minutes. Values don't read when I look at it as a thumbnail at alllll. And the rendering on the arm looks like fuck. Whatever.
I'm gonna go do some imagination stuff. Weeeeee.
Some shitty doodles/studies. Trying to get used to the tablet again. Fuuuuck. I'm almost 18. Gotta hurry up and get sicknasty, so I don't have to sell coffee to fuckheads.
Oh, butts. I totally forgot to finish drawing that guy's torso. And now it looks awful big.

nice improvement over just a few pages man! I lite what I'm seeing here a lot =D only real crit i have, is that I think you could use what you learn from those studies 'faster'.. apply it to something from your imagination to really gain the core knowledge from your studies![]()
First, get rid of that sober attitude in the first post mate! Your sketches are way better than mine; and you're so young, you could do alotYour sketches show great potential. I like your quick and rough anatomy studies, better than focusing on one study and spending so much time, you've done quite a lot

Don't bother looking at my sketchbook. I haven't updated that thing in years. :/
Nice digitals recently, they are definitely getting better. As you said before if you do a lot of non-digital stuff (particularly sketching) then pleeease post it. Its pretty much a rule of thumb that all great masters throughout history have become famous for their painting, but behind that they are pretty much without exception great draughtsmen. So show us what you can do with a pencil and ink!
Keep up the hard work, you are getting there
Another thing to think about when you are drawing figures from imagination: always be thinking to yourself "Where does the weight lie.. which leg... what arm.. etc" If you are unsure then do the pose yourself to get a better feel for it.

great sb dude...i like the new digital stuff..you might wanna consider changing the thread name...keep it up..
a la bapsi Forp fpfbf. Thanks for dropping by.
Dennis Björk Thanks, man. And it's only a few pages, but it's like... two years, or something. Haha. Not as much improvement as there should have been, definitely. I'm trying to find a healthy balance between studies/imagination, and applying my new knowledge to my work, f'sho.
MiladThaha I've still got a really long way to go, though. Thanks for dropping by.
ThomasM I need to get me a scanner. Haha. And yeah, that's definitely something I'm working on (finding a figure's balance, 'n distributing the weight). Thanks for dropping by.
Boywonda1 Thanks, compadre.
A quicky. Did some imaginative stuff. Might post some of it once I've done more work. Waka waka

solid brew.
i think that last self portrait was a real step in the right direction. keep working on the faces man dont get discouraged by it. I think your drawing is really helping, just keep working on the values to help understand form

Happy Birthday MODAFUCKAAAAAAA!!!
nice ear btw ......
Where are the updates man ? Last one is looking good..but I want to see more !good lines in the last few too
We need to see more studies. Don't worry about super awesome characters and stories. Worry about the basics. When I say basics, I mean BASIC...I'm talking spheres and cubes here. Because what I have seen is an emphasis on value, coloring, and maybe a little fancy contour work but those are not what make a drawing. You HAVE to understand form and how to create the illusion of volume on a 2d surface. To do that, you don't put down value where you think it goes. You need to have an understanding of 3 dimensional planes...where they are, where they shift, etc,.
Your poses aren't as dynamic because you need to study the basics of movement. When one part of the body moves (especially in a fight scene) other parts of the body are going to react. If your character is leaning a certain way, you have to think about where the center of gravity is. What foot is baring the weight...what happens to the hips as a result? In order to know this, you have to work on anatomy. Draw the skeletal and muscular systems. You WILL NOT improve unless you do this. Study real people and how they move. Get a mirror and draw yourself. Don't be detailed, just observe the masses of your body and how they are angled. Perspective is also important here.
I haven't seen an environment yet. I have seen no still life studies. They make you do these things in art school for a reason. I did mention the point of working with basic shapes but you will not always be able to draw characters floating in space. They have to be somewhere and interact with things other than swords. If you ever expect to get paid for your work or do art in a serious capacity you will have to be able to draw more things.
Oh one last thing, drapery. I'm seeing a lot of baggy clothing that look unconvincing. You have to have some indication of how the fabric interacts with the body. Again, this is where studying from life will help you. Get some fabric, throw it on something and draw it.
