Please keep in mind that this is *not* the Disney version, and I don't want to see anything even remotely related to it.

We need Two Character Designs for this: her mermaid form, and her maiden form. You may want to do this more as a straight-forward, orthographic design, but you are not required to.

I REALLY want to do another CHOW, as it was just a massive creative surge and a massive confidence boost in all my creative work, but I just can't do it this week... I'm moving back to Cardiff tomorrow and it's pretty much university work until Christmas, so... RAHHHHH!

Aw man.. great topic.. I've always wanted to do a non-disney version, more in keeping with the original folklore tale as told by HCA. Might have to crowbar in some time for this one!

Okay some initial sketches for the mermaid half of her.



Okay and a final sketch/linework based on the small thumb in the middle where she's brushing her hair. Wanted to stick with something in keeping with the tale that wouldn't look a million miles out in an old edition Hans Christian Anderson book. There's also a hint of nouveau border, which is how I intend to link the two images. Now all I gotta do is finish!



Okay.. not a chance in hell I'll finish this for tomorrow, but I am going to finish it. Just about to transfer it to board and watercolour it in a Mucha kind of flat colour style. Had to flip both drawings, which is a pain, but it doesn't look too bad.

This was one of my favorite fairy tales growing up. The look of horror on my friends' faces when I related to them the REAL ending of Ariel's cheery little tale was priceless.

That's a fab sketch Supervlieg! I'd watch where her body joins the tail, the angle is very abrupt.

Although, I'm unlikely to finish this one as I really want to complete Scheherazade first. First roughs: some mermaidy type poses, including one of her clenching her feet in agony, (playing with feet positions here) as we have to do two for this.

Edit: More sketchy madness... Argh... can't stop! The two poses of 'Mermaid' and 'earth bound' Ariel, plus I thought Ariel being taken by the daughters of the air. And also a pin-up mermaid! Bleh...

Love the colours on that sketch supervlieg! turquoise and red/orange is always a great combo.

And Posh, damn you, you're always so quick and bloody good! I like all of them, though the one where she's grabbing her feet is perhaps a tad over dramatic for the elegance of the way the tale describes it originally.. the posture brings to mind a young girl who's scraped her knee rather than the unenviable agony of walking on daggers. I think I prefer the last version of the mermaid. love the subtle melancholy of the thing.

Heck, I can't get Ian McCaigs wonderful sketches out of my head which he did for his storytelling DVDs, retelling this classic Andersen tale with space mermaids...

But I don't think I will actually try this...
