Hey thanks jamie, we will have to meet up again at the next North american workshop maybe.

here are some spot illustrations done for school.. they were based off of statistics we were given to choose from such as

"Chance that a briton has bought a book solely to look intelligent" 1:3
"Chance that a british youth reports having been bullied via text message" 1:7
"Chance that an American believes his or her phone has been tapped by the federal government" 1:5
"Chances that a U.S. retiree says that he or she was forced to stop working earlier than planned" 2:5

also a doodle before i went to sleep and a depth and value study

i agree with alot of the comments here. you have made some impressive progress over the years dude. you are light years from what you were doing when i first saw you round theez parts. its inspiring to see man. seriously. it humbles the fuck out of me to see young artists get serious about this shit and come into their own liek you have. now, in looking at your overall skillset, if i were to recommend something i think you could concntrate on is your drawing. i know i sound like a broken record here, but knowing how to draw what you wish, and accurately, is the basis for all successful picture making. i think you are jumping in too fast into your paintings, and not taking the time to work out the actual logistics of the drawing first. even if you are sketching for fun, thats no reason not to follow the process to some degree. if you draw stuff out first, you will find that rendering things is pretty easy. if you want to see improvement, what i recommend is drawing with a fine line ink pen. it will force you to concentrate on line, shape and accuracy. try to draw things in as few lines as possible, and pay attention to the shapes and the logic behind it. concentrate on your draftsmanship. long lines. pay attention. take your time. measure. it will give you the patience that you will need down the road when you really start to understand rendering edge hierarchies, and what a fragile and tedious endeavor that can be.

your color is great. and i think you understand how to depict basic form through value. but there is not enough attention paid to the underpinnings of your paintings, and the end result is not as succesful as it could be. draw draw draw. make that shit ritual. do it A ALOT. i know people say that shit all the time, but if you wanna really get this shit..."". drawing is like art math, and its the hard part where you really have to problem solve and think. but if you spend time, the payoff can be really satisfying. like, way better than jacking off or something like that.

so thats what i got. love the colors on the ocotopus. draw more. dont stop.

nice work, i really like the wolfman... suggestions? maybe you could use dry brushing to get some smaller detailed lines in his hair, otherwise good stuff!

Lookin' nice in here, Joel. I'm not sure exactly what you're doing with that monster but I'll be interested to see how he looks in action and perhaps in a setting. That creepy bastard above him looks like a creep from Fallout 3! I'm digging those thumbs most of all. I see a lot of potential in some of those! Keep it coming, man!

Excellent work! have a few questions , do you think you could explain that informal composition to me on the last peice. i've tried it but i am not understanding the line balancing. also what kind of brush pallet do you choose for your digital painting?

Argh! You're kickin' my ass, man! Wonderful update, brother! The thumbnails are really clean and terrific. Very readable. Mine are much more sloppy and difficult to tell what the hell is exactly going on. lol The shell gladiator chick is really nice too. Subtle hints of color and stuff. You've really started to come into your own. You're making me feel awfully guilty, man! I need to study harder! I don't know if I've made quite the jumps you've been making. I guess I really need to invest more time into my craft man. Very proud of you. Keep pushing!!!

JimahJames: In terms of the composition, I really just worked around with it until it felt "right". For informal compositions its always good to make sure your elements are not balanced in 1/2's, so 1/3's is a good rule of thumb. I then subdivided the sketchbook page into 1/4's in order to transfer the drawing over to a larger board. In terms of brushes i normally just use the basic round photoshop brush, some customs of mine and a few of cicinimo's brushes.

    hope that answers ur questions

the Goremet made me smile. I like the creature and character design, but the amazon needs tons of work for me. Values and contrasts are just barely there and the image itself might need some basic rethinking. If its supposed to stand on its own the another element might be needed to add interest.

Nice pics though, really envy your skills with acrylics.

    Cheers

    Hello There

I think you are in the same crossroad as i am right now, your digital rendering is getting really good but the not equally good core drawing skills underneath is what is slowing you down.

This is hardest thing to tackle as coro said it, you jump too easily to render few sketches right away because that way we can make them look good and mask our faults in them. The woman gladiator is stiff and isometric, compare the dynamism and realism in that pose to the latest life drawing, difference? and still that is the level we must look forward to in sketches we do only from our heads.

I think you need to make yourself a training schedule in sketching & drawing (if you do not do it allready), try to put reqular hours in drawing every week, make it ritual as coro said it.
My problems are mirror of your problems and this is what i do now to correct it, put 1-3 hours into sketching 5 days a week (and only sketching)

I wish you best, you have potential that need to be trained into forminable art machine, do the right thing
