Opey the Warhead Issue 5

First of all, I hope I'm not annoying anyone by posting all these Opey pages here in the finished section. I'm not certain about the quality of my work, so I don't know if I should be posting it here, let alone so frequently. I almost feel that the CA powers will take one look at my less-than-exemplary work and will come down on me at any second. I may post more if it's acceptable (although I'll put some time between each posting).

The following pages are the first ones from my comic, "Opey the Warhead". I'm mulling over sending them to some small press publishers but I just don't know if they can stand on their own two feet.

If anybody would like to comment on the storytelling, artwork, or whether it's even worth submitting, I would be extremely grateful.

I like it. The storytelling and mood does seem to veer between dark and light, particularly with the fathers little flashback, but the humour is entertaining and there's a real "classic" cartoon feel to it. Like newspaper strips, or even old Disney comics, with a fairly pleasing twist towards the contemporary. I'ld say you have a fair chance of getting published - although even a fair chance might be small. That's the industry for ya, I guess.

It seems well written, you'll probably want a lot more either done or at very least outlined. The artwork looks good, I think the inky black and white style works. Colour may even be wrong for this kind of work. Keep on posting, I'm sure the "powers that be" won't smash you anytime soon. Update in one thread though, perhaps.

anywho, i think it's really good. i like your style- it has a classic feel to it. the frame of the dad with the black eye is very confusing to me as i don't know what's going on in it. other than that it's very good.

Great stuff, bud. I love the black/white/gray style, and I think that you have a lot of great contrast between the darks and lights that really make some of the art jump off the page. And I love the guy with the pipe's facial expressions.

First off, I'll say that this sort of comic isn't in the usual style I read, but I'm envious that you've gone ahead and done this all yourself so there's noway I could just pass through.

I really like the story and to me that's most important. I may hold off showing exactly who his mom is if it's going to be much more important later on. Personally I thought some sort of B52 bomber was going to be his mom, but it's obviously in a retro future sort of setting so they wouldn't have those.

My biggest crit is the shot flow. Sometimes the angles are a little weird and overall I don't feel as connected to the interior space as I'd like. The storytelling and emotions are coming across (most important says I). Like the panel with the dad making the breast gesture talking about the mom. I know you really want to show that off, but there's a 180 flip there on the camera and it can be a little confusing, you may not have needed the kid in there at all at that moment (his speech bubble of protest may be enough)

The first time we see the mom, the camera bounces from one side to another and I get lost as to where in the kitchen I am and where everyone is moving. Still, it's an entertaining story and I think if you keep clarity in mind as you move forward it's going to get better and better. Nice work! Welcome to Concept Art!

I love the last page, with Opey in the rain, the fact you dedicate a whole page to it, just emphasizes the crushing emotion that Opey is feeling.

I think you have a very compelling story here, which is strange, funny, and moving, touching on serious themes of being "odd man out", rejection, and alienation. You have created the quirky mood of this beautifully in both story and artwork. I feel you should be congratulated for this, and I'm really keen to know what happens next in the story (which is surely one of the desired aims?).

If you check out not only the number of posts, but the number of views, you will see that there are a lot of people following along with interest

I think it may just be that lots want to see where the story is going, don't want to interrupt or put you off in any way, as you look like you have a very clear idea what you are about.

Personally, I'm enjoying this greatly, and am fascinated to see where you will be taking us with this quirky tale. Please be encouraged, and keep up the good work.

Once more, I want to say I'm truly appreciative of the comments I've gotten here on ConceptArt. I'm still amazed the Concept Art heads haven't tossed my comic pages out of the "Finally Finished" section. I look at all the professionals here on ConceptArt and their high grade artwork and I wonder why I'm here. I do know I love to draw, though, if that has any meaning.
