Lowercase brought it up a few days back So I was just going to give my two cents on Blink before we actually discussed it on orientation.

I frankly didn't think the book proved its point very well. It spent way too much time proving the counter point; that snap judgments can be detrimental; instead of providing reasons why snap judgments can be a good thing. I also feel that when it was trying to prove its own point the explanations used were way too long an intricate. One example leads into another, leads into another until eventually you ask yourself how this ties into the books theme.

I get what the author is saying, and honestly I think there is a lot to be said for snap judgments, in the right context that is. Yet sometimes good hard study and thinking is required. I feel he could have organized it a lot better, and certainly made it a lot shorter.

It was an interesting book though, managed to get me thinking. I want to look into all the research done on facial expressions that the book mentioned. If it got Pixar's attention then I definitely want to study it for animation purposes.

Anyway, what did you guys think?

I haven't read the whole book, but this is the first thing that struck me about it. He belabors the point by giving example after example of snap decisions; the art piece, the card game, the married couples, the contents of a house, the graduate test, etc... Although I definately agree that the idea as a whole is an interesting concept.

Another thing I thought about, in regards to peoples ability to make subonscious "snap" decisions, is how we can usually tell if a movie was good or not even if we can't give an exact reason why. For example, by the end of Memento, you probably staggered out of the theater not entirely clear about everything that happened, but you know that it worked; the storytelling mechanics worked, the characters were authentic, it made sense, etc...

That comes to my attention because as art students, I think it's very important to make sure we nail all aspects of production. I'm especially thinking about CA majors and the thesis films, which are very similar to feature films. Studios may also be making "snap" decisions about our work when recruiting, subconsciously picking up on every flaw and inconsistancy.

Derailing the Blink discussion, but if we think ship something that may take a long while to get to Ringling (a few weeks after orientation, let's say), should the package be addressed to the Office of Student Life? Or should we have it delivered to our personal mailboxes (do we have those?)?

I would guess you would want send it to your personal mailbox, since you'll already be in school and have a mailbox assigned by then. Since you don't know your number yet you can just send it to 1130 Greensboro Lane, they'll look you up and sort it to the right box when they get it.

edit: although, now I'm wondering if the mailing address would have changed since they're moving the mail room from the student center to north hall....

    From Ringling.edu:

"You can ship possessions to campus just prior to your arrival for New Student Orientation. All packages will be held at the Fishbowl Information Desk. The Office of Student Life is available to receive packages after August 16, 2009. The School assumes no responsibility for the condition in which the packages arrive. You will need to make arrangements to store your belongings during the summer."

So I guess you can just mail it to The Office of Student Life.

Would that still work three weeks into the semester, though? I would rather not order stuff to be shipped to the Student Center only to have it rejected and sent back whence it came from.

I hope there will be cause it looks like I'm not going this year.

The school needs another $32,000+ (after federal student loans and grants) for the first year and there's no way for us to get that much money (it's more than my family makes in a year). Not to mention we have been denied numerous loans with 4 different co-signers.

I had a feeling this would be the case though, so I'm not surprised. Not to mention that it feels bittersweet to know the only thing stopping me from attending is money. I'm going to try again next year, for now it's time for Plan B!

oh, and I'm keeping the book!

MartinV If you haven't I would try Discover student loans. They approved me without a cosigner. I do have credit history but I'm still just some 21 year old kid to them who's never gotten any big credit items(ie: a car or house) So they must be easier to get approved with. I went with a cosigner even though I was approved without one though, because it lowers your interest rate.

    Thanks berf!

Unfortunately, I was denied by Discover, Wells Fargo, Sallie Mae, Chase, Fifth Third Bank for private student loans and edAmerica, Wells Fargo, Sallie Mae, Chase, Fifth Third Bank for parent PLUS loans. I also tried Wachovia without any success.

Sarasota is a beautiful city, so it's exciting in that regard. Of course it's more exciting in terms of what it implies... school's starting!

Hey guys. I found out I'm able to get into community college okay next month. I was talking with my academic adviser about Ringling and about how to get in with a certain type of degree. I was wondering, should I go for an AA degree or an AS degree in order to get transferred over? Thanks a lot if you know.
