like your use of light on the digital enviros a lot especially that icy looking effort at the top, got some lovely limpidness about it, and the shock of green in blue in EOW 123.

my only word of advice would be to pay more attention to head anatomy, it seems to be your main failing in character and portrait work, get some books if necessary, I know they helped me.

Those figures in your sketchbook look very nice man. The landscapes I always dig . For those figures you did from imagination, take the time to think about how the masses of the body move in those poses, you need to start drawing in the kind of stuff that's already in the sketchbook figures- No wooden torsos! Proportions need some work as well, but that'll come with practice. Loomisloomisloomis!

young paddy1: Thanks, man. Great advice. I've been slacking off on anatomy studies lately, so I'd better dive back into them.

Sidharth Chaturvedi: Thanks for the push towards better figures. Gotta break out the anatomy books and do some more study. I constantly realize how little I know. Thanks again!

Aaaaand... Happy New Year, everyone! 2010 is gonna be pretty awesome. I'm looking forward to what it has in store. Let's start out with a little figure doodle. One of Jon Schindehette's crits on my portfolio was a lack of really dynamic poses.

More value work. Fairly relaxing when you don't have to worry about color.

School is starting back up, and it's already looking to be a great year. Some good things in store, I'm sure.

First assignment for Digital Drawing is a self portrait. Using a mirror, about 2.5 hours.

Your off to a good start, more structure, anatomy, and compositional exercises will help you out tremendously, and don't be afraid to use reference material.

Not sure why I haven't looked at your sketchbook before, but you have some great stuff here. You have a good sense of shape and I like the line quality of your figure drawings. I would say that the main issue right now is for you to refine your anatomy. The live figure studies are great practice, and learning to build the figure from the ground up with Loomis or Vilppu or such is great for coming up with figures from imagination.

Some super cool stuff in here. Ditto to Liffey, it's odd that I've never checked out your sketchbook before now. I love that last batch of traditional stuff. It's all looking nice. Keep on trucking!

mike butkus: Thanks! Definitely agree with the need for more anatomy/structure. I'm thinking it's my biggest weakness at the moment.

Liffey: Thanks for looking. I'll get on some anatomy studies here soon. I guess I've gotten distracted by studying other things that I've forgotten to strengthen my anatomy with everything else.

Swampdigger: Guess I just have an invisible sketchbook here. Thanks for taking a look.

Surion: Thanks! Gotta love the encouragement.

Where's that batch-uploader when you really need it?

Also keeping a sketchbook of small gouache thumbnails. Fun working out composition and values like this.

    More art!

Here's a couple paintings I did in my figure painting class. Forgive the shoddy photos... we wipe out our paintings at the end of class, so I don't really have time to take good photos of them.

Sick moleskin pages, love them.. really nice line controll with that bolder marker. Also those thumbnail sketches with couache are looking dope, also all that other stuff after and before that, lots of ideas that can be worked on further on those environments. Will check some stuff on previous pages also. All that I can say is keep on going. Btw are there any benefits in working with couache in your option? Just interested, I myself aint really into painting that much.. but I remember that working with couache sucked compared to acrylics (though I haven't discovered neither of those mediums deeply)

xbert: There's just nothing quite like traditional. I mean, I love the speed I can get with digital, but it never feels/smells the same.

spark_zero: Gouache (with a G!) is a tricky beast. The quality of marks is a little different than acrylics, and it's a helluva lot easier to get soft edges/transitions in gouache. I honestly haven't used it that much, though. Thanks for looking!

Hey Noah, I love your sketchbook so far, if you haven't already, think about buying some hard plasticine to sculpt little roughs of whatever figure you're working on as well, it'll really help.

Another speedpaint. I'm hearing again and again that my landscapes/environments are the strong point of my work, so I figure it's a good idea to keep working on them. I love doing 'em, too, so that certainly helps.

Wanted to do something a bit more subtle than my usual crazy-epic lighting.

Crankin' out the art these days. Feels really good.

First up is another quick portrait from class.

A few recent speedpaintings. Figure I'll crank out a bunch of these, and the cream of the crop will get taken to finish. On the first one I kept trying to do the subtle thing. Good practice, at least.

Mac Con: Thanks! Pull out that pencil and start making some art! As far as ideas... I don't know. I look at a lot of art, as well as photography, and observing life. As they say: be a sponge.

Another landscape piece. Actually lucked out and got assigned one for class.
