    Eiki: Thanks!

First image is a study for an oil painting I really want to do. My professor suggested I try to do some traditional landscapes, and I think it was good advice. It's based loosely on a nearby mountain in Virginia. The second is just another speedpaint I struggled through.

Thanks y'all! I love the encouragement.

Been busy with a lot of non-art-related junk lately. On the other hand, I've also been prepping for IlluXCon next week. First convention for me, and also my first professional portfolio review (with Jon Schindehette). I'm pretty pumped to go and meet all of my art heroes. It's gonna be a blast.

So-so little landscape while chatting on the phone:

Thought it might be good to work on my portrait skills, so I did a couple imagined portraits.

Finally participated in one of the EOW challenges. Here's my entry from last week:

I've got a ton of traditional sketchbook work I'm going to try to scan soon and post here. Until next time... back to writing papers.

That's the end of my first sketchbook for class. I'm doing a second for extra credit. I went ahead and picked up one of the A4 moleskines so I'd have a little more room. I really wanted to start to do some painted studies, so using movie still and photos for reference I've been doing some of that. The early b&w ones are gouache, but then I moved to acrylics. It's been a lot of fun to do.

    Hi! Nice SB, Noah!

I really dig your enviros, they're fascinating! I never done one myself, but i think i might after looking at your stuffs. Your productivity is to be exampled, especially by me But i noticed one thing though, I learned that you have a tendency to make necks too vertical straight, as shown in your last two portraits in post #10/p4.

    keep up the good work

Thanks guys! The encouragement always makes it a little easier to carry on. Sorry for the absence lately. Lots of exciting things happening, but it hasn't left much time for my own work. Went to IlluXCon, which was amazing. The week after I participated in a group show where I managed to sell off a piece. And now I'm wrapping up the semester with some final projects.

Took some time off to do a little speedpaint. I've been aching for a while now to show more distance in my paintings, which is what I tried with this one.

EDIT: Forgot to mention, but my art was just featured on ArtOrder! Woo!

    Thanks jedininjaman!

Wrapping up my first semester here at VCU, and looking forward to a nice break. I'm hoping to be able to produce a few portfolio pieces during my break, so I cranked out some thumbnails today. Been a while since I did any of these, so it felt great to get back into it. I actually really like a couple of these, and will probably work them up some more.

This is a current WIP I'm trying to finish. I don't have nearly enough "finished" enviro concepts in my portfolio, so I'm trying to finish some of them, rather than stopping at speedpaint-status. Still lots to do, but it'll get there.

Gonna have another dump of traditional sketchbook stuff once I do some scanning (probably tomorrow), and then lots of fun stuff over break.

Liffey: Thanks! Glad to hear that you see some improvement. It's so easy to trudge through it day by day and miss all of the improvement you're making.

witcrack: Glad I could be a source of inspiration. Thanks for the encouragement!

The landscapes are totally sweet. I love the painted sketchbook pages too. Did you have trouble with the paper warping?

Niice stuff man. I definately llike your traditional stuff more than your digital, especially with those landscape paintings. Things like that should really help out your digital stuff. That last picture looks good, though I'd say the space between the bottom of her nose and her eyes is too big. Keep it up bro.

Your landscapes are one of your strong points; keep making it stronger and stronger. There could be more focal points in your landscapes however. Really like them and their styles.
callouses on the fingers. If you don’t have any, you’re not drawing enough.

sketchibo: Thanks. The paper was warping a little bit, but not enough that it stopped me. These were all done in one of the A4 moleskine sketchbooks. The paper's a little thinner at the larger sizes, but it still did the trick. It also helps to hold back on the water if you're scared of warping, or so I found.

Pyroclasm00: Thanks, man. I always find it interesting that people like my traditional work more. I must confess that most of the time I prefer the tactile nature of paint, but the speed of digital always entices me.

Quasi-almost: Thanks. I love doing landscapes, so maybe that shows.

Anyway, another little elf portrait for today.

Realized I needed to do some more figurative work, so here's a couple quick no-ref studies.
