Looking very cool in this here sketchbook! Liking the mech designs... I wonder if they might feel stronger for just a hint at real world mechanics (maybe just in the joints... a hint at a real life mechanism would be cool). Really liking your brush work in the study at the top too.. though the skintone feels quite rubbery... not sure whether it's the colour you picked or the fact the shadows seem quite desaturated. Not sure what the ref was (though it feels familiar) but might be worth improvising with some more saturated hues of the same tone would bring it to life, so to speak!

The character work on the previous page is lovely though, really like the image of the guy with his back to us, and the dark skinned chica in yellow.. both have quite different feels, but lots of character

    Thanks man
Well i kinda wanted to stay in "gray" tones as much as possible.
I made this second version to push lighter tones more, to pop it out a bit

that guy before was kind of heading in the right direction when he was talking about saturation, or chroma, in your head study

im not sure what you mean about wanting to stay in grey tones, but if your going for a desaturated feel in your painting you should be consistent. you have really warm shadows (like the brown to the left of his forehead) and some really warm lights (the cheek on the right looks like a fluorescent pink) but youve made the midtones (forehead, all around the face etc...) almost grey in comparison. and then there are cold (almost blue) patches of colour on the chin and a strange green in the cast shadow of the nose

also as a whole i would try to simplify the painting process as much as you can and avoid making unnecessary marks. naturalistic painting for me is about understanding where to focus your time, starting off with big brushstrokes, establishing broad planes and then breaking them down more wherever you want to lead the eye. some parts like the ear and below the chin look a bit too fiddly and arent as convincing as the face

i really love your thumbnails by the way especially this middle one...

    Your mechs are quite badass!

I'm liking this sketchbook and your hard work!

I could give a critique similar to the one before me.

When painting and designing mechs, think about functionality too. The joints are the critical points when it comes to mechanical walker things. And on that 4-legged mech with the huge cannon, I'd make it's legs much more bulky and stronger. When I'm looking at it, it looks a little off-balance and could fall over any minute due to that massive weapon and it's weight. But really, these are just nit-pickings.

And that face study: human skin has incredibly little differences between tones. When I paint the transition tones, I usually go for a soft brush and use very light strokes. Raising the brush size also helps me a lot with this task.

All in all, congrats and keep up the great work!

Oh man, I love the way you paint figures and portraits. There's great confidence in your strokes.

Mechas are tasty as hell as well.

And 72 pages?! This is just epic.

I really enjoy your subtlety in your linework. Are you using just the basic round?

Either way keep up the good work M.

    HAHAHA Yeah, for sure.

Anyway, these new characters are an interesting, almost polar opposite direction from what you normally do. I can't wait to see what you do with them

It's inspiring really to see that you can make such readable figures with such simple lines...

Really like the simplicity and almost abstractness of those last few character designs. The experimentation of color and values show a nice subtlety in the play of forms. I prefer looking sometimes at rough designs such as those because it leaves more room for artists like myself to be inspired, or draw ideas, because the pieces is essentially very unfinished, but it grasps the whole idea of conceptual artwork. So good job on that won!
