Help 626 draw better - update 4/17

Hey there! Please help a poor student out and give critique. Or just a kick in the ass.

Practice makes perfect, and that's what I'm trying to do. My hope is that this SB will help motivate me to draw every day. Particularly the stuff I tend to not practice at all. So yet again I climb on the bandwagon and hold on for dear life!

I will try to update daily, but due to limited computer/scanner access it'll probably be more like every-other day. Thank you all for taking the time to have a look!

Starting off with some of this mornings sketches. I went through a stack of paper about a half inch high, just doing a lot of quick sketches. I didn't have time to scan all of them, so here's a couple. took one or two minutes each.

Been a few days since I could get to the computer..... I havn't been drawing as much as I should, but put in at least a couple hours every day. Here's yesterday's stuff: some studies of people and birds and a sketch for a bigger painting.

Been gone for a while....

Some doodles and studies from my life drawing class... most of the stuff from class is too big to take home every day (on a bicycle) so I'm leaving it there till the end of the semester.

The skull is homework from my life drawing class. I need to draw more skulls, and bones in general, but they're hard to get a hold of.... maybe study from photographs? I've been drawing wild animals from photos since there's a distinct lack of wildlife where I live (we don't even have a zoo!). Also, I recently found the Concept art 101 thread. It's incredibly useful! I'm going to be doing all the lessons from it, spending a week at a time on each topic. Lesson 1, drawing something with imagined parts tacked on, is below.

Quick painting.... it's Icarus from the greek myth. I really need to work on painting technique, but focusing on more basic stuff is better right now.

Whew, managed to fix the scanner. It turned out I uninstalled the driver for it. I can't even imagine why or how....

So these are some more studies, and the bottom ones are sketches of my character Nightfox. I'm trying to work out a good design for her that makes it obvious she is sneaky and quick. I'm finding it very difficult to communicate personality visually.

I had this idea for a painting... the second one was to try and get a better feel for the lighting. It's nighttime, and the streetlamp is the only light source.

Been a few days... here are some Christmas presents I've been working on for people. More to come later today.

That colorful one isn't entirely my artwork... a friend of mine (she goes by TeiHune) drew and shaded the critter, I colored it and drew the accessories/clothes. It's a fun project she has, they're adoptable online pets.

Yikes, and I only have a week until finals. Study time!

What is this? Good question... sometimes I don't really think as I paint. Perhaps that's not such a good thing.

Anyways, there's plenty of problems here. I am so lazy! Never drawing landscapes or environments, always people! Well, my new years resolution is to do serious studies/practice every day. In the mean time here's another lazy figure drawing.

You've got some pretty good stuff. You can however do with sharpening your understanding of anatomy a little, the eyes on that antler guy for instance don't seem to fit into his head.

In keeping with my resolution, I'm trying to do a forest scene. It's more difficult than I thought! Even using multiple references, I'm not really sure where to start...

Hmm. Not much changed since last time. I blended the colors and added some reflected light.

Martial arts studies, from photos. My Ultimate goal is to draw a good-lookin' fight scene. This is just step 1

I had the urge to take a break from serious stuff and do a quick, cutesy doodley thing.

Interesting stuff man.
One thing just to point out is that most of the paints are lacking values, its improving but I recommend to do a colour study just to tighten up those skills.

Hi there, thanks for thanking my post.

One bit of advice is to work on values in your pencil drawings: even just use extremes of black and white as opposed to a timid short range of greys. Also try to think of your characters and things as 3D, as most great cartoon styles are made with structure in mind. Good luck!
