Yo, check the last page for updates

    Hey everybody!

Ha, I'm really new around here, so I figured the best way to get going would be to open a sketchbook There's a lot of really incredible art around here, Im hoping someday my work can compare, but till then... paint like crazy, right?

Ive been into computer graphics for a while(Ive been a 3d artist/animator for like 3 1/2 years), but just got into 2d graphics at the beginning of april. I started painting in photoshop with a mouse, and quickly realized that wasn't going to work, so I got myself an intuos, and Ive been painting frequently since then....

Heres some of my better/best work(from earliest to newest). Im open to/would appreciate any critiques or links to information or just advice. No need for a newbie cushion, be as brutal as you like, honesty suits me fine

    Peace, thanks for looking!

Ha, thanks! Atmosphere is still kinda tough for me, these are my best. I have a tendency to stick with a very narrow color palette, which has a pretty negative effect on a lot of the little paints I do that go unfinished. These are the few times that it actually worked out :]

Yeah, its by far my best, sort of one of those accidental pieces that blows your other stuff out of the water and forces you to up the ante...

    Thanks again

Wow, so I started this guy, and have been painting like crazy for the last few hours trying to get it right... Definitely stylized, I sketched him out, and then painted over it(with a bit of alterations to the design, gun etc)

Any and all critiques and thoughts would be much appreciated!

    Peace

I like your 3rd enviros the best, nice mood and colors, interesting forms (at least for me)... the composition could be better (I dunno how, I'm too little, sorry). and I can see the sunshine on the hut in the 1rd one the trees in the background should be separated from it more, I think.
the colored guy with the gun... I like it, but there are some perspectivity (gun) and anatomy issues. I can't say much more, because I'm a beginner and it's a caricaturistic person, or how I put it... so his anatomy is different from ours, but he should be balanced. he's okay to look at, but I'm sure he can be better. I personally would alter at least one of his sides (the current state is too extreme or assymetrical for me) and the position of his nipples, but you can draw much better than me, I just tell my opinion, hoping it helps sometimes.
I have a strong feeling you should hone your perspectivity skills, it would make good to your enviroments too.
keep it up, I'd like to see more

Hey shiNIN, thanks for the comment! Great critiques, gives me plenty to think about, I really appreciate it. Perspective and anatomy are definitely among my weaker skills

    Thanks for the comment!

I like your environment pictures. The second black&white is great. I think it really sets a mood. I like the long distance fading that thickens the image.
    Great job!

    Thumbs up

Wow, only just seen your posts. I was geniunly struck aback by the black, white and red painting. It has immediate potential reminds me of kill bill.

Perspective books would give a great push to your standard of work.

I think with environments making thumbnails on paper is crutial-it helps with the overall composition of the piece and gives you like a helping hand in like everything afterwards because you can then incorporate a building from one ands use the composition of another with the perspective of another.

Keep the work coming+espeically the black white+red ones they are like great already with a bit of work they could be like

Thanks so much dark eagle! Im pretty proud of that first one

Yeah, perspective is very hit and miss for me right now, I definitely need to work at that.

You know, Ive never tried thumbnails before(I only recently found out about em actually), I'll be using that on my next enviro for sure, thanks for the tip!

Ha, I'll try to get a couple more of those done sometime

...and my first ref'd paint ever(I know, riddled with mistakes, especially the perspective, but Im still slightly proud of it ;] )

Any comments and critiques are very welcome, thanks for looking!

Am I missing something about thumbnails? There's not a special technique or anything, is there? Just a very small version of the image? Sounds stupid, haha.

Anyway, nice last paint. Gives a very good mood -- for some reason I'm thinking london...

Thumbnail: Basically you paint a really small version to map out perspective, composition, colors, etc. You do a few of these, and then pick the best(or the best parts of each) for your final painting.

And thanks! Prague actually(I really love the architectural style that place has). Heres another one(ref'd again):

I have a way that you can replicate hairs form with, ribbon. It looks like hair in that its higlights go across the strands rather than down it or along it.

Nice work so far. I just have to say that the proportions on some of your figures seem a tad off. It may just be a stylistic choice, but in either case, looking at some good anatomy books could help. Also, your perspective could use a little bit of work.

Thanks! Good call on both accounts. Perspective is something I really need to get serious about practicing... Ha, anatomy too for that matter. There is a bit of a stylistic feel I'm going for, but I definitely need to start paying real attention to anatomy and proportion.

    Thanks for dropping by

my absolute fav is the b&w one (last in the first post) it has an awesome mood! love the backlighting.

on the Prague painting, the arch on the left, closest to the viewer, is bothering me. i feel that, in perspective, it should be higher.

I am pretty proud of that one, though the small buildings could use a lot of work in retrospect... ah well, you live, you learn.

You got me there, that image is riddled with perspective issues, and that's definitely the biggest. I'll do some more refs soon here, Im hoping they'll give me a steadier hand and better understanding of perspective.
Thanks for the crits, I appreciate it

Anyway, here's a little wip. I started it about an hour ago, but all my attempts at working out the contrast and shading have failed(Im dead tired for some reason), so I'll just get back at this tomorrow.

Fantastic start! Looks a bit weird that your darkest tone is light grey, but the colour choices are excellent, perspective seems pretty right on, and I love the general mood. Looks kind of retro. Looking forward to the darkening of the shadows and the lightening of the highlights

That new WIP you're working on looks very promising. Looks like you've got perspective right. I think for the colors, you might want to show more highlights and dark areas to make it stand out.

Thanks guys Yeah, I have a tendency to start of my stuff with either zero conrrast, or way too much. Im still working on that artists sense where I can get the happy medium as far as those lights and darks

    Updates laterm thanks again!

Update! I'm gonna call this one finished. Its flawed, but I'm pretty happy with it, and I don't feel like I can really push it much farther... urgh, sounds very defeatist, but yeah.

    Maybe tomorrow will be better
