I hope I'll be able to maintain what's stated in the title (at least artwise ) as this sketchbook grows bigger. And it will certainly grow since my goal is to update it every day with whatever I draw that (except it is some really horrible practice).

This said, let's start with something ooooold (from august and november 2007).

i see you`ve got a grasp on how to render out form and how light affects objects. what you need is to loosen
up the hand and gain more confidence which comes with alot of drawing :]

Mattinian haha, yeah it was about time, Thanks for the reply. I'm aware of that lack of confidence in my lines, been a problem for years for me. And I think every improvement comes with a lot of drawing, it's only up to your brain how fast that improvement comes


So here are some practice sheets from today. Didn't have much time so I made quickies and trying not to draw a line more than once.

Practice from today



I've decided to start with bones and muscles, so here I've studied the male skeleton as in the Loomis figure drawing book




And lastly a not so speedy speed paint, still my best face without reference yet (at least I hope so xD)

I think you should really just keep it up with the studies
I can give you 1 tip which i think could have helped me in the begginging
Really when your studying, just really get into it try to really understand it and break it down for your brain. It's a bit like get lost in it and you'll learn much more quicker
Just keep it up remeber, you just gotta love it

lilnebo thanks! and thanks for the tip, I'll definitly try to go deeper into studying.
Though practice without any reference is just as cruacial since you can spot what you still ahve problems with very easily.


So today I managed to push my production even further, and guess what it's becoming more and more fun every time! I guess I start posting the images in the order they were created for the true progress >: D

First practice (right after I got out of bed)

Then a photo study, I've learnt two things with this one: Don't start picking warm colors right ahead if you are actually aware that the overall color sheme is cold and secondly my values suck when I concentrate on color picking <.<

Hey Kurjuus, nice to see you are studying loomis and anatomy as well. Definitely the key things for you at this point.
Those digi portraits are really good. Definitely your best ones. Take in some facial anatomy it will help a ton with the portraits and definitely continue with loomis and the anatomy books! And yeah life studying is the key for sure.

yousa Heya, thanks for the tip. I'll consider that in the next study, so I rather render it with my own color palette having the anatomy in mind.


Today I thought I just make some studies after all those comments, though I take just a small break from non-referenced work

Firstly something from Loomis



Then a really though photo study, this hab just very little value range and it seems I've failed the to pick the colors more than anything else, I was fed up with that after an hour or D:



after that a self portrait with pencil, yes I'm aware that eyes and ears have errors, but I don't like to use eraser on an 8B pencil, in fact I don't like erasers at all xD



a messy still life in my sisters room (I didn't set up anything )



and a value study from a colored photo. Didn't make it completely right as I noticed after I desaturated the reference, but it's at least better than my coloring.

2 Still Lives






and here I used the advice Yousa gave me, in a different manner though. Instead of jsut looking up the anatomy while studying I decided to anaylize it. So I've drawn the contours and surface of a random head from a photo and layed the skull and muscles on it while constantly looking up reference material. Learnt a bit more again.

Okie dokie. First thing. I know I never used to use erasers and still feel kinda weird using them but the fact is erasers should be your best friend until you are so skilled that you know exactly where to make every line, why you are making it and knowing that it belongs there. Until that day comes you erase everything that isn't right because it will help you improve.

Very nice life studies, good colors and values and shows the form well.
And that last exercise you did look's very nice. When I get to the level I definitely need to be doing those!

i learned alot by just looking at it lol so you must have learned tons doing it.

it explains awesomely awesome how quite everything of the humand body functions, even veins! I found it way more easy to understand than what's in the bridgman book.

Today I've been reading most of the time, so just practice and studies in pencil

here I've tried to draw the previously studied bones from memory already. Had to correct them afterwards though. And it was jsut roughly done

It's hard to make any crits per se, because you're doing everything right and on the right track. You're studying your foundations, bone knowledge is essential to be excellent at anatomy.

Don't forget to throw in gestures inbetween, though, to keep practicing your line and make it fluid. That'll also help you to keep your figures flexible, because studying bones and muscles all the time might make your figures stiff eventually, because these studies are quite static by nature.

AsaB hey, thank you. Glad to hear that. I consider to throw in some gestures here and there though I don't really want to focus on them yet. Otherwise that's a good point about the stiffness. I've noticed it myself that I find it quite hard to make lively and fluid poses so I think I shall give them a couple of more room in my work.

The anatomy studies are on their way! make sure to study the relations between bones/muscles, and not just singling out each form. Also, keep your eye on proportions, keep checking the lines you're making in relation to the whole drawing, use negative and abstract shapes as guides!
keep it up, the fruit studies are awesome!

very interesting to see all your bone studies! i'm trying to learn the body by a more geometric approach at the moment. i can't even imagine to memorize all those bones and their names

Ok ok, lemme help you out here
Your starting great with the bones, but really rendering them and spending alot of time on them would porbably only help your lines, form and render which is good but if we're talking anatomy then its all made easy.
Really unless you wanna be the bone master the dude who draws bones all the time just draw a full skeleton and study how the bones move in that skeleton.
For example the knee bends backword and forward, the arms bend way, the torso does alot of movment. Just do studies of a full skeleton and move the body parts, you can look at how your own body moves and just do the same to the skeleton.
After that start seeing where the muscles go on top of the skeleton and which bones stand out like the back of the elbow and which bones are anchors for the muscles, like the collar bone, pelvis, ribcage etc.
Oh and remeber to do drawings from mind, trust ME you will suffer if you don't try to put everything you learned into full drawings of the body from mind.
