I actually do agree with you. It was specified by the client that the Akraa was a 4 legged spider-like creature made of wood. To become more "impressive" looking it has the ability to stand on those hind legs and attack with the blades on his front legs.

Things are going well, thank you for asking man. Industrial grade nightmares, haha- awesome.

Here's something else to show. Gotta big one to show next week... excited about it. Gotta few working now that aren't under NDA, I guess I could post progress on those, too.

    Hi matey

I like him, hes is rather good looking, but if I was to nit-pick at anything it would be the angle of his axe blade it should be turned away a bit more, I think the cutting edge should be in line with the front of his fist, it just feels more natural that way.

What do you think? Its not serious its a small nit picky farty thing, and I could even just be talking out of my hat.

all the very best to you my mate.

I do agree with you. I hate being that jerk who doesn't go back to fix his art anymore, but I gotta keep my eyes forward right now. But here's that one I was excited to show. Thanks for looking man, I really do appreciate it. I'll try to get around to fixing these things one day, but hopefully I'll keep things like that in mind for future paintings.

Lightship- A sense of urgency? Haha, while I'm replying to stuff now I tend to have to keep my typing down to a minimum. I'm writing so many e-mails now that I don't really have a ton of forum time before I have to begin doing whatever I have to do. Usually I'm one of those guys who wakes up in the morning and jumps on what I have to do, but I'm finding that I'm a lot more reluctant to get started sometimes, and I think that it's just me adapting to more free time.

I work best in four hour sessions, two or three a day. During these breaks I also used to be on here a lot, but I find it's working best if I just don't look at my screen at all during the 1 to 2 hours I'm taking a break. Maybe I should start picking up the old George R.R. Martin books and giving those a finish... or heaven forbid do some traditional sketching.

Ok, see and now I'm gonna try and end this abruptly. Haha, thanks for stopping by lightship- you're the man. I'll repay the favor, I swears it.

Alrap- thanks you, I appreciate it.

Figured I'd show some sketches and stuff.

The first 3 are created from the same basic pose. The client trusted me to try and change them up a bit, as a way of being efficient with them. I think it worked out alright, they're definitely different looking.

And the rest should just kinda go as I uploaded them. Not gonna explain 'em all...

EDIT: OH yeah. The photo are of my good buddy, Daniel Wood. He made that armor himself, and I thought I'd use the opportunity to shoot some references. I was thinking about putting them up for other people to use (I took a lot of pictures while we were there) but I kind of want to see if he's cool with it first. These are the ones shot specifically for that last project (Chapter 13), but I shot a lot while we had the time.

Great stuff, the thumbnails have great energy. Try to check those from time to time when doing the picture to keep it still flowing as good as possible.

Thanks Ramalooke- I think the weapon is just going to have to work like that. Apparently those kinds of swords you needed help getting of your back anyway.

Vablo- Yeah I have over-rendering issues. I agree with you I need to be checking back evry now and then.

Thanks Lightship! I appreciate it and Happy New Year to you as well.

I got myself back to work now and did some sketches I can't show yet.

But I also decided to do a figure study, which I can show. I'm not sure if I'll finish it, but I feel like I get so much from them. Even though this guy had really weird proportions and doesn't look like that at all in the face.

    Ok, 4 AM must sleep....

Oh goody. So I can show these.

It's for Sticks, a digital horror card game. I wish more people would hire me to do work like this.

Here are the finished ones. All images in this post are:

And the randomly thrown in sketches. I'm not going to be organized here, I've got a deadline, sorry.

EDIT: the last one didn't get squished, we were playing with cropping and making sure it all turned out right.

EDIT AGAIN: Found two more WIPs, so it's not the last one anymore. I don't think anyone looks at this except Lightship (yes, my fault, no posts).

You've got some kickass designs and strong draftsmanship. The one crit I'd suggest is that your work would go to another level with just a bit more careful control of your values.

Your shadows especially are tending towards being inconsistent and patchy but consistently too dark; if you organized and controlled your values, this issue would disappear pretty much instantly.

Also, your work is consistently lacking in cast-shadows, which takes away from the potential 3-dimensionality you could be achieving. Convincing cast-shadows pretty much require strict value control, but acquire it, and they'll almost paint themselves.

I'd recommend making a palette of 5 grayscale values - a highlight, two midtones, a shadow, and a dark accent for ambient occlusions, and just paint with these. Blend them into each other when you need a gradient or a soft edge, but always know where every value in your painting falls on this scale.

If you search posts by user gregpro on this forum, he did a bunch of tutorial paintovers, and this was one of the main techniques he recommended.

Here's one of the most relevant ones:

Sorry if this is overly preachy; I tend to nerd out about about value control.

    Anyway, great work.

Loving the new posts matey especially the environment studies, but what Kind of a school takes kids to a graveyard on a school trip!! (are you ready for the punchline ............ here it comes ..........) I mean its DEAD BORING!! but at least its in the DEAD center of town, and I bet everyone was DYING to get home.

Ok milked that gag to death now (oops! another one sneaked out). The lighting in the Image with the long dry stone wall is totally brilliant mate, I really like that one, the creature study is rather good too.

Again I'm impressed, well done you have raised the bar yet again my mate, all the best and keep it coming bud.

Lightship- thanks for stopping by. I'll repay the favor, I swears it.

Yor- Thanks man. I think they're done, but maybe I'll feel like working on them some more... I did fix some stuff on the last one with the shaft of sunlight, but I haven't fixed it just yet on the forum.

Uh oh. What do we have here? I can't quite say. It's for the Ascendant graphic novel and this is Torian. That's all I'm going to say at the moment, other than he enjoys long walks on the beach and macaroni sculptures.

Either I cannot see how he holds the sword or it really is a rather strange way.

    Whatever,...
    great sketches. Looks really lively.
    Keep it up.

Indeed it is, sir. The outfits that traditional german fencers wore was designed to confuse opponents and mask the movements of your arm. This is a pain in the ass when painting, so it's likely I'm wrong in there somewhere.

The way he's holding the sword is very unusual, and is a parry move. It's sort of "in the middle" of the action, which isn't necessarily the best way to show it (but sadly the only way in this case). Look at this video, at about 1:22 in and you'll see what I was going for. But you're right, it's very unusual. There were also a lot of variables involved with what exactly he would be doing at that moment, and it's all very confused because the Kwan-Dao is likely not something they would have been fighting against, so again- I probably did screw something up, but hopefully that should clarify a little more.

Sometimes you get asked to do things you know won't look right, but you gotta try anyway.

Well you definitely draw a whole lot of dudes with weapon^^
You seem to have pretty solid knowledge in every department but your color sense is lacking behind a little.
While this isn't always the case your colors often are a tad muddy. You keep the hue very monotone throughout all the values and that flattens paintings hardcore. I'm guessing you're using overlay to colorize but you still need to put some effort into it in order to not make it too uniform.
I'll take the painting from March 3rd as an example, I hope you don't mind.

Solid images as always Quig! I can see improvement in your anatomy and structure. Just keep thinking about everything you draw and paint as very simple forms. Keep it up!
