Hey, everyone. I'm generally pretty happy with my nose in a sketchbook, and spend a nice bit of time there, but since the end of highschool, I don't really get any feedback on anything I draw in it. I'm now halfway through college and a bit frustrated at the lack of ability [and sketchbook crits] I run into when I go to render scenes from my head. So! Any comments and crits are welcome.
To start it off, here are some recent studies, with stupid doodle auras.


This is part self portrait and part skull study. It's still unfinished. More updates on that later.


A quick sketch I did of one of my friends in an attempt to draw from life more often.

I'm not sure the perspective is correct, but that self portrait skull thing is coming along... nice work so far.

Hokay. This is about as finished as this is going to get, spare a few details.



blenditall: Thanks! Some angles look a bit weird to me too. Most of all the angle that the nose and the nose bone comes out of the skull at in relation to the angle that the cranium has been cut. I'm not sure about it though. It may just look strange.

I did a bit of figure painting to help pull myself out of the minor slump from earlier this week. One's pretty assy. The other a bit less so. The second was done from a photo by mjranum stock . He has some good references and such for anyone looking for some fun stuff to draw or paint by the way. The other was done from a photo from female-anatomy-for-artist.com

I don't have too much history doing any figure painting at all but I do find myself doing that more than most other projects and in longer doses. More likely on the way.

The two figures you did digitally are lookin' pretty good, especially your second one. Watch the left shoulder of the first one. It looks like it's a bit too far forward in her direction.

Also, If you haven't checked out posemaniacs yet, you definitely should because it's a great resource if you wanna do some more figure drawing.

BadGeometry->Thanks for pointing that out. I ran into a bunch of problems while I was trying to sketch her. Posemaniacs is good fun! I don't have any paintings like you do but I did do a bunch of sketches. There are some wacked out camera angles in there.

Two more 90 minute studies today. One with lots of clothing, and one without. I need work on both, so it seemed like a good idea. Anyways.

brentos8: Haha. I'm trying to take some life drawing classes when I can so I can get actual live models to work from but right now I can't. Unless I do an Alex Grey and start painting and drawing myself nude. I definately agree though. I notice it easily when I'm working through classes.

Two more 90min studies again. Today was a slow day in the land of figure painting so they're a bit busted. mjranum stocks used for both.

Apologies for the lack of updates. I got a bit frustrated about this fabric stuff and let it go for a few days. Here are the few I did though. Any tips on fabric would be magnificent!

90min study from a picture by lisajen stock .

Started as a 90min then turned long pose and eventually died to frustrations. Also a lisajen stock .

60 min study. Done from a photo but right now I completely forget by who. Will update that when I find their page.


Currently I'm working on a personal project which will probably be posted in the Crit Center in a couple weeks.

I've been working through these since the last week of August and taking my time, too. I'm trying to find a middle ground between the diagramatic drawings from anatomy books and a real world use for them in situations where an understanding is really required to work through obstacles such as foreshortening and differing body types, etc. The original versions with skin are out of Sarah Simblet's anatomy for the artist.
The last two are unfinished but will be finished soon I swear!






This last one I'm also going to be etching and printing. More details on that later!

So! I finished the drawing I decided to use for a print.



I scratched that into the ground and realized that there was a nice bit of extra space on the plate. After messing around with some ideas, I came up with this.



I etched it everything into the plate and started cranking out test prints. I'm planning on aquatinting the background to a dark grey color and lightening up the figures a bit.



This is the cleanest of the bunch. The scanner was a bit to small for the print by about half an inch on the bottom and right side so a bit got hacked off. Apologies. Anyways, here's a detail for those interested.

Got a few more test prints out today after toning my background in with a rosin aquatint along with a little spray paint aquatint.

I'm starting a self portrait piece. After a doing a few sketches, half a failed bunch D: I settled on this one.



I'm leaving the hair unfinished on the sketch right now. The experience I have with my hair generally tends to be one of abstract experimentation no matter how many times I render it.
It's large and curly.
Bush like even.
Harboring denizens of my imagination.
When I get to it on the plate, I'll be doing it directly on the plate without the help of drawings.
So, here's a proof of the plate so far.



I'm using burnishing and scraping over a triple aquatint for this instead of line work.
Any comments are apprecitated!

I got my self portrait to a much more finished level. It could still use a bit of tweaking but, for the most part, it's pretty finished.



Hopefully I'll have some more stuff quicker than these have been going.

Just to mess around in Painter again, I did an Andrew Jones style portrait. Might I say, the workflow is freakin' sweet! Even though it's grossly incomplete and still pretty rough, this is probably the fastest I've gotten something whole looking done in 3-4 hours digitally.

Here's what I've been up to in the land of figure studies->





I'm trying to show the inner layers of muscle while still showing most of the outer layers as well. I have an 18 x 24 version of the standing male figure that I'll be etching I think. More on that later. I've also been trying to do more drawings from life.





I also bought myself a small sketchbook for quick life drawings. Mostly portraiture and retarded doodles thus far though.




For the record, the first and last pen drawings do have the likeness of Tom Warbuton in them from when he did a presentation at our school! =)
The man's amazing.

Hey, everybody. I resurrected my Hogarth book and started doing some stuff from there. Mostly head studies with a few chest studies around the edges. I think I need to get better at finding the large forms and being able to render them in space.
I've also been keeping up with some pen portraits over lunch.

I've been a bit busy with outside stuff lately but I have managed to get a bit of work done on a couple prints. Mainly on the smaller of the two. It's not done yet, but most of the tedious crap work is out of the way I think. =D

Here's the first proof fresh out of the acid.


2nd proof-> Started adding in a background with some ball ground and newspaper. Got some bubbles from the acid though. Hopefully not a big deal.



I'm going to go back and try to darken the background with a bit of aquatinting but for now, this is the result.

I haven't had much time for sketches but hopefully soon!

This is the finished black and white version of this print. I added a second aquatint to the background to make it a bit darker and to give the figure a bit more glow. Hopefully later I will be able to make a few color prints of this but for now, it is what it is. =D

that last experiment is really cool!

you wanted crits.. hm.. perhaps try and work on the lines, try to draw with much lower pressure at first to really find your line, and then make your line, in one move, so you can avoid the "shaky" feeling.. does that make any sense? i hope so!

notic -> Thanks! I'll keep thinking about that in future sketches. I think I have a natural tendency to get myself into a scribbling fury!

Here are some more studies and doodles. I kept up with the head construction a bit so a lot of them have to do with that and started trying to create some faces from my mind. Most of these are from the later half of December.

Also did a couple of self-portraits which are both unfinished.
This, by the way, is the best way to dodge a bridal shower taking place in your house.

Been gettin' busy in the traditional realm of art but I did start this to try and make the flow of work in my digital stuff more like the flow of work in my traditional stuff. Basically for this, I made tons of layers at 30% opacity and worked that way. Let me know what you think!

Hey, guys. In the spirit of being done with midterms, I cranked out a quick self portrait today in Painter while thinking about some of the things my painting prof said to me during crits. Grayscaled and then color overlay and multi layers in 1.5 hours.

Also been doing some quick pen portraits during lunch and dinner which I'll get throw up as soon as I get my lazy ass over to the library to mooch their scanners. D=
