    Hey!

    Tnx

I'm just wondering: now I posted the final result, do you still think the same about the blurry stuff?
Because I think myself it's not that bad now , but I understand what you mean.
I 'built' this the same way as I would do in a traditional painting, maybe that's why I painted with low opacity.

    Brushes used (in different sizes ofcourse ) ;

    Hi!
That's funny that we posted at the same time

    I think it's a lot better now
It's still visible on some parts (like the hair and mouth) but a lot better haha
I think you just have to get used to painting digitally, which probably requires a different technique/ approach than your traditional work.
Also maybe it is an idea to try some different approaches with the traditional stuff as well? Because you usually work very safe, with lots of transparant layers over each other (am i right? ), and it might be fun to work with some thick non-transparant paint sometime, just to try out.
Check out Aart-Jan's sketchbook (a classmate of mine), he has some cool out-of-the-box stuff which I'm jealous of haha ^_^

Love, hope to see you soon.
    Marleen.

    Thanks ^^

Yes, I work safe, but I've also tried different techniques which I posted in previous pages (although that's not only with paint). And I don't know if i already have said it to you some time, but I really hate the approach of working most artstudents learn from their teachers . And as you can see in work that I made when I was attending the academy, I tried several things like thick paint and stuff, but I reaaaaallly hate it .
Van Gogh style was something I actually wanted to try this week... but then I got my wacom and decided that I have until september next year to try that, ghehe

I'm now going to take Noë's advice and paint the first layers of my next portrait with 100% opacity.

Hi there, lovely sketchbook! Your portrait studies on the last page are just lovely and motivating; that's just the sort of thing I should be doing.

For your digital painting, you don't need to use 100%, but the general tip most digital artists give is that you should work with as high of opacity and as large of a brush as you can manage at that time. As you continue through the piece, you will need a smaller brush to work in your details and you will need to lower your opacity to blend where necessary, but don't get too small or too transparent too early. Also try to use the hard round brush for most of the image. That soft round brush you've got shouldn't be used until the latest stages of the work when/if you want to smooth some jarring tonal transitions. These general rules should help you be a bit more painterly with your approach but also will help you be more efficient in your process.

    Keep up the good work!

heix33: I used a russian academic drawing book I've got from someone. I don't know the title, but I guess you can find also plenty of english academic drawing books .
dierat: Dankje! That helps a lot!

I've set myself a goal, to learn and understand working with photoshop and my tablet.
Right now, I'm working on a portrait of an elf from ref. I'm in the 8th layer now and just started blending the face. I think I finish this one today and start a portrait of me and my best friend (which is harder imo because I know our faces better than the elf, and will see wrong things earlier).

I'm done with it. Can't see her face anymore, haha.
I know there's something wrong with her left eye, but will fix that later.

I think the problem is that her eyes are differently shaped which gives the impression that one of her eyes is swollen (because it's closed more than the other).

Good progress with your painting in this one. Try to keep your brush a bit bigger; some areas appear textured because you were using a small scribbly brush (mostly the lips and the ear).

    Noë: tnx girl
I decided not to start with oils yet, because of the money and the space and... well I'm just afraid to start whahaha.
But my grandma wants me to do it, so she signed me up for an oilpainting course !

B-Man: thanks! And, did you? (well i should check your sketchbook first before i start asking )

Elophant: Thanks! I'm very busy at the moment, but there will be coming more soon!

    __________________________________________________ _________

Soooooo.... I'm very busy right now, because of my drivinglicence (suddenly I've become a taxidriver for friends and family...) and I have a job! Finally.
It's in a giftshop/interior decorating shop (Xenos) and because of the upcomming holiday's, they scheduled me in for min. 32 hours a week, so that I can learn everything.
When I know how everything works, I'll work 16 hours a week.

I'm very busy with a selfportrait. Planned to do it with oils or acrylics but had not the time for it. Digital is way quicker and I feel like I have so much more to learn with that.

So; my SP is not finished yet, had some struggling with the colours, but here is a preview:

Wow congratulations on the job! Must feel nice to have some money coming in (to buy oils ). Oil paints are not that expensive by the way, but be sure to buy some quick drying medium, or something else tho mix with the paint to help it dry quicker, because otherwise you'll be waiting a week for the first layer of paint to dry (no kidding). Just ask about it in the art store.

I love the self portrait.. It looks like it has a lot of work already put into it.. Is it the full version, or a part of it?

    Well gotta go now.
I'll be doing a small self portrait in the train and I'll paint it if I have time left, but probably not.. so much school stuff to finish before monday!

Noë: thanks so much! Being rejected for so many jobs was not very good voor my confidence, but now I feel very much like this is the only shop closeby where I could be at my place .

Allright... It's not finished... but it took me soo long to finish the face, don't really know what to do with the background right now. And I don't have the patience to finish the hair.
Maybe in a couple of hours... have to watch tv now or something

Loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooove the progress you've been making Marlisa!!!!!!!

These digitals are insane!! It's the lighting that really brings them to life, so good!

Your sp is wonderful, I don't think you need to do to much more to the background, it's looking good atm and really adds some depth!

    Take care,

Allright, I'm lazy. I did a lot of traditional stuff too, but it's too much work to scan them. That's why I only update digital stuff lately.

This one I started to study colours and blending. I'm the one in the front.
I started it like the girl behind me (and yes, she looks crappy).
I guess I'm pretty satisfied with the blending .
The selfportrait colours were from ref. This one I chose two colours, tried to blend the colours, had a bit of a struggle but then finally discovered how to work with it.

Smudging is kinda looked down on. Personally I don't use it because you lose a bit of control over the blending. Here is a tutorial from Linda Bergkvist's site where she talks about different blending techniques, which you might find interesting.
