    Jacfats Epic :P Sketchbook

    Hey guys,

Been posting in the critique center for sometime but wanted somewhere to put all my work together and get some more general crits. A bit of background I am 20 years old and did a design computing degree in sydney aus (so any concept art sydney folks feel free to contact or anyone for some work experience for me) and have a bit of a 3d background now in my final year i have discovered my passion for concept art. I will hit this off with a few landscapes from ref and some character art which you may have seen in the critique section. cheers and enjoy. And help me land that job as a concept artist one day . Most recent are at the bottom (next post will be some of my sketchbook/ anatomy/ lifedrawing). I am on holidays atm so encourage me to pump a few out a day dont wanna get lazy.

    Enjoy !

    Hey man.
Good to see you've started an SB.

Your reference painting are obviously your strongest, and are quite good.
    Definitely do more of those.

    Keep posting.

Two sketches I have done over the last week particularly happier with these. Met up with a concept artist today was very motivational and pushes me to keep trying (even in my state heh).

Hey there! I really like your environment studies.....

...and i'm glad seeing you doing anatomy studies. As conceptartist especially in the fields of character and creature design a good basic anatomy knowledge is indispensable. Your characters have some anatomical issues here and there, so i would recommened you before anything else to start with that.

    So keep em coming!

    Cheers

    Andi

Feeling a bit angry at my art atm doesnt seem to be growing/working. Enviros are really hard but i love wat i see from artists. Color is sooo difficult to make work i think that is the worst part of my art. If any one has suggestions of where to find help let me know. These are wat i have painted over the last 2 weeks sickness and work has knocked me around a bit but getting bak at it.

    Hiiiiii!
Great to see u opened a sktechbook!

Try to understand how light interacts with things when ur painting from ref, itll help u paint more convincingly from mind!

Light is all and all we ever paint is what light allow us to see!

    Keep at it Jacfat!

Study from reference trying to get that tonal range correct and read well also trying to work out where to place detail I love doing these .

Study from Théodore Géricault quite an amazing expression.

That copy after Géricaut is good, i recognised the original painting right away!!
A few days ago i borrowed a book about him and planned to make a copy of that very same portrait.

    Why paint it in greyscale?
U might wanna try it with colors next time.

Pay attention to proportions too, the rest of his body including shoulders is way to small, it makes it look odd almost like a caricature.

Dont forget that drawing, most of the time, is alot of measuring and comparison!

As for enviros i advice paying more attention to:
-the planes of ur subject, i mean what is horizontal, vertical, etc
-and perspective of course: boring but vital!!!

Replies will come with time, dont focus on them.
At worst make the lack of replies be another source of motivation to give urself a boost and work even harder!

    Best of luck Jack!

Some thumbnails for a game environment I am developing for uni its based on art-deco/steampunk. Trying to get a nice dark mood going. You will see a few more pages of these ones and a few characters as I/the team develops the idea.

Your environments are definitely your strongest work. The anatomy on your characters is off, but you seem to have a good sense of color and composition. I really like the painting of the metal/steampunk fountain. I'd like to see that one pushed further to completion. Good work so far. Keep posting.

Nice style! Wow, particually like the difference in the solid and murky forms in this and this.

Really original looking book. More please!

    Hi!
    I owe you a bump dont i?
I advise you work more from reference, like in those earlier posts.
I think your eye is not trained enough yet (neither is mine for that matter...)
When you do those studies try to always go from:
-the bigger shapes to the smaller ones.
-what is obvious to what is more subtle.
-the most "interesting" details to the ones of second importance.
I think this is an easier way to end up with a good representation of your subject.
The 3D render of the eow100 piece in the crit center is nice.

S.M : Thanks buddy for stopping by . I agree with working with ref the following enviro was a combination of creativity and reference to get it down and I feel it came together much more . Great advice to with the details I think i need to also control where I work in my detail so the eye is controlled much more.

Below I have got a sargent study and an enviro painting. enjoy

Hey man, I like environments too!! I like yours. I suggest getting some watercolours, with a small watercolour sketchbook or something, and going out to do landscape painting from life.

    Keep going!
