PixelFish: Thanks! There is definitely a long list of things that I need to get around to reading, but I'll take your recommendation as a sign to bump Mr. Banks a bit higher up on that list.


I've got a lot more time for art now and I'm getting more serious about my studies. Here's 10.5 hours worth of 30 second gesture drawings from Posemaniacs. That's 30 minutes a night, 21 consecutive nights, for a total of 1260 figures. I wouldn't say I'm great at it yet, but there is some pretty noticeable improvement between the first and last pages (not that you can make out anything in the earliest pages in this picture).

Here's my entry for COW #273 - FAIRY HUNTER. I finished it weeks ago but I have no idea when voting is going to start on this one.



The second image is an abstract piece that I mashed together and rendered out of several of my older pictures a couple of weeks ago. I find making abstracts like this to be great for clearing my art block, and it gives me some good textures that I could recycle in future digital works. I usually don't post them because I don't usually render them this fully.



I've also been working on a few little programming projects over the past two weeks. A couple of days ago I started working on a simple program to extrude an image in 3D, either based off of its own properties or by using another image as a displacement map. It's a work-in-progress, but I think it might have a few good practical applications in my digital work process, especially with a bit more polish.

Thanks man! It would be a lot work to go through all of those gestures and pick my favourites, but I'll try to get a good scan of the last page in my next update.

As promised, here's a clear picture of the last page of gesture studies. Significantly better than many of the earlier pages, but still nothing special. Figure drawing and drawing with speed are still two of my greatest weaknesses, artistically speaking.

Thanks mundanity! I decided a while back to try and keep one self-portrait on every page of my sketchbook. It seemed like a pretty good way of benchmarking my progress.

I made a program a while back for use primarily as a sort of very minimalistic music visualizer, loosely inspired by wipe transitions and the sort of high-energy, colourful stage lighting used at raves. I've been fiddling around with it some more over the last couple of days and found when scaling it down that I can make some pretty neat animated gifs with it too.
