    MGLDyson's Sketchbook

I figured I'd give getting involved here a shot since I've been lurking for such a long time. So here's some stuff from my sketchbook and whatnot. Hopefully my work will give you some creative gumption as your work here does for me.

    [Thread image]

Here's one from a school project. Not really a sketch, but not something I would post as a finished piece simply because it isn't truly "finished".

Some ladies I worked on over a short period at work. These were an attempt to break the crust that encases one's sensibilities after a long period of inactivity.

    Random stuff...

Naturally, all these things are on my blog. I hope to keep updating. And, that will happen as long as I don't get too lazy. Thanks for checking out my stuff.

    Thanks guys...

Koof: Thanks for the link, I will be checking it out. I didn't actually use black in either of the two colored pieces for shading. It was mainly adjusting the Saturation and Hue sliders to get to a different tone I wanted. They do look like they have some black in them, though. I think that's because I colored them in the Adobe 1998 color space in Photoshop and then the pics get changed to sRGB when translated to the web. I am not incredibly strong with color theory, though, so more education is always welcome. Thanks.

FreeLiner: What do you mean by "color modulation"? I would assume it would be like adding a swath of warm or cool tones into areas of color...

JessArt: Thanks, Jess. I will keep posting as long as I don't start getting too sedentary.

    Bagg: Thanks for the stars...

tim: Thanks, as well. I really like "out there"...

Thor: I will post some process shots as soon as I get done with the piece I am working on. I've actually got a pretty good bit from concept to finish.

JailHouse: Ha, the Cowboy was one I did at work while standing around. I hope to get back to that idea sometime.

Here's a couple more headz to gander at...

    Some new things...

Thanks for the comments malpanka and photosynthesis

The first two are a couple of older things from the sketchbook...

The last is fresh from a session down at B&N, sadly, the only place that fosters creativity where I'm from... enjoy!

So here we have another one...

Man, it feels good to be drawing regularly...

If you guys don't know about it already, check out Creaturebox.com. They just put out their DVD they were selling at Comic-con. It comes with a booklet full of their stuff, really a sweet treat.

Anyway, I think I'll try some color on this one.

    So it's been a while...

The first I think was inspired by James Jean sensibilities and Clemence Poesy form "In Bruges", a friggin' awesome movie (watch it now!).

Second, some headz. The first comes from some ad on the net for some IT service, can't remember. The second is from a photo by Dorothea Lange. The third is some mechanic dude.

Lastly, a crusader (apparently doing battle with one leg, right?).

    Two things...

    1) Whilst sitting at Barnes and Noble, I looked up and saw LeBron James staring back at me from the cover of the most recent GQ... so I thought I would draw from that likeness.

    2) Just something without human facial features.

Found an old piece of lineart from school...

This is something I did for a piece of art at SCAD. It's pretty hard to read but it's supposed to be a freaky rooster... the head is on the left nestled in a Battle Chasers Calibretto-esque neckbone formation. Admittedly it's not something I am terribly proud of, yet, I am willing to display it here because I like the line quality of some bits of it. The project was a redesign of a wine label and I chose Rex Goliath for my wine. The outcome (meaning, once I added color and text) was a disaster but it served it's purpose for class.

Also, I know the tail feathers are a complete rip-off of the Massive Black rooster's. But they're so cool that I wanted to try to mimic the feathers for my own piece.

    Female bust progress...

So I did a drawing in my sketchbook that I want to take to a finish of some sort...

What I have posted here is the progress I've got from drawing - scan - cleaning lineart - value study.

I will upload more as I progress, including the original drawing without cleaning.

    Fixing some problems...

So I noticed that this chick's face looked a little weird... her right cheekbone sticks out a mile, too far. In order to restore some sense of reality to my cartoon I brought that bad-boy in some. I normally hate erasing line-work but I made myself do it and kept telling myself, "If you drew it once you can draw it again."

The first shot shot shows the line that was fixed.

The second shows the original work vs. the fixed work.

The bottom two shots are the original whole vs. the fixed whole.

Good stuff here. Would really love to see what you could do with that solid line of yours at a life drawing class. Will have to keep an eye on this thread cause it will definately be a five star thread in the future. Four stars from me at the moment.

edit... And the future is apparently now.

    B&N session

Placeboast: I wish I had done more lifedrawing @ SCAD. It was the best class I took there. I had a great teacher and I didn't even take full advantage of the opportunities presented for lifedrawing. Thanks for the comments...

    OmertA: Thanks!

Here are some more things I've done in my spare time. I have a few projects on my plate, right now, including some logo work which I hope I can share once it is done. Also, I have an ad that I hope to share soon.

The second image is an Illustrator job I did for a client. The final produced image ended up being about 15'X12' for the front of a store. I am fairly pleased with the way it turned out but some of the distortions due to perspective problems bug me.
