My very first (finished) + my second sculpey creature

Here are some photos of the "work in progress".

And here is the sketch that the sculpture is based upon (the creature is entirely a product of my imagination ^^)

My scanner is acting up, so the sketch didn't turn out that well when it was scanned, but you can see the general idea.

So, now I'd be very happy to get some crits, since this is my very first I see it more as an "experiment".

the experiment was a success, fruitdot. your beginning shows a lot of potential. keep it up! one question though, how does your creature move since its two legs are one infront of the other?

Off to an interesting start.
You need to get your camera to focus on the horse-creature - not the sofa ;-)

Thanks, I'm very glad you like it!

It doesn't move. It's a tree-creature, the legs are tree-trunks. I guess it roots to the ground and awaits its prey. That's what the flower on the head is for- to attract the unknowing victims. :p

No, honnestly I haven't really thought of it. xD I just thought it looked cool. :p

Yay, finally! ^^

Haha, yeah I noticed that. :p they were only quick snapshots tho, will try to get some better ones as the creature progresses. ^^

i have the same problem...try using windows picture edit to crop photo...juct a suggestion. nad i like the backstory on this guy...nice touch!

Just to warn you: I ended up buying a new camera - it can be a pretty expensive hobby this one ;-)

Here's a photo of the flower on its head. I tried cropping the photo, but I apparently don't have PS on this computer so I had to use MS Paint. :/ And it didn't turn out that well...

So I took another photo from a farther distance, and then zoomed in instead. The details are more visible on this photo.

Okay, here are a couple more photos, with better focus than the previous, of my creature and its progression.

Wow, this whole sculpting business is just way too much fun! ^^

Anyway, thought I might share the background to this creature. I first created it in 2003 and called it "Växtdemon" or translated "Plant demon". Then I found my original sketch a few weeks ago and redrew it; added some things and took away other things and made the creature more detailed.

In 2003 I had also written some "facts" about the creature. They were:

"Lives in tropical rainforests. Is often misstaken for a tropical plant. The flower on its head attracts insects which the demon devours."

Length: approx. 1,2 metres
Weight: 15-20 kilograms
Diet: Different kinds of insects

Just thought it could be fun to share.

Also, in 2003 I drew a total of 12 "demons". It'll be interesting to see if I decide to sculpt them all.

I had the same experience as you: this is so fun! And I keep deciding that I need to do one of those - and one of that - all the time. The list just gets longer....
Looking good so far - by all means - do all twelve of them.

Yes, this is so addictive! :p I just hope I'm not working too fast? Well, this is still a learning experiment, and I'm learning on the way!

For those who are interested, my creature is near completion.

All that is missing now is the rest of the paint, and the vines that'll be sticking out of its back. Feedback is really appreciated!

You might consider blending the two colours on the tail and lower stomac (well not the same blend of course) by applying thin layers of both paints in the border-area. (You will eventually have to learn to do that anyway ;-)
I believe you are pretty much "on-sketch" which is good for a first-sculpt.

I've been following many projects on this site for a long time. It took a while before I actually got the courage to try something of my own.

I guess I'm working so fast because I'm too excited, haha, I want to see my creature finally "come to life". ^^

i;m not experienced at all. at least not with sculpting.i've only been doing this for a little while, and right now i'm only working on my second sculpt ever. i mean aside from grade school rubbish. i've been into art for as long as i can remember though, went to an arts high school...art is everything to me! my real name is Siddiq.

and your excitement is fantastic, it is always great to channel your energy into something you're passionate about, right?

I'm still a novice when it comes to most forms of art, except music and the written word.

Those are two arts that I do master. ^^

i have a friend who just visited your country...she thinks i'd love it there! i hope to visit Sweden one day...maybe soon.

keep at it. your sculpting that is...oh i noticed one thing on your design that you left out of the sculpt...the bark lines on the legs. are you going to paint them on?

Hmm, I haven't decided if I should include the bark lines on the legs or not yet... I have done some carvings on the legs that aren't that visible in the photos tho, but we'll see.

How fun that she liked Sweden, it is a very nice country with many things to see.

Lots of nature, maybe that's why I was inspired to make such a nature-related creature too, who knows? :p

Yet another update. Now it's very, very near completion. Only a few details and some paint on the head left.

Clumsy me accidentally "hit" the tongue with my hand while concentrating on painting the face, so the tongue became loose. I've corrected this by "glueing" it with a very, very small amount of clay. So, my creature is yet again going back in the oven. xP
