when i saw this in real life, i was blown away, and it still does.
your rendering is on the money, and i love how the white comes out on that color paper. my only real problem is the sword in the 2nd to last piece is kinda off-perspective.
otherwise, its amazing. post more mang.

Some stuff i've been doing for a concept class i've been taking, just working on composition ideas (lots of stuff on thirds) and trying to keep it "readable." Comments and crits are welcome, i'm really starting to feel like i'm drawing the same thing OVER AND OVER....... PS these are no more than 15-20 minutes each so be gentle![]()
pretty much autopilot art~* If anyone has any suggestions on how they "mix it up" i'd like to hear them. thanks.![]()

pencil and chalk drawings on the toned paper are excellent, I'd liek to see more of those. the digital stuff is getting there, but isn't as well developed. try starting with pencils, see if that feels better.

I WILL BE UPDATING WEEKLY..... even if only my friends see it![]()
bwkeough the digital ones are only 15-20 minutes but yeah clearly they aren't up to where i'd like them to be.
bohemian Thanx I'd like to work more on my digital stuff, I feel like i don't really have a good grasp of how I want to do things yet in PS or Painter.
Heres some stuff i've been working on FINALLY.... I swear my scanner is bi-polar.
No I am not a furry, its a courageous cat MAN.
Couple hours of coloring, not sure i'm i'm going to finish it.
Scottish whipslinger man.
Same deal w/coloring, probably should just go for it and finish it
Sketch I did for a maquette in Traditional Animation class......
Looks like Skeletor to me i dunno
I'm not sure what this is
This is my israeli friend eyal.... as a wizard
And one of Ringling's finest construction workers.
I would love some comments and crits ESPECIALLY, i'm really trying to get back into sketching now that animation school is done for the summer.
tnx![]()
the maquatte one has a nice slick pose, and your lsdabstractedshapeswork well with it
Was playing w/ some stuff that I had kicking around, JUST trying to get up to date since I post like...... bi-annually. Comments and crits. i would love, theres nothing more motivating than good crits. tnX.![]()
Some more from the dirty paper sketch book, this is 2 pages actually
I ended up using that one drawing for a digital piece
30 minute portraits of some friends
This is a texture map my friend Eyal was working on and I took a swat at fixing it up.
Thanx as always.
Just more drawings, the first one is just some using colored pencil in my toned sketchbook and the other is from the Connecticut sketch group which is currently the most motivating thing ever.
TNX

Great rendering! Your handling of colored pencil on the toned paper makes things pop especially.![]()
Hey Joel!, You have this great sense of dynamic shape as it progresses in space. The abstract shapes melding with the more formal are interesting as well. If you don't mind a crit, to get that 'toony' side of things together...really check out how the expression of the character and the posture of the character interact with one another. They have so much influence on how the character hits the viewer. Ubiquitous example (Scar from the Lion King) he's not the happy go lucky sort, he's slimy, underhanded, and more like a criminal genius. So the shapes used to portray him reflect that sensibilty and his very movements are influenced by that as well. Just something to keep in mind when you construct a character...what are their motivations and how do they interact with others. That sort of thing....ok i'll put my philosopher's hat away.
Other than that...keep posting man...would like to see more.
Cheers!
I enjoy looking at the sketches on the toned paperman , i got to try that out once again
keep it up...interesting stuff

Joel--
Your pencil stuff is spot on. You've got great energy and movement in your stuff, and a solid sense of design showing through. For some reason that flow really starts to get lost in your color stuff, almost like you're moving on to a whole different rendering style when you bring color in the mix. I'll need to see more to further my observation, so post up, punk!!

rsnurkle I really love the toned paper too, i'm kinda tryin to stick my foot in everything unfortunately and find little time to work in it, but I WILL SOON.
Helzon I struggle a lot with the emotion in my piece, in face I usually say at the end of a drawing wtf is this guy thinking. And its cuz he's not, so I plan on changing this, focusing on a characters motivation (even if it is for a turnaround.)
corky13 Yes do THE TONED book make sure you use prismacolor or else your doomed.
bdfoster Yeah, I'm not so good w/ the color..... The first set up there are 15-20 minutes max, their just quick thumbs but regardless I just don't have a good feel for it, and its sad i've been using photoshop for like 8 years, further observation on wed. if your comin. I would really appreciate it.
Here's some stuff from the past week or so
Screenshots from an animatic I did about a month ago.
Quick sketch of a fishy with a mohawk.
Very disappointed by the creatures in Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, my shot at a Skeleton Champion....
I have a ton more stuff in the next few days i'm going to put up, thank you again for the comments I can't tell you guys how helpful it is to have constructive feedback from people I respect~*

this1 thanx I hope to stay updated at least all summer, always appreciate the comments.
I feel like i've just "missed" a bunch of things from either my sketchbook or quick digital since I started this SB thread, but I hope to take care of this. Some recent quicker sketches from the past couple weeks.
It's supposed to be a shield.......I KNOW its not a boat
Submitted for the DSG 1040: Fantasy: A HUGE MONSTER WITH A VILLAGE BUILT ON IT'S BACK, took about 2 hours, still pretty sketchy.
Thanx again~*

this1 You're too kind, i'm finally starting to play w/ perspective (both regular and atmospheric) to show a sense of graphic mass, I kick myself for not employing it earlier. I hope from now on its something I think about in every character sketch I do~*
Playing w/ a dragon I modeled for school, just playing w/ a bunch of shaders and stuff like that, thought this glass one AS CLICHE as it is turned out pretty cool~*
The original turned out fine I guess, considering this was like my 3rd poly model, and I took a stab at specular, bump, and displacement maps too.
Comments and crits are welcome![]()

Hey Joel,
Great update on the 'organic prison'. The funny thing being on some of them there is a really strong sense of abstraction, whereas in others you have them pretty coherent and tightened up. It kinda feels like you're moving in two directions at the same time. It's all good though. Looking forward to another update man. Cheers!
Helzon I don't call it my ADD sketchbook for nothin! One of my biggest issues is that I spread myself waaaay to thin, trying to keep my sketchbook, keep up w/ animation, working in digital, doing the advertising graphic design stuff, web sites, 3-d modeling/texturing....... I'm never going to be good at anything if I keep trying to be mediocre at everything. I think I have to choose essentially which direction I go to. Which i'm guessing will be after college~* Thanx for the comment and thanx soooo much for the help on the mobile prison guy, i'll have a couple topics picked out for this wednesday to keep us busy (maybe somebody else will join in?!)![]()
Here's a couple sketches of a minotaur, the one w/ the landscape I eventually would like to make digital, sketches are still pretty sketchy but its WIP
ended up being 2 pages in the SB, sorry for the break in the middle
COMMENTS AND CRITS would be fantastic!!@$%

man i dig how you are putting value in your sketches as shapes. It seems you are getting a little more liberal with your use of the pencil i would recommend more loosening up. out of the box if you will....."walking prison"? KIcks MOTHER LOADS of butt. as does the one below it. wuestion....are you getting those whites with an eraser or are you leaning a little on PS? keep it coming....once precollege simmers down i will have a chance to do some scanning....but not now...i will try to keep it touch.later
-VELKer
great to see you updating this skeet, joel. Not much to say that i havent said in person, other than it keeps lookin better each time i see it. My only gripe: FINISH THE GODDAMNED PIECES. You've got fucktons of these epic sketches and so few of them you've actually turned into finished works. After you finish your gnoll/catguy, get crackin' on that Frazetta-esque minotaur. See you at the sketchgroup.
