DSG 1401: Monstrous • PERSON'S FACE OPENS TO REVEAL CRAB-LIKE FACE UNDERNEATH

[ Focus on keeping this confined to just the face, and not the entire head. ]

[ The face might open in some hinged, mechanical way, as if the human face was a robotic shell... ]

[ Or it might open in an organic way, as if the human has gone through a process of metamorphosis... ]

[ Or it could be opening in a wounded way, as if the human face has been rent through some act of violence. ]

    [ Etc. ]

Jonish; Hehe, to be honest, the Crab People from South Park were the first to come to my mind.
EBrown; Like the dark mood. On the downside, as you already pointed out, I can't see the creature itself. The 'messiness' does well for the mood, but makes your piece hard to read. Nice to see your creature sort of 'pushing' himself out.
FunnyFace; Nice setting, with the girl about to kiss him, nasty. Like the stretched face, the 'crab' is really popping out. Top of the face looks a little odd to me, with the eyes missing and it seems as if the hair reaches his nose. Nice and odd crab face.
Sudsy; Fun literal take on the subject, with an actual crab 'driving' the person. Nice to see you paid attention to the shape of the head above, with the two halves of the nose visible. The lower part of the face looks a little flat. Perhaps you could have given the face more shape by having the opening edge follow the facial features. Like the cheeks etc, now you can only see where the nose is.

1hr, can't seem to get it right.

Some really nice works in here - Goran, I especially like your take on it.

Originally I was going to give this one a miss because I wasn't overly inspired but I persisted and started scratching paint on the canvas.

goran - Do you use pasted textured or is it all costume brushes? Also, how did you achieve that bumpy texture on the cheek below his right eye (our left)

Deevad and Peg - Which programs where used? PS or Painter?

    Your all very inspiring

NeecHMonkeY-Thank you very much ,nice fast brush action you got there .
Lingmerth- I am using custom brushes and sometimes is cut and paste ,for that texture I used some alpha brushes I found in Zbrush forum just import them in Open Canvas library
(they are PSD format ) and use them in Black and white mode ,they are scans from real face skin. And then litle bit glow brush action and voila.
    Great round guys

Ever eaten lobster with eggs still inside? Well, you shouldn't

Particularly proud of that one, I'm starting to get the hang of computer coloring.

Figured coming out of the mouth would be cooler than just opening the face.

    Crits more than welcome!

Ebrown Kinda cool and moody but I don't really see the crab

Funnyface Loonking good, his face is kinda jar-jar-bink-esque

Sudsy Funny concept, but there's something wrong with the nose, it kinda lacks volume

    Anthis By far my favorite

Lingmerth I love the way you only see a part of the crab's face (BTW, thanks again for the tutorial, it really helped)

Goran Wow, the things tearing his face open are creepy

NeechMonkey Good... and gory. I like the shape of the crab. You might wanna do something about his hand, it looks kinda flat.

Mysterian Terrific, I really love the coloring

J.S. Sebastian Hmn... gross, somewhat in a good way, but gross

Microbe His tiny eyes convey a weird feeling (In a good way, of course). I like the way he is staring at me.

Deevad Cool, makes me think of Admiral Ackbar

Peg Nice, but I would have liked to see more of the crabs limbs (It's just my opinion though)

Tommoy Nice rendering on the flesh... gross. Overall the thing is kinda dark though

Ito Welcome to CA! Hope to see you around on other DSGs . Nice drawing, good detail and lightning.

Figs Haha it's good to see a bit of cartoony in the museum of horrors this thread is becoming

FunnyFace: Nice colours. I think the texture on the skin is a bit much though. Don't forget to add some folds to that skin when it gets peeled back!

Anthis: Good job on the melting skin, it's very convincing. I think the colours & values could be pushed some more; punch up that red!

goran: Very nice drawing, you can import brushes into oC?! Is this the newest version of oC? Anyway, I'm not really seeing a lot of crab, looks like robot.

mysterian: Awesome! Maybe opposite problem as goran. I see a great crab, but not really seeing face/head.

Deevad: Cool, looks like predator! Nice take on the idea. Coming out of an astronaut helmet instead of a human head. I think the planet in the background is a bit distracting. The background is a bit ambiguous, I can't tell if it's out in space or on a planet. If it's in space, it's too bright!

Tommoy: Nice rendering. Very dark though? Can't see much of that awesome crab you did!

I guess my illustration is the bottom one. But I wanted to draw an entire crab, so I did, and included that too.

FinalKnight- he he I was going for craby robot , you are right .Regarding Open Canvas is version 4.6 and I was talking about importing textures in the tone palette and then choosing the tone option in the brush setting palette.
You just did the oposite ,the crab is pulling human face ,cool.

FinalKnight Cool crab but the entry itself is a bit confusing, I can't really get what is happening.

Mohog Love the guy's surprised expression

Brewin Welcome to DSG! Hope you will participate a lot. Your drawing is a bit simple, you could try adding details to the crab's face. In cases like this it's always good to do a bit of research and find crab/lobster/shrimps (Or whatever the theme is) images on the web (Wikipedia and Google image are usually good to find those) and use them as reference, it helps figure how they are made. That's what I do.

Llothcat Great rendering, very convincing. Not very crab-ish though.
