    Corner of Tan

Well, sketchbook. 's about time I joined in the fray.

I'm Tan, began my working life as a lightengineer but started drawing about 7 years ago, started gamedesign 4 years ago and have since been trying to make funky things. Most of the oodle McDoodles here will probably be environment things I suppose, though I can't stay away from other things to draw. There's a lot in my head that I want to draw, a lot of stories to tell, and a huge lot of practicing to go to get there. So!

Here we go! Am quite sorry about the initial dump of stuff.

^^^I second that, they have a type of movement and motion about them.

Nice to see your studies of the hand... Picasso continually drew hands from a young age, apparently knowing that they were often considered the weakest part of a portrait...

    ...keep at what your doing.

My advice would to make a clearer focal point in your studies.
For example in the fishfish picture, there's nothing that really pops out.
I also think the lack of contrast somewhat makes it hard to read.

    Just a little hint

Dang you guys. Can't you say Hi?

    Hi. Welcome to the forum!

You really have some good stuff man! I am sure that you are holding out on us though. Aren't there more that you wanted to post. All of those things floating around in your head, will beat you up, if you don't let them out.

I haven't really gotten into this forum, until recently. And, lemme tell you, this is like my haven right now. I come here everyday to check out stuff. Every time I come by, I get inspired and become just that much better. With your talent, I am sure there will be some great things to come. Just be sure, to keep at it. Even, if its just a 5 min sketch. I really believe that you will become extraordinary.

Lovely stuff you got here, I really looked at your environments for several minutes, they are beautiful. Your sketches also promise, that there's more to come so bring it on !
Oh, and welcome to the forum, I myself am new here, isn't it wonderful ? (I think I sound like someone who just joined a sect ... well ... if only sects would be as creative as this place here ...)

Thanks, all of you who commented

I've been trying to get better at focal points, so let's hope that pays off and shows sometimes soon. My digital life's been a bit messy, as life's been busy with my job, with an added bad luck of losing a drive, windows and all the complications that came with it. In the end, the file with the village on it got so corrupted that even as a plain small jpg, I'm unable to continue it without crashing any kind of program. So my apologies.. unfinished, it is.

Having a lot of fun of instinct painting and freeing the hands up. Also tried a speedy inbetween work today when listening to one particular song, not sure if it works at all, but it was fun to try.

These two are maybe a bit too heavy.

edit:: I forgot this one, it's er.. a bit big, sorry.

EEK Tan needs anatomy practise, but I was more on a flow here and concept rather than clean perfection. Either way.. practise Tan, yes yes.

Thanks for stopping by, and the nice welcome!

I really like that spiral tower landscape you have going on here, it has a lot of immersion.

Imagination is not a total internal power but rather it is a reflection and multi-faceted projection of our experiences and knowledge. We take in information from the world around us and intuitively re-order it into something new. Something is not created from nothing but simply transformed from what was before.

Gringo: Thanks a lot! I'll be posting soon again, bit of a problem came up with the last bit of my study.

Ito: Thanks! Though now that I look back on it, I maybe should have made it sharper.

Radost: Hehehe! Yeah, pity it didn't work out completely

    Vayne: Thanks!

Sorry for the lack of updates recently. Been working on a book about alternate reality games for almost a year now, and it's finished. Pity I missed a few vital spots at the exam itself so I had to paste another month of work on it. Coming tuesday I'm having a go again, hope it'll work out. Tan isn't that good with presentation, sadly. And none of it included me drawing, so the whole project was something like learning how to make a glass chandelier without any experience in half a year and then finetune it. Rusty hands at the moment.

I did bumble up this wee thing. Personally I think it's too messy, I need to work on my shapes and rendering, as well as composition and focus. (a lot, in short) But I figured I'd bare my bum and put it in here for developments' sake.

Burn it up if you like, I need to get slapped again, especially now that my hands are rusty but very willing to learn.

Finally graduated with an alternate reality game focussed on playability for anyone and personality switches. Took a break to Sweden after and got sick. Did a lot of sketching after that, was good to have a pencil on paper again after a few months of hardly any time to draw (the book I made for my gamedesign took me 20 hours a day for 6 weeks, urgh). Can't say I made a lot of good stuff, or even very interesting stuff. I still have to scan the hardcopy things, but this is some of the things I did. Still struggling with composition I think. Last two are speedpaints, am determined to become more comfortable with them.

Two week break had.. Mostly doodled on paper but bloody scanner still out of it.

Oh well! Back to the rythem of speeds for a week before I'm off to the UK to work on an archeaological dig.

Not pleased with the progress at all. Got a hunch my own computer screen distorts colours like nothing else. Its not good when grey looks like green, is it? Urgh.. and there's a lot wrong with my colours, composition, anatomy, perspe-- there's stuff wrong with everything. Oh well.. off to make more.

Went to England for a short two weeks to learn how to work and draw on an archaeological site. Was pretty damned awesome! Pity I have to wait till my drawings get published, so nothing to show for that gap in time. Went straight into a few busy weeks working in order to get back to the UK, but managed a few speeds and studies inbetween, so I'm posting some of them for now. Some of these are based on Mikko's colourscheme so forgive me if they are familiar, they are a study after all..

Urgh, I need so much work on composition, scale and desaturated colours..

Nice digital exploration with the peices. Have you tried doing straight up landscape studies? They may help with you lighting even more.
