The pencil renderings from page one are exquisite, and the enviros on page 2 kick ass. Very nice job.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone. The encouragement makes it all that much easier to keep working!

Anyways, thought I'd try something a little different and do some character/creature/thing designs. Trying some new techniques with these.

Just finished up my first week of school, so I've been kept pretty busy with homework. Hopefully still have time to do work on my own time.

Set up a Vimeo account in case anyone feels like watching some sped-up videos of me painting. Maybe in a few years it'll be worth watching.

EDIT: OMG! Just noticed this thread has 5 stars on it. I'm flattered, y'all. I'll try to live up to the rating.

Little painting done in class. It's a pretty intense class since we've only got a couple hours after we receive our assignment to have a finished piece (including doing sketches and all that). I like the idea, at least, even if it's a little rough.

Those speedpaints are awesome. How long time do you spend on them, on average? Very inspiring work, keep it up!

    Thanks you two.

KarenB: They vary. Some are as short as 30 minutes, others as long as probably 1.5 hours.

Amazing work so far. There's something in first speedpaint on post 65 (the tree one) that disturbs me. Maybe is that pale yellow light, it gives an impression of coldness. If that was your intention, you've succeeded really well. If not, maybe turning the pale light into a strong golden yellow could balance the piece a bit, as in last one, where the warm lava colours and the cold grays of the sky/castle keep some balance.

Anyway, really good work! keep it up man

Wow, I'm not sure I've ever seen a bigger leap from page 1 to page 3. Excellent environments and brushstrokes throughout all these.

Abrodos: I was shooting for an after-the-rain look to the image. You're right, though. Warming it up a bit might've been a good idea. Thanks!

TASmith: Probably because it took me so long to get between page 1 and this one. Thanks, though.

Thought I'd try a little different direction with my speedpaints--more illustrative, I suppose. Illuxcon is coming up in just a couple months and I'd like to have a couple more images worked up in my portfolio.

Oh, and I added a couple sped-up videos to a Vimeo account. Check 'em out of you want to see how I go about these speedpaints.

Broke out the oil paints the other day and painted this portrait (after watching Coro's alla prima video). Must... learn... to... PAINT!

Another speedpaint. This one really feels disjointed. Values, edges, colors... all uncontrolled and crazy. Ugh. I'll get it one of these days, I suppose.

post 71 is gorgeous. The portrait is good but I think a lot of that impasto is obscuring the form of his head, rather than enhancing it.

TASmith: Thanks man. You're right--but it was a bit of an experiment for me. I tend to be too stingy with my paint. Good to go the other direction occasionally.

That's a great enviro speedpaint from September 4th - very nice restricted colour.
The September 12th one does feel a bit disjointed - the sky is brown but the water is blue, and I don't really get a sense of scale. The recent canyon speedpaint is nice too, though I think I'd like to see those bright cliffs reflected in the water more, and maybe the figure could break into the bright area to connect the composition and stand out more. The latest speedpaint feels like it's a bit flat and set up like a theatre stage; the background seems separate and painted on, and the log is aligned flat to the front - although the tonal composition is nice.

    Good work, keep it up.

Thanks, Puck. Great crits. Definitely picked out some key points that could make those pieces much better. I'll try to learn from those mistakes.

Did another little speedpaint tonight. Nothing amazing, just playing with some atmospheric effects and colors.

I'm hoping to post some traditional sketches I've done lately. Realized I haven't posted any drawings in a long time. Gotta work on that.
