(Removed this mongal sketch as I am testing how the forum is picking up the avatars)
Been a long time but hopefully I can keep track of this and start posting some new things. So lets start with this quick sketch in pastels.

Well I have decided to start painting with real paints more. For a long time its been mainly digital work for clients. Any way to get back in the hang of things and to try and get better I am doing small studies as a first step. Hear is the first one an ear![]()

LIke the ears and all, but I have to say that the nose on your knight seems to be off. I can't explain why , but it seems the nostrils are too small.

Ya the knight was just a quick and dirty sketch. I am sure they are off as I am still trying to memorize anatomy. If I was to make a finished image from it I would base it on reference images like this guy. http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2133/...g?v=1213634234
Any way thought I would post the not so good stuff to haha.
Well then I could undertsnd that, it's just that rendering on the image is pretty good so i assumed it was finished.

Na main thing I was doing is playing around with pastels. I had have not really used them much.
Ok here is another sketch. Still working in gray scale and small simpler subjects to get back in the hang of painting in real media. And sorry about the bad lighting on the photo. I will put in custom lighting in the studio soon.
Any way let me know what you guys/gals think.

I think they are great, your values are looking good and your clearly no stranger to the paints. Looking forward to some more. Are you using oils?
Peace
Thanks DanFor these I am using acrylics. But I am going to start back doing oils now that I did my research on using them solvent free. I do not have a way to get good ventilation in my studio when its over 100 degrees out side. So going to start painting with walnut oil as a medium and brush cleaner. Just picked up today matter of fact

Here is a rough sketch using a loose style that includes the palette knife. Its nothing special but wanted to start doing some loose value sketches and not just the tighter ones.
Also sorry about the bad quality of the photo. I still have not had a chance to put the new lighting in my studio.

Thanks PlisskenJust trying to practice and get better every day.
The avatar is from this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1uwOL4rB-go
nice stuff man!
Here is a new value sketch of a pear.

I did a very quick coloring in photoshop just to see what it would look like. Turned out pretty nice I think![]()

Well finally got back up and going after reinstalling windows. So here is a quick value sketch of a cherry.

Here is a new sketch. This one is done in oils paints with walnut oil as a medium. It was just a very quick sketch/value study to get used to working in oils again.

You are going to get alot of views with that avatar, it's what brought me here.
Now Ive been here though, Ill be back for sure. Im gonna like watching this book, I can tell. Im no art student so forgive my ignorance but that is a fantastic way to learn value, just painting in greyscale, hey.
Great Pat, look forward to more.
Thanks very much jigji. From what I understand in the 19th century a lot of schools had students paint in gray scale before moving on to color. Any way seems like a logical way to do it![]()
Oh and here is a colored version I did real quick in photoshop.

hi
godd start, you're starting with traditional medias. That's great !
i hope i will practice it more, soon
your still life are very good.(the coloring is awesome)
something changed with the cherry, it's smoother. did you smudged with your finger or changed medium ?
for the sphere, i don't know if you placed it over a reflecting surface or not, but shouldn't it have some reflections light in the botton. (unless it's a dark surface underneath it)
keep ont those studies, they are very nice.
Thanks zou.
Not really starting with traditional media just easing my way back into itI have been working as a freelance digital illustrator.
On the cherry I did it very fast and with very few big brush strokes. So its much smoother looking.
The sphere has just a little reflected light but not much. And if our gamma settings are different it would probably not show up at all. Always a problem when showing stuff on computers![]()
And thanks again for the kind words. I hope to have more work up soon.
great. really great.
Here is another one in oils.
